Also having problems, I'm getting a screen telling me to click on a link on an email I received to confirm my email account. Only problem is I have no such email so I click on the "I've completed the 3 steps" and go into an endless loop.
I have signed into my Windows Live account and my password does work.
I installed it today and keep getting a box popping up saying "A newer version of MSN Messenger for Mac is available. You must download the newer version in order to continue using MSN Messenger. Would you like to do this now?" everytime I try to sign-in.
I click yes to download now and it downloads but then nothing happens.
So I try to sign-in again, but this time I click no and the box goes away, but if I try to sign-in again, IT POPS UP!
It's highly annoying.
I've tried and retried it so many times.
This worked for me for a while - a pain of course. But now I have a new laptop I tried installing the new version and I get a continuous loop where it keeps quitting and restarting.
Then I tried deleting all versions so I could re-install the older version since the newest doesn't seem to work, but still can't seem to fix it...
I cannot sign into Messenger for Mac 6.0.3 either as of yesterday Jan 31 ( Australian time)(neither will it sign in via Adium) tried all of the following to no avail:
1)Delete plist prefs file
2)Delete all plist prefs, messenger app & associated folders and reinstall
3)Turn off firewall and restart
4)zap PRAM
Nothing works and no one, as yet, appears to have a solution.
I should add to my above post that my MSN account works on a PC, I can log into hotmail etc no problems it's only Messenger for Mac. There's no error it just tells me either the internet or the messenger service is unavailable. All other internet apps and mail work fine.
Just tried an earlier version of Messenger. Same problem
Messenger 5.1 to 6.0.3 have a broken SOCKS5 implementation, which may be affecting some of you.
I configure proxy settings all day, every day, and I know how to configure client software to talk through a SOCKS5 server. So, when it doesn't work, and yet Adium happily talks to the MSN servers, something's broken in Messenger. Before it was blocked by their system, earlier versions of Messenger worked fine, using the same settings. Indeed, it was possible to launch old version, log in, quit, launch new version, fail to log in, quit, launch old version, log in, back and forth.
(Unfortunately Microsoft's support has been less than helpful, with nothing but "did you check your password was right?" "is the proxy server correct?". Trust me, it's broke.)
I just downloaded MSN 6.0.3 on my MacOSX 10.3.9 Mac.
The program launches ok, but when I try to log in, it tells me I need a newer version. I say yes to the download, it appears to be downloading something and then tells me:
The file "Messenger.bin" does not appear to be compressed or encoded. The application "Stuffit Expander.app" might be able to open this file.
Would you like to try opening the file using "Stuffit Expander.app"?
if the file does not open correctly it is advised that you obtain further information about the contents of this file from the sender or provider of the file "DONT TRY" "TRY"
I Hit Try it just keeps coming back over and over,
Hit Don't try and it stops.
I'm really annoyed but glad it's not just me.....thought i was going mad....or being really stupid!
I've uploaded Leopard to my mac & msn didn't work so i deleted it all, downloaded MSN 6.0.3....which seems to be all good but when signing in am told i have to upload a newer version in order for it to work....which i do....try signing in again and get the same bloody response....if i click no it closes! So so frustrating, i've wasted lots of time & been very stressed!
Any one out there who knows how i can gain my sanity back....and my friends?!?
have a similar problem but it says that my date and time are not set properly (but they are.. ) or that i need to install a digital certificate i tried everything installing newer version, reinstalling the hole office 2004...still nothing.. can anyone help please
Hi, i was able to log into msn messenger 6.0.3 earlier this week and now i'm unable to. keeps asking me to check my password/internet connection. tried other programs and they all worked. so is it some kinda bug due to a recent update?
my messenger is telling me that my internet is down ive double checked my email and password ,, ive restarted my computer and nothing my internet is fully running i i can run safari ! what do i do !
So can Microsoft offer us a way to solve this? I have having the same problem, I updated to leopard and all of a sudden my password doesn't work... argh! So annoying, tried everything possible for two days, please help!
Hmm a very big problem for me. I use gmail as well i might add and its not allowing me to sign into messenger. Someone help please?
I might also add that i tried installing msn messenger as well however it appears to continuously want to update itself... any help would be beautiful! Thank you.
same problem i was using yesterday but right know i cant sign on it says some errors or my internet connection is down but if i use another messenger i can sign in and than i try to connect with my msn mac 6.03 its says cnt connect but on the other hand it automatically sign me off in other comp
I am currently trying to log into messenger for mac and keep getting the same thing as you guys about the internet connection not being there and whatnot. I'm beginning to think that maybe their system got hit cause I thought it might have been just my computer but apparently not! Let me know if you get some kind of answer from them asap!
naw, your not the only one Court it says ether the service is down or i have no net, well i have net and going to email works. My PC friends msn is working so my guess is its possible its mac server problem but who knows could be completely something else...so relax enough that its just not you
It's only started happening for me tonight, so has anyone that posted at the start of this thread solved the issue for themselves?
I'm getting the error message/window that says "the service is not responding or you may not be connected to the internet" Clearly I am connected to the internet as I'm typing here!
I've rebooted the router, as I always blame my ISP (telstra bigpong) however, that hasn't resolved the issue.
I've posted over at apple.com.au discussion area but no answers there either
Download Adium, I hit the same problem for the first time tonight, donwloaded AdiumX (freeware) and I'm on msn straight away - it grabbed my contacts etc, so easy!
Been having the same problem with Msn Messenger as you guys above. Adium didn't work for me either. But finally Mercury messenger did. It's clumsy though...
Extremely frustrating. First I thought it was just my Mac. Finally I found my way here.
Still wonder where the problem is?
As I'm sure Micsoft won't offer any assistance, I hope someone else will...

