Today we launched Messenger for Mac 7.
What’s new you ask? Let me tell you! Messenger for Mac 7 includes cool new features for both the corporate service (works with Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007) and personal service (works with the Windows Live service). But the biggest milestone here is that Messenger for Mac 7 delivers audio and video for the first time in the corporate service.
One of the exciting features in this release is Bonjour support in Messenger for Mac, available in both personal and corporate services. Using the Mac OS X Bonjour technology, Messenger for Mac 7.0 includes the ability to detect other Messenger for Mac users that are near by on the same local network. Are you at work on the weekend and want to check if anyone else is around? Turn on Bonjour to see who is there…
If you work in an organization deploying Office Communications Server 2007, I think you will enjoy the new features in the corporate service. Messenger for Mac 7 makes it a whole lot easier to track down co-workers you need to contact. Using the new search feature, you can easily search for people in your organization and start communicating with them.
You will also notice more detailed presence information that is compatible with the presence model of Office Communications Server 2007. Messenger for Mac 7 displays additional presence states to better reflect your contacts (or your own) availability. For example, Messenger for Mac will automatically set your status to ‘In a call’ when you are in an Audio or Video call. Messenger for Mac 7.0 also allows you to add a personal note in case you want to provide a little more information about your status (for example: “I’m available through Messenger only!”).
Through the corporate service in Messenger for Mac, you can now conduct virtual meetings with your co-workers using audio and video calls. You can communicate inside or outside your corporate network, you can communicate with co-workers running Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 on Windows, you can even participate in a multi-party Audio or Video conference.
Speaking of Audio and Video support, in the blog post "A Chat about Messenger", posted back in November, I shared with you background information on why AV is not available yet in the Personal service. We are on track with the plan mentioned in the last post, as we are delivering Audio and Video on Corporate service first. We are making progress and working on the delivery of Audio and Video for the personal service and are looking forward to getting the feature out there and in your hands as soon as we can!
There are a few other new features we included in the Personal service…
You can now assign nicknames to your contacts. Do you know two people named Jack and can never tell them apart in your contact list, since they both have their display name set to Jack? Put an end to the confusion and assign them some identifiable nicknames! Do you have a friend that insists on changing his\her display name to a different expression everyday? Use a nickname to reduce the amount of time you spend trying to identify your contact in the contact list.
Has anyone out there finally reached the point of having too many contacts for their own good and now can’t find anyone on that long list of contacts? Just use the new contact search field to look them up.

The point of this was...
Props for MS's attempt at updating Messenger (even though it was mentioned that it wouldn't happen till 2009 with a brand new messenger service), but with barely any new features for the Personal side and only a slight facelift to an already bloated user interface, I'm going to stick with my Adium X messenger and Skype solution until Messenger for Mac comes up to par with the Windows side. Also, what is WITH the retro alert sounds? Would it hurt to update the "incoming message" and other sounds to match the latest version of Windows Live messenger?

What format do I need photos in to change my profile picture?
I keep trying to change my profile pic, and it doesn't allow me to chose any other than the one's it comes with by default. It keeps telling me that i'm not using the correct file format. Any ideas?

Nickname Permanently Changes Screen Name?
Maybe I'm not using this properly, but the first thing I noticed about nicknames is that they seem to replace the contact's original screen name. The problem with that is that my contacts usually amend useful information to their screen names. Do nicknames permanently replace screen names of contacts? And if they do, could this be changed?

There are still a few Panther holdouts, you know. And it's rather annoying to be denied features that Windows had back before the Mac was even on Tiger.
And to anyone who wonders why I'm still on Panther, upgrading the laptop will happen after I get a new primary Mac. And as my chosen mac is the Mini, and Apple haven't seen fit to update it yet, "just move to Leopard" is not a viable option.

The one feature for the Personal service that I still need is offline messaging. Right now, people send those to me not knowing that I never get them. It's like a voicemail box that I can't check. Any word on when that feature will get added?
While we're at it, how about Growl support?

There is a bug in the German localization:
When you click your own picture in the personal list,
in order to set your online status, there will be two entries for "Mittagspause", and instead of "Als offline anzeigen" there is a "<separator>"-entry.
Also, why is it still not possible to send end receive offline messages?
That's annoying. Often when I switch to my Boot Camp Windows, where WLM starts, it presents me lots of rather old offline messages, which where simply not delivered to me by Microsoft Messenger.

