I was considering to purchase Office for Mac 2004 via the Student
Select program at my university (http://
www.campustechshop.uwaterloo.ca/software_main.html) when I heard about
the upcoming Office for Mac 2008.
I'm left with a couple of questions:
1. Will licenses for Office for Mac 2008 also be available through the
Student Select program? (and how long does this process usually take?)

I have little doubt that Office 2008 will be available through the same
channels a prior versions, but as far as a timeline - we have no way of
knowing. Your campus shop would better be able to fill you in on that.

As I understand it the deals only apply to boxed retail purchases *only*, so
licensing programs & "bundles" wouldn't qualify. BTW - There is only one
deal - the SuperSuite is an enhancement to the original Technology
Guarantee. The first offered the upgrade @ US$10/CA$15 for purchases between
9/25/07-3/15/08. The newer offer "sweetened" the deal by reducing the price
to $6.99/$10 respectively & applies to purchases made between
11/1/07-1/15/08. IOW, it is an "either/or" proposition.
We are currently using the Student Teacher Office 2004 and we have the opportunity to upgrade to the 2008 version. Wondering if we should go to the full office version or stay with the student teacher edition. what are the pros/cons? Thanks

There are no cons, other than price, IMO.

The Home & Student version does not contain support for Exchange. It also
does not include Automator actions for Entourage. Today is the last day for
the Suite Deal where you can get a free upgrade to the full version of
Office for Mac 2004 Special Media Edition or select the Home & Student
version that includes the 3 licenses when purchasing Student & Teacher
version of Office 2004. For links and prices:
I agree with Jolly Roger: stay with the Home and Student version. You get
three licences
You do not need Exchange Support unless you have an Exchange server for your
work mail. If you did, you would know about it! And if you did, work would
normally hand you a copy of Entourage 2008, because they should get licences
with their client licence pack.
You can get Automator actions all over the Internet, or make your own
Cheers

... Unless you have a need to do commercial output, in which case the EULA
for H/S prohibits such use of the product, just as did the EULA for the
prior S/T packages.

Yep - but take a good look at what's included as opposed to Standard & Media
as well as the significantly more restrictive EULA. As long as you're
comfortable with all that - not to say that anyone shouldn't be - the H/S
Edition is a definite value. Also, take into consideration that Educational
versions traditionally *do not* qualify for upgrade to another Educational
release - you have to repurchase or upgrade to one of the other editions.

This is the big question - for me. If I save a document (Word, Excel, etc.) in my Home & Student Office Mac 2008, can I send it to someone and have him open in an earlier version of Office Mac (either Windows or Mac)?
I am expecting that I could save it on my Mac in a non-2008 format and send, but I'm hoping that is not necessary.

Hi booker!
To answer your question, yes, you have two options:
1. Save the documents as .doc, .xls or .ppt, which are the older formats.
On a side note: please begin new threads when asking your own question.
You've replied to someone else's thread and are changing the topic. If
you start one of your own then all the replies will be appropriate to
your problem.
At $150, the full H&S version is considerably cheaper than the regular
version's upgrade price of $240.
The Student & Teacher license specifically states that it doesn't
provide an upgrade path, though the last several releases have allowed
you to use it to upgrade to the Full version.
I cannot use the 'quick look' feature on any powerpoints saved using Mac Office 2008. I am saving the files using the .PPT format, but they are not generating any previews when I select the file and hit the space bar. I have tried installing Office on 2 Macs and they both exhibited the same lack of preview issue.
I have a question: I just got a mac and I was gonna buy Mac Office 2004 then I heard about 2008 about a week ago. I have the test drive on my mac now but I haven't opened it yet. If I buy Mac Office 2004 Student and Teacher Edition, can I get a free upgrade to 2008? I ask because I can get a huge discount on 2004 from my school computer store and 2008 isn't gonna be offered for a couple months.

Uh, maybe?
In general, MS does not give free upgrades to new versions. Office 2004
service pack 2 is a free up*date* to the same version, not an
upgrade--Office 2008 is a paid upgrade.
Supposedly there is a technology guarantee where if you buy Office 2004,
you can get Office 2008 almost-free. But--they just redesigned the site
so no one can find the page with the details and right now we are not
sure whether it still is in effect.
HOWEVER, if you get a huge discount from your University Store, then it
sounds like you are not buying the retail Student/Teacher edition ($150
is the price at Amazon.com and at university stores)--but some special
volume license version for less than $150. Such special versions are not
eligible for the almost-free deal or for upgrade discounts or for
anything special.
Office 2008 was released today---will it really take your U a couple
months to get it?
Yes, provided that they have installed the Office 2007/2008 converter
available from the Microsoft website.
(The Mac version is not there yet: the beta version currently on the Mac
website will be replaced by a "Released" version in the next few days.)
In the meantime, the Beta version will get them out of trouble.
Cheer

I have just installed Office for Mac 2008 and uninstalled 2004 version. Now it has affected my keyboard settings and affected the sound effect in Entourage.
Yeah, it's broken. We're waiting on a fix from Microsoft or Apple.
Sorry: It's a bug.
