I have the MS Office 2004 for Mac and I am having a big problem at the
moment with Entourage. Specifically, everytime I open Entourage, after
a while it crashes and I have to force quit and open it again. It is
happening all the time now. I tried to rebuild the database but the
problem persists. Also, I uninstalled the whole Office and installed
everything again and I am still continuing having the same problem.
Curious enough, if I disconnect the internet, Entourage does not
crash.

Hmmm, this is curious. It has to be a schedule that is trying to download
mail. Make sure the Progress window is open so you can see what is being
downloaded. If it's a corrupt message you will need to delete it via your
web account or through online access.
I tried to check it but it is not the case of emails since I deleted
all the emails I had the accounts. I noticed something more. When I
open Entourage, it crashes and it stays like that for a long time. If
I let it wait, after some time (a long time, dont know how long) it
finally works. After that, until I quit Entourage, no problems. But
the moment I quit and open Eutorage again, I have the same problem
again.

How did you delete the emails?
To test for problem in your User's account, test Entourage in a new User.
1. In System Preferences create a new User
2. Switch to new User
3. Open Entourage (you'll need to enter your account info)
4. Test Entourage for the problem
If the problem goes away then it's in your User's folder. We'll discuss what
to do if this is the case.
You previous said you uninstalled Office. Did you use "Remove Office"?
Did some more tests and I found out that the problem is with the
Launchbar application. If I have the launchbar application off,
Entourage does not crash. The issue is that Launchbar is indexing
Entourage information. So if I choose not to index Entourage addresses
it works fine.
What I dont understand is that before I was already using Launchbar
and it was indexing just fine. Now it doesn't. I tried to uninstall
Launchbar and install it again and the problem remains the same.

I think I would bring this to the attention of the author of LaunchBar
to see what they have to say about it.

Glad the testing resulted in finding the culprit. I use LaunchBar and have
no problems. I'll be interested in finding out what is causing the problem.
I also have a problem with Entourage 2004 crashing when I try to select the preferences menu from the pull down menu. I tried the program using a different user on the same computer and it did not crash.

This indicates a corrupt preference in your User's folder, or you need to
rebuild your database. Some preference files are actually in your database.

Hold Shift key down when opening Entourage. It will disable any schedules
that might be causing the problem. Next, under View in the Menu bar select
Preview Pane --> Below. Now you should be able to select the message and
delete it.
I also have frequent crashes with Entourage.
Mine seem to occur mostly when I open my Sent Folder and when it downloads message from the hotmail server, it hangs for a while and then I have to force quit.
Any ideas?
Try booting in safe mode and see if it crashes then.

I am using Entourage 2004 on a brand new MacBook Pro running Leopard.
When I am writing an email (in HTML) and click on the colour button (to choose to highlight selected text in a different colour) it automatically "crashes" and informs me that it had to unexpectedly had to quit. It offers me at least the chance to relaunch and saves the email in Drafts (so kind of them) but what gives??
I'm relatively new to Mac, figures the problems I'm encountering are still Microsoft related!

Rebuilding my data base worked fine with my Mac (system 10.3.9) and microsoft Office 2004.
I had to do it twice in 2 days.
After restarting the computer, hold the alt key and go fint Entourage in the applications->Office 2004. Sitll holding the key, click twice on Entourage and then you get the tool for checking the data base and reparing it if necessary.
As far as I am concerned, I am planning to do this once a week!

It's probably a corrupt message. Log into your account with your web browser
and look at your older messages. It's most likely a spam message. If you use
tcpflow it might identify the exact message.
Here are the short and simple instructions on using tcpflow:
If you activate the Script Menu in the Finder you can easily access the
script there. To activate the Script menu, go to your Applications folder in
the Finder. Select the AppleScript folder and open AppleScript Utility.
Show Script Menu in menu bar
Select the script to automatically start the Terminal with the correct
command. Enter your password and tcpflow will be activated. Next use
Entourage to send a test message.
Using the script makes it easy to use tcpflow for subsequent testing.

That's Option key on a Mac.

Definitely NOT a good idea.
It is not recommended that you rebuild your database as regular maintenance.
Rebuilding should not be considered as a substitute for an adequate backup.
You are encouraged to back up critical data on a regular basis.
Rebuilding should be avoided unless there is database corruption. Here's
what Jud Spencer [one of Entourageıs developers] said on the issue:
There is a small benefit to compacting regularly. Entourage maintains
internal sort tables. Those sort tables are optimized on a compact.
However, you should only choose the rebuild option if your database is
damaged. Many people believe that rebuilding your database will protect you
from future corruption. That just isnıt the case.
When I try to launch Entourage I get a window that says "entourage unexpectedly quit. I never get a change to even open the program. I have tried rebuilding the db and I have checked the hard drive for errors.

