Everytime I try to log-in I keep getting this window saying:
"A newer version of MSN Messenger for Mac is available. You must download the newer version in order to continue using MSN Messenger. Would you like to do this now?".
I click yes to downlaod now.
Then I get this "Messenger.bin" icon on my desktop.
I open that but all it does is kind of duplicate and I now have two [the second one says "Messenger.bim.cpgz"].
So I try to log-in again and I get that same message.
So this time I click NO.
The box disappears, but pops back up if I try to log-in again.
I don't know what to do.

Re: MAC OS X - Messenger 6.0.3 - problem installing "newer version"
everytime I try to open msn messanger , even when i download it it doesn't want to open anything, even when i download it, also how do i get the messanger on the desktop icon?
I had the same problem, and tried everything..adiumX, Mercury Messenger... I guess a lot of people are having the same problem. Microsoft is obviously notThe only thing that worked was to switch to yahoo messenger!
I've had the same problem. Downloaded v6.03 and installed it. It started for me fine a couple times. Now it reports "need to install a newer version". I dont understand it, the last release was 6.03 back in Aug 2007!? Why does it keep asking me to "install a newer version" ?
I've got the same problem - it's the reason for coming on here tonight. I get the message, bin icon and the message that it is not compressed and stuffit-expander can't open it. I'm trying to get set up to use webcam and contact family. It's very frustrating. Is it possible that OS X 10.3.9 can't manage the new version?

If you have a problem installing messenger, the solution is simple.
You have to go to www.microsoft-messenger.for-mac.com, scroll to the bottom and click on download "messenger for mac 7" or "messenger for mac 6.0.2" Or you can go to the msn homepage and search "messenger for mac" and it will let you find this page. Then follow the installation instructions. If you just download the messenger (messenger.bim) on the regular I'M page, it will NOT work. You have to find the messenger for mac to download. Hope this helps.
I can not sign into MSN Messenger. When I do an error pops up saying "Either date & time settings are incorrect, or digital certificate file is not valid or installed on your computer." How do I fix this problem.

have the same problem with the file messenger.bin that duplicates... but nobody here has given the solution, has somebody solve this?? i need the answer
just got a MBP I am pretty new to Mac and I also got with it the Office 2008, but It looks like they have a new version of the messenger and the thing is that I was trying to install it and it doesn't work is giving me this error...
You cannot install Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume.
What does that mean because I know I have an older version of the messenger and I would like to know if I have to uninstall the older version or what and how I do it please help help S.O.S...
Isn't this automatically update because I don't receive any updates notices and I check in my system of how I have the updates and I have them as automatically.... so what is going on

I had the same problem with the latest Messenger, version 7.0.1. I just couldn't sign in because it wanted a newer version installed, which is nonsensical because I downloaded the newest version. I stumbled on the solution by accident. It is really simple. You probably have more than one version of Messenger installed on jou computer without knowing it. Do the following:
* Go to Applications.
* Click once on Microsoft Office to see what programs you have there. You might find a Microsoft Messenger there.
* If so, click once on the name to see the icon. At the bottom of the icon you will see which version you have. If older than the one you downloaded, trash it.
* Look in the Applications folder above Microsoft Office - the latest Messenger I had downloaded was placed there, not inside the Office file.
* Now click once on the name to see the icon and check which version it is. If it's the one you downloaded, double-click on it and sign in.
* Also, see if you have an icon of Messenger on you dock. If so, drag it off. Then drag the icon of the Messenger you downloaded on the dock. Version 7's icon is outlined in white.
* When you downloaded and installed Messenger, it automatically searched your Mac for an older version and deleted it. But it didn't delete ALL versions - that's the problem. In my Trash I discovered MSN Messenger 3 deleted by the installing program, but I still had Messenger 4 in my MS Office file, which I trashed myself.
* You can also search your Mac with Spotlight to check if there are still other older versions of Messenger hidden away somewhere on your hard drive. If so, trash them. After a lot of teeth gnashing and hair pulling, Messenger 7 works fine now. I hope my solution will apply to you.
PS: If all else fails, download Yahoo! Messenger at messenger.yahoo.com - then your friends just have to open an account with Yahoo! too.
PSS: Did you know that you can chat to MSN and Yahoo! buddies within iChat (Mac's native messenger), using Jabber? Jabber is an instant messaging system built into iChat. To find out how it works, go to: allforces.com/2005/05/06/ichat-to-msn-through-jabber
Everytime I try to log-in I keep getting this window saying: "A newer