Localization Errors
A few localization errors on the swedish version. "På lunch" (Out for lunch) is listed twice and "I ett samtal" (On the phone) is gone. To change the nickname of a contact I ctrl + click and choose "Tillåt" (Allow). I suppose it should say "Lägg till ett smeknamn" (Add a nickname).

You can go back to the original screen by changing again and remove the screen name you've chosen.
I've found another error here. When I ctrl + click (right click) a contact with a changed screen name <separator> appears in the menu.

Well I'm hoping that the next release comes soon on the heels of this release. Albeit it is good to have corporate video calling integrated, it would be better to get the personal video integrated. I'm hoping we won't have to wait around much longer for that to happen.

But at the same time, i'd like to raise a question about your work.
What do you think about the integration of msn 7 in the mac os environment.
Do you realise that you didn't add the function to make a pic from the eyesight, or even add the iphoto library accessible.
It's my first time of msn for mac, and probably my last. Adium is far better, and it uses mac os environment.
Please make a decent application, not a half version of the windows one.

Please provide a real major release for Messenger. Thanks for the release that you provided today but honestly how can you call this a "major" release? A new icon, tiny interface tweaks allows you to call this a major release? Please take some time and think of the possibilities that you have as Mac software developers. You have the chance to create a great software for a great operating system. Make the effort and take a risk. Develop a gorgeous software that is both graphically redone from ground up and that provides features that Windows users have had for ages now.
I know you focused alot on adding "Bonjour" support, but was this a major request from the Mac users... No. Listen to your users as they are the ones that use your software. Video and Audio support has been the number one request, and if I were your product manager I would have never approved a release of the next major upgrade to Messenger if that feature was not available for everyone.
Sorry for the negative feedback, but you guys need it.
Good luck on actually creating something new.

First of all i'd like to thank you for this release, it's nice to see that things are not stalled in the mac msn front.
As much as I enjoy the effort, I think you should try to integrate better with mac os as a whole. See, Adium, Mail.app or any RSS feed reader sport a label on top of its icon indicating messages to read. Why not put that into Messenger? And why use a different notification system when everybody uses Growl?
See, listen to your clients. No audio or video for non-corporate? Ok, I can live with that for now. But why leave us out of the offline messaging? It's part of your protocol for years now, unaware contacts simply leave them expecting us to receive those messages.
Overall I don't think it's a bad product, but it's lacking. And lacking a lot compared to Skype, for example. I still hope you will come up with a product on par with the Windows version. I'll be waiting.

I don't know why, but in the spanish version I can't set nicknames, it doesn't even appear on the menu!
The GUI really sucks, it needs a lot of improvements!! Why don't add Personal Messages to the contact window? Just as Windows' Messenger, cause it sucks when someone tells you "hey look what im hearing" and you need to go to the contact list window, maximize it (cause I can't edit nicknames) and then really see what they are listening to.
But not everything is so bad, the contact search is really good but it should be like iTunes do, or Windows Messenger. And now you can talk while you're offline, that's really awesome, thank you!
But you need a lot of improvements, but A LOT!!!!!!!!

I'm almost always willing to give the Microsoft for Mac team the benefit of the doubt, and of course you're not trying to put out disappointing products, but I thought the whole point of integrating with Windows Live was so everyone could get A/V chat? I dislike the clunkly look of aMSN, but c'mon...we already knew you could do A/V with corporate in the beta, but I thought the big reveal when 7 launched was near-parity to the PC side. Oh well. Any update on when we could expect that on the Personal side?

OK, so there is a new feature for personal accounts: bonjour support! But, why this cannot recognize other users using bonjour protocol with different IM clients (pidgin, ichat, skype)? I mean, the big plus for bonjour is just the ability to overcome all these differences and now we're back to the starting point?

Six months has been passed since the last post, which claims successfully on A/V implement for corporate service.
(closed beta -> release takes half a yr.)
I wondered if we could see the new release of full functioned MSN this year.