Which link? The Mactopia interface is mangling URLs right now and inserting
a space in them. Is it a long URL? You should be able to copy it and remove
the space to access.
I have the same problem as Jason. All was working fine until an email I sent, which was received at the other end btw, became seemingly lodged in the Outbox.
I highlighted it and deleted. Entourage crashed with the "unexpectedly quit" message.
Now i get that message every time I try and open entourage.
I've had many problems with entourage in the past. I'm about to give up, unless somebody can help. Using the new iMac.
As said, technology and I have never been best friends. I expect things to work, and I haven't a clue what to do when they don't. Being a Brit hack based in China, with poor language skills, exacerbates my techie problems. Glad to have found this forum. Will bookmark to pester far smarter people than I in the future.
I was going to post a message here about hangs and beach balls in Entourage since the last updates, but reading Diana Ross' posts helped me get past the problems, so thanks in advance for the tips.
That said, why did some email messages not cause a problem before the latest set of updates, and now they DO cause a problem after the updates?
Also, I received several "database corruption" errors from Entourage itself, but when I run the database utility, it says nothing is wrong. This has disappeared with the very latest update so far, but that was very disconcerting at best.
I'm having problems problems with Entourage as well. I had to restore my hard drive from Time Machine because of a hard drive failure. Ever since, Entourage unexpectedly quits when I'm connected the the exchange server while I am in the office. I rebuilt the database but it still crashes. The weird thing is that it didn't crash when I was connected to the exchange server thru the VPN, only when I connect directly to the exchange server in the office (ethernet or wireless). I went to the Entourage website and deleted potentially corrupt files as suggested but it still crashes.

You might try using "Remove Office" and reinstall Office 2004. You MUST
apply all updates, or your Entourage Identity will fail to open.
I suspect the problem was in the Time Machine restore process. I suggest
using Time Machine for what I call OOOPS! Individual files. For OMG
problems, use backup software like SuperDuper.
Besides being excellent backup software ---smart backups are great and
quick---one of the options in SuperDuper! is to create what the author calls
a "Sandbox". It's used to revert to pre-update state of your OS. Here's a
description of how this option works:
A Sandbox is a bootable copy of your system, stored on another hard drive or
partition, that shares your personal documents and data with the original.
With SuperDuper!, you actually use the Sandbox as your startup volume. You
can safely install any system updates, drivers or programs in the Sandbox,
without worrying about what might happen to your system. If anything goes
wrong, you can simply start up from the original system. SuperDuper! has
preserved it in its original, pre-disaster state but all your new and
changed personal documents are totally up to date. Within minutes, you're up
and running again without having to go through a difficult and
time-consuming restore process.
I've de-installed and re-installed Office and applied all updates. Entourage still crashes but I figured out a way to avoid the crashes. If I do not connect to the exchange server when I initially open Entourage and connect to it after the initial synch, it does not crash.
My current problem now is that Entourage does not connect and sync when I connect through VPN. The VPN says connected but Entourage does not connect to sync. I checked my settings and I have 2 accounts- one for home which is a pop account and one for work. The VPN address is the same one as the POP. Have I been connecting through the POP all along? I thought POP does not sync Entourage calendars and is only for mail?? Why did it connect to VPN before and not now??

I Cc one of the Exchange folks on this. It's always best to put 'Exchange'
in the subject so it gets noticed by the right people.
One thing I would like you to try. When you open Entourage, hold the Shift
key down to see if the crashing goes away. If yes, then it's a schedule that
causing the crash. Disable/edit that schedule.

Hi Julia!
I've read your past messages and I suggest that you completely remove
your Exchange account from Entourage (you won't lose any messages
because they're still on the server) and then create your account again.
This will require that all your messages get resynchronized from the
server, so it may take a while.
If you're unable to connect while using VPN then I suspect you're using
your front-end Exchange Server's Outlook Web Access (OWA) address and
not the back-end address of the Exchange Server where your account
resides. While at work, always use a backend server address. (You may
need to get that address from your Help Desk or if they're unhelpful be
sure to post back. I can give you instructions for finding your server
addresses from Windows.)
I'm having trouble connecting from home, not work. It looks like I previously used the VPN to log onto a POP account for Entourage. The POP account has a different host address than the one at work. For some reason when I open entourage at home it looks for the exchange address and not the POP account like it used to. The POP account is selected as the default address. The VPN says its connected using the POP account host but the entourage is not searching to sync with the POP address but the exchange address.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if itıs your Userıs folder that contains the problem.
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Office there.
If the problem went away, then test your User account:

Error -5000
Messages with an attachment creates Error -5000
Attachments are stored in the Entourage Temp folder inside the Microsoft
User Data folder. This is where Entourage is trying to save the file before
it opens. Check the permissions on this folder.
Owner Access: Read Write
Group Access: Read only
Others: Read only
You can delete the Entourage Temp folder, and Entourage will create a new
one when launched.
If this doesn't work....
In the Finder, go to your Microsoft User Data folder in Documents. Move the
Main Identity to the desktop and rename it Old Main Identity. Now, launch
Entourage and it will create a new Main Identity that should work.
Make sure you have updated Entourage or you will get the error
"This Identity Cannot Be Opened With This Version of Entourage"
This message usually means, for example, that Entourage is at 11.0, but the
saved database was saved in Entourage 11.3.3. Since there was a database
format change in there, Entourage 11.0 cannot open a database saved in
Entourage 11.3.3.
Updaters needed for Entourage 2004. I would skip 11.4. Many users are having
problems with this one and it mainly a security updater.

Thanks for letting me know your problem is solved, but it helps me know what
to suggest when I know exactly what solved your problem. Thanks!!
Diane: Each time I opened Entourage it tried to send an email that was hung up in my outbox. When tried sending it originally, Entourage had locked up. I quit Entourage and tried a couple of times again, even rebooted, but it would immediately freeze because I had it set for automatic send/receive.
Despite having the word 'corrupt' show up when I tried to open an information page for Entourage, I suspected it was the email, not the program, that was corrupted. But didn't know how to disable the auto-retrieve.
You had replied above to another poster to hold down the shift key while Entourage loaded. I did, which bypassed the automatic download function. That allowed me to delete the email, and that fixed the problem.
I learned a second lesson that I thank you for. The original email had come in from an e-store I have done business with for several years, so I had no qualms about allowing the images with the info I needed to appear. (I have 'download pictures' set for manual download.) So. From now on, when I reply to one of these, I will copy and paste the subject line plus salient info into a new e-mail that I initiate.
Thank you again, I can't believe my good fortune at having you and this forum during my search for info.
I'm not sure this will be of any value to anyone, and you've probably covered it already, but just in case ...
During the hours between the freeze and finding you, I ran a general search for the name of one contact. Very often when I get an email in from a client, I copy and paste the entire thing (to/from/when included) into a word document. I knew I could at least locate some addresses that way, even though the rest - addresses, phones, personal info, etc. - would not appear. However ...
One return was an Entourage page with the word 'Contact' on the icon.
I dragged and dropped a copy of the icon to the desktop, but clicking on it tried to open Entourage. So I tried adding the extension .txt, clicked and a text page opened. The info from my address book was nestled in a lot of junk/artifact, but it was indeed there - email addresses, phones, snail mail addresses, everything I had entered. I did the same for all of them.
I located the folder it was in, and that contained a page for every listing in my address book. (There was also a folder with a copy of almost every email I had ever sent. Whoa! I dragged and dropped a copy of that, too.)
I retrieved and pasted each bit of info into a word doc, but I don't see it as wasted time - I now have a hard copy of my contacts (which I should have been keeping anyway) and a reminder to update it regularly.

You can export under File in the Menu bar your contacts as a text file or as
a tab delimited file that will open in Excel.
I use an Automator action and iCal to do this for me automatically once a
week.
Follow the steps in this tutorial but do it for contacts instead of your
Identity.
I wonder if you can help me as well. I also had Entourage crashing after i bought the new OFFICE for Mac to run on my new MacBook. It crashed repeatedly. I took it to the Genius Bar and they reloaded the OS (not Leopard) and it seems to work ok. The problem is that i get a rules error message whenever mail comes in, because i had to delete a folder it's looking for. I had to delete it because when trying to set up a basic rule (actually easy to do in Outlook!) for incoming mail to go into a specific folder, i had all incoming mail going into that folder! I tried changing the rule, but that didn't work,so ultimately i had to delete the folder. Thus the error msg on all incoming mail, looking for that folder. How do i stop this?

Often different version have different solutions. This includes the OS.