Is there any way of actually notifying Microsoft that this serious sign-in problem exists? According to MSN Service Status, everything is fine when clearly it is not. Have wasted an hour or more bouncing round www.microsoft.com trying to find where you're supposed to report a problem without success.
Do people from Mactopia actually enter these things and tell disgruntled Customers what they are doing to fix their problem for people who have paid them money ??
Arrrghh!!! The most ridiculous thing is that on the help forum there
is a link from the Microsoft team to a supposed patch for the problem
that the team had been working on all week end. Great i thinks to me
self..The scurvy land luvers have hid it on me as it does not exsist
and is a fools errand. I cant believe how blatantly ignorant Microsoft
is, GOD I LOVE BEING A MAC USER!!!
well, the same problem is happening to me, i can't sign in. I guess this problem isn't ours... microsoft sucks. i think we'll just have to wait for them to solve the problem.
wait! the strangest thing happened: i signed in but all my contacts were blocked, now i can't sign in again.
did this happened to any of you?
this is weird :S
"wait! the strangest thing happened: i signed in but all my contacts were blocked,"
after multiple times of trying to sign in, it finally worked, only for all my contacts to be blocked, i tried signing in to my other account and got the problem with the service or my internet message again.
T-T it's bad enough having the most basic kind of msn messenger to start with, but when it stops working all together
On 2ŒŽ6“ú, ‰ºŒß11Žž03•ª, Rita <> wrote:

Still no luck
So over this.. ITs gets so frustrating.. Is there anything as good I can use instead? Seeing as I cant use msn, and microsoft arn't helping, I called and they said they couldn't help me over the phone as its web based, GREAT!
ATTENTION!
If you are having problems with the crap messenger like i was....for ages...then ADIUM works & it rocks....much better than messenger & works better with Mac's concepts!
It takes a bit of fiddiling with but it copies all your contacts from messenger...and any other accunts you may have.
Like i say you have to fiddle with the drop bars 'contacts' & 'view'....it may seem like it's not copied all your contacts but by fiddling i some how managed to get it all working.
Hope this helps.....and gets people not using messenger.....we did all buy Mac's go get away from the crap Microsoft!
MICROSOFT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now all I can do is use eBuddy thingy. From ebuddy.com Adium doesn't even work for me.
Will the earliest possible version be possible to log in?
BOTTOM LINE: Messenger for Mac is broke and it doesnt look like Microsoft are gonna fix it.
Lets hope that Microsoft get their act together. Doesnt say much for a company that size who ignores the end user. remind me again what we commit to witha EULA, shouldn't they at least take responsibility for their faulty software?
Is it a secret plot by microsoft to get us to switch from Mac? Bad news MS, i am a relatively new mac user and they are way ahead of you in consumer friendliness!!!!!!! get over it and sort Messenger with a 6.0.4 release which actually works!!!!!
Well that just sucks.. score one for the evil PC world..
I wondered if it helps if you remove all previous versions of messenger and then install an older version? or do you still run into that "a newer version is available" crap??
Glad to know there are others out there and its not just my lack of MAC know how - new mac user and can't say I am thoroughly over joyed since moving from a PC. Adium is great - but I miss my MSN ...