- Avatars from my contacts don't show up, I always see that green Messenger icon as avatar
- File transfers are still extremely slow for me
- The interface of this application is HUGE, a chat window is really big and could be much smaller if you ask me

Too little, too late...
A new major upgrade of Messenger is certainly welcome, yet why does it feel like a dot upgrade instead? Here are some things you could have worked on prior to release.
A/V CHAT FOR PERSONAL ACCOUNTS
I know this is coming, but it's taking far too long.
A REDESIGN OF THE USER INTERFACE
It's big, clunky, and ugly. Please stop borrowing design elements from previous versions of Messenger. The big, blue Send button needs to go. Rework that ugly Display Pictures side panel. Rework the Conversation History window. They clearly feel like they've been ported over from Messenger 6. Make this application feel like a Leopard application - everything from the colours to the borders.
WINDOWS LIVE SUPPORT
Despite the logo present in the application, Messenger 7 does not support elements of Windows Live properly. The beauty of Windows Live Messenger is that you can edit a contact's details (e.g., first name, last name, etc.) and sync it over to Windows Live Mail's contact list. Furthermore, with these details, you can modify the manner in which contacts are listed in the Messenger window (e.g., list them according to first name/last name). Messenger 7 needs to support this. The current nickname support is tediously annoying.
OFFLINE MESSAGING
There are two types of offline messaging. One involves chatting to contacts who appear offline. The other involves leaving messages for contacts who are actually offline for them to view the next time they sign on, and vice versa. Windows Live Messenger has supported this for a long time. It's simply absurd that the Mac client cannot do this. Please add this in.
NEW NOTIFICATION SCHEMES
Apart from a slight redesign, the notifications in Messenger 7 are exactly the same as Messenger 6. They need to go. Add new notification schemes that match the look and feel of Mac OS. Support Growl if you have to. I suggest reading the Apple Human Interface Guidelines for some tips.
FILE TRANSFERS
File transfers are about as stable as a one-legged chair. They're annoyingly slow, and more often than not, fail to register that a file has successfully transferred following completion of a transfer. This needs fixing as soon as possible.
Please. Give people a reason to continue using Messenger.

You can change nicknames in the spanish version. It's just a localization issue (the same in the swedish version). I have to choose "Tillåt" (Allow) when right clicking a contact to change their nickname.

Why does it only support communicator 2007 ? We have 2005 and its totally useless in our environment. If audio / video is only available in 2007 it should still support earlier versions without the additional features. Talk about a waste of time...

I wondered if we could see the new release of full functioned MSN this year.

I like updates but...
Nice to a an update once in a while. I do have a few problems with Messenger:
- Avatars from my contacts don't show up, I always see that green Messenger icon as avatar
- File transfers are still extremely slow for me
- The interface of this application is HUGE, a chat window is really big and could be much smaller if you ask me
- Offline messaging, I really need that

I know this is coming, but it's taking far too long.
A REDESIGN OF THE USER INTERFACE
It's big, clunky, and ugly. Please stop borrowing design elements from previous versions of Messenger. The big, blue Send button needs to go. Rework that ugly Display Pictures side panel. Rework the Conversation History window. They clearly feel like they've been ported over from Messenger 6. Make this application feel like a Leopard application - everything from the colours to the borders.
WINDOWS LIVE SUPPORT
Despite the logo present in the application, Messenger 7 does not support elements of Windows Live properly. The beauty of Windows Live Messenger is that you can edit a contact's details (e.g., first name, last name, etc.) and sync it over to Windows Live Mail's contact list. Furthermore, with these details, you can modify the manner in which contacts are listed in the Messenger window (e.g., list them according to first name/last name). Messenger 7 needs to support this. The current nickname support is tediously annoying.
OFFLINE MESSAGING
There are two types of offline messaging. One involves chatting to contacts who appear offline. The other involves leaving messages for contacts who are actually offline for them to view the next time they sign on, and vice versa. Windows Live Messenger has supported this for a long time. It's simply absurd that the Mac client cannot do this. Please add this in.
NEW NOTIFICATION SCHEMES
Apart from a slight redesign, the notifications in Messenger 7 are exactly the same as Messenger 6. They need to go. Add new notification schemes that match the look and feel of Mac OS. Support Growl if you have to. I suggest reading the Apple Human Interface Guidelines for some tips.
FILE TRANSFERS
File transfers are about as stable as a one-legged chair. They're annoyingly slow, and more often than not, fail to register that a file has successfully transferred following completion of a transfer. This needs fixing as soon as possible.
Please. Give people a reason to continue using Messenger.