What type of account? ( POP, IMAP, Exchange )

accounts. Let me know if you need further help. Remember Categories are your

Try holding Shift key down when opening Entourage. This allows Entourage to
launch without crashing in situations like this. You could then turn off
Preview Pane and check the server looking for the suspect message.

I would test Entourage in a new User. You can move your Microsoft User Data
folder to the Shared folder. After you create the new User in System
Preferences drag from Shared to Documents. Now open Entourage. What happens?
How did you install Leopard?
There are 3 types of installs:
1. Upgrade Mac OS X (the default upgrade method)*

Thanks for all the useful advice above, I have worked my way through it and sorted out my current (totally locked out of Entourage) problem, plus some of my longstanding (rogue e-mails that caused crashes) problems.
My concern is that I'm running Office v.X (I think I bought it around 2002) on OS Tiger 10.4, so not Office 2004 on Leopard, that all the thread has been about. My questions:
1. Are there any specific tips regarding Entourage v.X?
2. I have over 2.1 Gb in my Entourage database, and have been wondering if that might be causing problems. Can someone let me know if I shouldn't be concerned about that, or if I should, a straightforward way of dealing with it, please?
3. Are there any updates available for Office v.X anywhere? Or should I be upgrading to Office 2004? Or maybe v.X was more stable than 2004 appears to be?

Exactly why you never hijack a thread. You found similarities in the
original question, but when you want to ask about your problem you need to
start your own thread. I'm not sure what your problem is.

First tip I have is to upgrade. It is End of Life software. Many
improvements in database since Office X.

Entourage X has a 4 GB limit on the Database file (there is no Messages
file), and you will be warned as you near the limit. As you finally get
close enough, it will force you to compact your database. You'd have to work
really hard to lose data with Entourage X.

It's Office 2008 that people are talking about having problems. I still
suggest you upgrade to Office 2008 and get the Home & Student version. It
does not contain Exchange but I doubt you need that. It's about $130 at
Amazon. An upgrade to your Office X is $205. That would require you have the
old version installed or have the CD to prove ownership every time you had
to re-install.
Entourage has continued to be unstable over the last couple of days, and I cannot now get it to open, either by using Shift and Open, or by using Alt and Open (it won't even perform the rebuild).
Yes, an upgrade to Office 2008 is now on the cards, but in the meantime I'm out of the e-mail loop!

If Entourage X will not open, Entourage 2008 will not be able to import any
of your data.
Office performance is related to your system files. Installing on a good
base is required. Spend this time until you new CD arrives making sure your
HD is in good health. Install combo updaters to cleanup/repair your OS
install. Archive off old data and create as much space as possible on your
HD. If you have an external drive, I would clone your current set up, wipe
your current drive then either install everything fresh or use your clone to
rewrite your data.
I use SuperDuper and it's highly recommended by many Mac users.
We've discussed using SuperDuper!(backup software) before, but this is an
excellent time to remind users about a feature it has that protects you from
system updates that so bad.
One of the options in SuperDuper! is to create what the author calls a
"Sandbox".

Same problem since running Office 2004 on new iMac with Jaguar. Crashes with error -192 when I open then delete emails. I have to force quit. Microsoft seem to want to charge 346 to get help. Apple not interested. any ideas appreciated!

I have a similar problem. Entourage (Office 2004) crashes with error -192 now I run it on Jaguar (new imac) but was fine before.
I can't find cd but don't really want to spend alot on new version. Microsoft seem to want to charge £46 for support...no chance. I'd rather dump Office if this is their attitude to Mac users.

The script could not run. End of file was reached.
or
The script could not be run. An error has occurred(-192)
This was fixed in the update Office 10.1.2
The -192 error is a problem with a file's resource fork, and so could apply
in more than one scenario. Where scripts are involved this is usually
because they're trying to run one of Jaguar's data fork scripts in a pre-SR1
Entourage.
Since the original error popped up and was fixed, the error has continued.
Users have found these things to cause or resolve the error.
This error could be involved with fast user switching and running Entourage
in more than one user.
This error is also associated with printing errors.
-192 error could be coming from the OS. I would suggest checking the hard
disk for errors. Run Disk First Aid, Disk Warrior or Norton and see if that
solves the problem.
Updating my Office suite did the trick. I suggest using "Remove Office" then
reinstall from the CD and update before opening Entourage. Also run Apple's
latest Combo updater. It will overwrite files that might have been damaged.
Several users have reported this fixed some odd problems they were having
with Entourage.
It appears that the root of this conflict may be a font problem. I turned on
Suitcase 10 today and it prevented the opening of duplicate fonts, but
duplicate fonts were requested by html mail. So, as Entourage tried to read
these html emails, my program started getting regular 192 errors, blank
screens, freezes and crashes. See Dealing with bad fonts.
Suggestion: Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is
system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