I have the exact same problem have you figured out a way to get around this issue?
It makes me wonder if I made the right decision to by a Mac? Or is it the other way around in confirming that Microsoft has blown it again.
Still not working. This is an eMac running 10.4.11. MSN used to work on our old iMac. My daughter needs it for her new job. Neither MSN or Adium will work. Have tried everything. Get the same error messages that have been posted
I'm not sure how or why some thing called 'messenger daemon & alerts daemon' has downloaded with messenger.
I've been having the exact same poblem as every one else so today i downloaded an older version of messenger & it works but with a glitch - i keep being asked to run Daemon with messenger, if i don't i can use the older verson but if i open it i can't open messenger!
Does this make sense to anyone? I'm not sure if it's downloaded virus? altho i thought Mac's couldn't get a virus?
So confused!
have a problem for sign-in to MEssenger mac 6.0.3 that when i click sign in they always show that the server is not available or not connect to internet and i cant figure out what should i do check my network it's already connect and also check system requirement or other thing that is ok. If someone know please let me know how to solve this such problem that make me so frustrate to using MAC

I am also a new MAC owner, but have dreamed of owning one for years. I will concur with most of you that it is definitely MS that has lost another customer for years. I HATE MS. I will be following the others and using Adium. anything is better than MS.
Ever since I installed Leopard I've been unable to use Messenger. I keep getting this error:
Either date and time settings are incorrect, or the digital
certificate file is not valid or installed on your computer. If date
and time are correct, see your network administrator to verify that
your digital certificate file is valid and installed.
My boyfriend has the same Macbook and he has OS X Tiger and Messenger works fine. Is there any solution to this problem??
In my case, after failing to sign in, a window appears that asks to verify time and date and, if that is OK, which it is, that a digital certificate file is not valid or installed in the computer. I tried to find that out but after seeing all this posts since December, it is clear to me that MS is either unable for some reason to solve the problem, or it is not interested at all.
Im having a problem where i cant even sign in at all, i click the sign
in button type out user name password etc then the spinning cursor
thing appears and MSN crashes leaving the error report log in tow.
Tried Adium again and changed port number to 80 and got connected...
As far as I understand Adium's comments this indicates a firewall problem.
I changed the port number as well in iChat Preferences and it worked as well. Didn't find a way to change the port in MSN Messenger...
I try to sign on to my msn it stays on for 20 seconds or so then the timer comes up and it automatically quits i have tried a number of different things to do but none seems to work!

I've downloaded the freeware AdiumX and it works beautifully-- I've had the MSN signin problem for several days now, and I've tried to correct it. Adium imports all your contacts and works seamlessly. If MSN can't work, then use Adium, it's as easy as using MSN and your other parties, to whom you chat, don't see any differences.
i'm currently using Mac OS X leopard version 10.5.2 and i've got the same problem as MARIA TOVAR..it says that
"either the date and time settings are incorrect,or the digital certificate file is not valid or installed on your computer. If date and time are correct, see your network administrator to verify that your digital certificate file is valid or installed."
I really have no idea in solving this problem, and i urgently need to use my messenger.someone pls help me with this problem.

FYI... I just downloaded AdiumX and it works a treat. I can work at home and chat with my Windows Messenger-using colleagues in at the office. Very configurable stand-alone app with tabbed conversations.

I have been able to use MSN since I upgraded my Mac this year and all of a sudden it wont work. I'm getting the same problems - 'you're not connected to the internet", "you need to download a newer version" over and over again... nice to see Mircosoft doing nothing for their customers since January!
I'm trying to logon to MSN, but all i keep getting is the "wrong username or password" alert. Although all is correct since i'm logging on through hotmail. I also tried to log on using other emails and yet i get the same alert! Please help!

hey guys im having the same problems, i have installed Messenger for Mac version 6.0.3 in a Mac Os X 10.5.2 and it doesn't work.
I was using it perfectly just a while ago and suddenly a window pop up and said that messenger had an error or something and stopped working.
Then i was going to sing in to my hotmail account but i couldn't and it kept me telling the same thing :
Windows Live ID is unavailable from this site for one of the following reasons:
This site may be experiencing a problem.
The site may not be a member of Windows Live ID.
it keeps showing the same message every time a try to sing in. It is getting very frustrating i really need the information there and i need to use messenger to talk to my friends.
if somebody could tell me what to do or something i will really appreciate it.
thank you.