The download instructions from that site follow:
To install this update
1. Print this page if you want to use it as a reference when you are
offline.
2. Quit any applications that are running, including all Office
applications, Microsoft Messenger, and Office Notifications, because they
might interfere with installation.
3. Make sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements.
4. Click Download, or click the link for the language version that you
want.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen to save the file to your hard
disk. If you are using Safari, the downloaded file is saved to the desktop
unless you specified a different location in the Preferences dialog box of
Safari. To check your preferences, on the Safari menu, click Preferences,
and then click General.
6. If the file you downloaded does not expand automatically, on your hard
disk, double-click the file that you downloaded in step 5.
7. Drag the Microsoft Messenger icon to the Applications folder on your
hard disk.
8. After the application has been copied to your hard disk, you can drag
the Microsoft Messenger volume to the Trash, and then drag the file that you
downloaded to the Trash.
9. Double-click the Microsoft Messenger application that you copied to
your hard disk to start the setup program, and then follow the instructions
on the screen.
Let me know if this works for you

Hi!
Can you be more specific about what's happening when you attempt to open Mac
Messenger? Do you see any dialogs at all? Did you drag the "Mac Messenger"
icon from the .dmg image to your local hard drive?

I am using OS X 10.4.11 on a G4 ppc PowerBook and have downloaded and installed Messenger:Mac 7...
However, when I try to run the app it attempts to log me in, before hanging after about a minute and then presenting the following message:
"Sign in to Microsoft Messenger failed because the service is not responding. The service is not available or you may not be connected to the internet"
I can assure you I am connected to the internet as i am writing this message and before installing this update i had no issues connecting to msn, I installed it on an intel mac with no issue and have even tried regressing to an earlier version on my mac and now experience the same problem.
A friend with a ppc iMac is experiencing the same problem, is there a service issue or is there an issue with msn?

Hi Dave,
If you're upgrading from 6.0.3, it may be that Messenger 7.0.1 is having
trouble with your existing preferences. If this is the problem, deleting
your preferences would probably help.
Note: Deleting your preferences will clear your conversation history!
To do this, delete the following:
- The "Microsoft User Data" folder in ~/Documents
- The "com.microsoft.messenger.plist" file in ~/Library/Preferences
In both these cases, the tilde (~) refers to the user directory on your
system drive.
Let me know if this works for you

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately this has not solved the problem and I am still getting the same error as outlined in my first post.
I backed up my conversation history to my desktop with different folder names so as not to lose them, this shouldn't have affected anything should it?
I'm connected to the internet via a wireless router, though no port settings etc have been changed on this device so this should not affect it, just out of interest and to check every avenue, do you know the ports which need to be open for Messenger:mac to work?

Hi Dave,
You shouldn't need to open any ports. Is your router a Netgear router by any
chance? If so, some users have reported that downgrading your firmware might
solve this problem.
Backing up your conversation history shouldn't have any effect on sign-in

It's actually just "microsoft-messenger.for-mac.com" wthout the www.

No, it doesn't help! I've installed Messenger on one Mac but on this one (both running OSX 10.4.1.1) I keep getting told I need a newer version. I have no old version, I do not have Office or any MS applications whatsoever. Well, I suppose an old version of Internet Explorer might be kicking around, but that's it.
You know what some of us Mac users are like about Microsoft - how about convincing me?

Hi!
What version of Messenger are you having this issue with? You can find this
out by going to the Messenger menu > About Messenger...