I'm using a PC Mac, with OS 10.4, and 2004 Entourage.
Today for the first time, Entourage quit suddenly. I got the screen message about Entourage unexpectedly quitting and did I want to report it, etc.
I was working in MS Word at the time. I had not received any odd emails. I have tried re-starting, and have done the database check and repair apparently all is OK. I have been on my ISP site to check there are no rogue emails waiting there for me.
If I launch Entourage with the shift key down so that it doesn't automatically connect and try to retrieve emails, it's fine. I can send emails. I cannot retrieve anything at all. As soon as it tries to retrieve (after logging on to a POP3 account), it quits.
Can anyone offer me some help please I'm not very technical.

Lots of things can cause unexpected quits. See this link for options:

Could be database corruption. Let's test in a new Identity first to be sure.
CREATE A NEW IDENTITY:
On the Entourage menu, click Switch Identity, If a confirmation message
appears, click Switch.
Click New, and then in the Identity name box, type a name for the new
identity After you create an identity, the Entourage Setup Assistant appears
and helps you set up your account.
Enter your account info. Under the Options tab in the Account window, select
to leave mail on server. (this saves your mail for download into your
regular account. Usual testing procedure.)
Does it work? If yes, then it is your database. If no, then we need to
troubleshoot send & receive.
Send & Recieve Basics:
1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration
You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.
Let me know what your find.
-----------------
How to rebuild:
Quit any applications that are running, including virus-protection
applications, all Office applications, Microsoft Messenger for Mac, and
Office Notifications/Reminders, because they might interfere with
rebuilding.
Creating the new identify has worked!!! Thank you for your advice and help. I have a couple of other questions.
I didn't import anything from the old identity, so have lost my address book. Can I retrieve it, or will I need to put it in from scratch?
Should I do anything about the emails in the "old" identity?
Thanks.

Entourage is also crashing for me. I have narrowed it down to copying a message from one IMAP mailbox to another. It appears to happen when it is copied manually or with a rule.

A good way to test, is create a new User in System Preferences. Open
Entourage and enter the IMAP account info. Test. If it works, then this
tells us it's something in your Users folder. Let me know how this works.

Launchd is a system process. This indicates system problems.

How did you install Leopard?
There are 3 types of installs:
1. Upgrade Mac OS X (the default upgrade method)*
2. Archive and Install
3. Erase and Install
* Just because it's the default doesn't mean it's the best option.
Regardless of the method you used, I would apply the latest Apple combo for
let and restart then Repair Permissions. This should fix the underlying
system problems. Note: some users have had to to an "Archive & Install" to
get their Leopard system working correctly.
I receive an update from microsoft office that I installed yesterday.
Today swiching on my macbook I found out that entourage is complitely empty from all my messages, contacts identity and accounts. As bright new.
Where are all my datas??
can I get them back.
I saw that that I could import all my data from an older version but I don't know where can I find these datas.
Thanks for your help
I found out why all this.
I moved the MICROSOFT USER DATA folder to an another folder because I was reordering my Document folder.
Thanks for your help anyway
I'm getting an "unknown error 16008" message while in the calendar section. It will not let me cancel even though that is the only option it shows.
Last week I lost all my user data (it was actually moved to another directory) but was able to follow the directions I found on the site to fix the problem. But the lost data happened when I had the same error.
This is the only program I constantly use and seem to have more problems cropping up.
I had a new (larger) hard drive installed in my Mac by my local Authorised Apple Service Centre. They also migrated all my data and programs from the old drive to the new one. Everything appears to work okay except Entourage 2004. It crashes when I do any of the following:
1) Select a message which has an attachment (however, not all messages with an attachment cause a crash).
2) Select Entourage Help from the Help pull down menu.
In either case, I get a message that Entourage has unexpectedly quit (no error number).
I have rebuilt my database, deleted preferences, deleted the "com.microsoft.Entourage.plist" file and repaired permissions with Disk Utility, all with no result. I have also created a new user account in System Preferences and tested Entourage in the new user account but Entourage still crashes when I select Help or select a message with an attachment.
Any ideas to solve this problem would be appreciated.
Used Auto-update to download the latest version (11.4). The update downloads okay, but when Auto update is installing it unexpectedly quits. I repeated this a few times with same result. I then downloaded the update from Mactopia - When I click on the disk image to install the update the screen blanks momentarily but nothing happens.
I then followed the next suggestion which is to uninstall Office and reinstall the original software plus all updates. (I used the Remove Office program in the Additional tools folder to uninstall). However, when I insert the original Office 2004 program CD it's icon appears on the desktop but nothing happens when I double click on it - i.e. the same as with the update disk image - the screen blinks but nothing opens.
If I open a finder window the program CD appears in the menu but if I select it, the finder window shuts and I am back to the desktop.
Now I am in a real mess!! Not only do I not have my email, I don't have access to any of my word or excel documents either.

I'd contact the Apple Service Centre and explain the problem with the CD to
them.
Do other CDs work properly? Maybe they messed something up when installing
the new hard disk.

There have been so many people that have hijacked this thread I have no idea
what you have tried. It sounds like your base OS files are corrupt. You can
try applying the combo updater from Apple, but it might take an "Archive &
Install" to get your install corrected.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as theyıre applyingno need
to roll back or do a clean install.

It's always best to ask in your own subject. This way you give your info and
your situation. When multiple users use the same thread it can get
confusing. Especially as answers vary depending on OS, Tiger vs Leopard,
version of Entourage (X, 2004, 2008) and type of machine (PPC or Intel)
We have no idea what you have tried either. I suggest starting with this
page:
I haven't had anyone respond to the "Unknown error 16008" that caused a loss of all data from Entourage 2004.
I'm just about ready to go back to MS Outlook due to the problems and lack of functionality of Entourage. I hate the idea of putting MS on my Apple but need the interactive functions to manage all my business, family and personal email, schedule, tasks and tracking.

There are 70 messages from different users in this thread. There have been
lots of answers, but if you want specific help you need to start your own
thread.

I simply quit out of my Microsoft Entourage, and when i opened it again, it's like it had reset! All my emails were gone, and the little message popped up saying "welcome to microsoft entourage etc...". What happened? and is there anyway to get my emails back?

Entourage expects the folder to be in your Documents folder. For OS X users,
that's the Documents folder in your User's folder. When Entourage opens in a
new blank Identity, it's usually User error.
Most likely you have accidentally moved your data. Hopefully, you have not
deleted the file. If you have deleted the trash, it's gone. Sorry!
Select Switch Identity (under Entourage in the Menu bar) and see if your old
identity is still listed.
To find your old database, search for "Microsoft User Data" (without the
quotes).
If you have not used a new identity in Entourage, then copy the entire
Microsoft User Data folder to the correct location.
Fix if you have more than one Microsoft User Data Folder...
Move the entire identity folder you want to use to the Office Identities
folder that Entourage is recognizing. Your identity is named "Main" by
default. Be sure to rename one so you do not overwrite. Your identity folder
can contain more than one identity. Switch Identities to view your old mail.
If you have not used the new identity, delete it. If you have used it and
want to combine the new mail with your original database, drag each folder
to the desktop from one identity. This creates an MBOX file. Switch
identities. Drag the MBOX files into the folder window of Entourage.
You can delete the old folder after you are satisfied with the transfer.
My problem with Entourage is that it will not receive email. Also I have received a message that the data base is damaged. But when I attempt to rebuild the data base it tells me there is not enough room on the hard disc even though there is plenty. Not sure how to correct. It has been going on for weeks.
When rebuilding the database, it makes a copy of the old database and then repairs the original, which requires the same room as the database itself. That means if your Database is 2 GB large, I believe it will need up to 4 GB more at least to complete the repair. 2 GB of the original, a backup, and the one it is rebuilding. Perhaps it is only 2x and the backup is the original, I cannot recall. Look at your free space and see if you have 2X the free space as the size of the email file.

One user reported His problem goes away
after
* he moved his Microsoft User Data folder to the desktop.
* he re-installed Office 2008 from DVD, did the SP1 upgrade and then
moved his user data back.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Entourage
there.
You will have to enter your Account info. Set Accounts to leave mail on
server for the test.
If Entourage works in the new User. Move you Identity in your regular User's
account to Shared. Switch back to the new User and drag from Shared your
Identity (it copies so your data is safe). If they are the same name it will
overwrite. If you want to keep the test Identity, just rename it. (move your
folder back from Shared after the test or Entourage in your regular User's
folder will open in a new blank Identity)
If Entourage works with your old Identity in the new User. Then it's your
User's folder.
If Entourage is not working in a new Identity, then it's your base OS files.
First try the combo updater. If you continue to have problems, do an
"Archive & Install".