If you are having issues signing in using the Personal (Windows Live)
service with Messenger 6.0.3 or Messenger 7, please see below for things to
try. This has been modified from earlier versions to add Messenger 7
information, as well as OS 10.5.x to the mix.
Here is some standard troubleshooting to try if you are unable to sign-in.
1. Make sure you entered your password correctly. Passwords are case
sensitive
2. Go to the Sign-in dialog and uncheck ³Save Password², click OK. Then quit
and relaunch Messenger. When you try to sign-in manually enter your
password, but do not save.
3. Try to sign-in again to see if it might be server related. Server issues
may take a few hours to resolve. If you always take two tries after
launching the application to sign-in, please delete your preferences and
setup Messenger again. Information about deleting your preferences can be
found below.
4. Check to see if you have the OS Firewall enabled. 10.4.x If so, make sure
you have an exception for the listing ³MSN Messenger². If not, you will need
to create a New exception. The OS firewall settings are set in System
Preferences | Sharing | Firewall tab. 10.5.x instructions: System
Preferences | Security | Firewall and either enable ³All incoming
connections² (allows everything), ³Allow only essential services², or
choose ³Set Access for specific services . . .². The first option allows
everything. The second & third options are potential culprits. If you have
either of the latter 2 options, you need to make an exception for Messenger
by clicking the + button and adding the application to the list of
exceptions.
5. If you have a firewall on your router, please make sure to add Messenger
as an expection or open the ports for chatting. Port 1863 over TCP.
6. If you are behind proxies, please make sure they are setup correctly in
the System Preferences | Network. If that doesn¹t help, please set them up
manually in Messenger | Preferences | Accounts. Make sure you have the
correct ³Type² chosen.
7. Are you running any network traffic utilities, such as Little Snitch,
NetBarrier, etc. If so, please make sure you are running the latest version.
You will need to make sure you have allowed Messenger as an exception in any
utility that blocks network traffic, or you will be unable to sign-in.
8. OS X 10.4.x and later: Launch the Keychain Access application, located in
your Utilities folder. Look on the left pane for the x509 anchors. Do any
certificates show for the x509 anchors? If so, do you have the ³Secure
Server Certification Authority² certificate? If not, you will need to copy
this certificate from another Macintosh into the x509 anchors in your
keychain, or reinstall the OS. The certificate allows for a more secure
login. OS X 10.5.x: Launch Keychain Access located in your Utilities
folder. Choose File -> Add to Keychain, then select
/System/Library/Keychains/X509Certificates.obsoleted. You should now be able
to view the x509 anchors. Do any certificates show for the x509 anchors? If
so, do you have the ³Secure Server Certification Authority² certificate? If
not, you will need to copy this certificate from another Macintosh into the
x509 anchors in your keychain, or reinstall the OS. The certificate allows
for a more secure login.
9. Delete your preferences, then try to setup Messenger and sign-in again
> * All preferences are located in your ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft folder
> for Messenger 6.0.3 and in ~/Library/Preferences for Messenger 7.0
> * com.microsoft.Messenger.plist
> * com.microsoft.MessengerDaemon.plist
> * com.microsoft.Messenger.rtc.plist
> * Microsoft Messenger User Cache
> * Microsoft Messenger User Cache.plist (Located in the

> 7.0)
If none of the above works for you, please send an Apple System Profile
Report and a Messenger Log. (instructions below). A TCPDump (instructions
below) may also be requested at a later time. Please make sure no other
network applications are running at the time, outside of Messenger when
gathering a TCPDump. Thanks.
Getting an Apple System Profile Report:
1. Go under the blue apple menu and choose About This Mac
2. Click the ³More Info . . .² button
3. Choose Save and select a name for the file
Enabling Messenger Logs for Messenger 6.0.3:
Quit Messenger
Go to /Applications/Utilities and launch the Terminal application
Type the following on one line exactly as you see below:
defaults write ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/com.microsoft.Messenger
EnableConnectionLogging -bool true
Disabling Messenger Logs for Messenger 6.0.3: Quit Messenger
Go to /Applications/Utilities and launch the Terminal application
Type the following on one line exactly as you see below:
defaults write ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/com.microsoft.Messenger
EnableConnectionLogging -bool false
Enabling/Disabling Messenger Logs for Messenger 7:
Launch Messenger
Messenger | Preferences | General tab
Under the Logging section check the checkbox ³Save a log . . .² to enable
logging
Under the Logging section uncheck the checkbox ³Save a log . . .² to disable
logging
Locating Messenger Logs: Messenger logs are located in your ~/Documents
folder and the file name is Microsoft Messenger.log
Deleting Messenger Logs: Quit Messenger
Move the log named Microsoft Messenger.log to the trash and empty it
Notes about Messenger Logs: Enabling logs saves a file containing personal
information to ~/Documents. Anyone with access to this directory can open
this file.
They are not automatically deleted
They will continue to grow in size if you don't delete them from time to
time or disable logging
Deleting your log without disabling logging will create a new log on launch
of Messenger
Deleting your com.microsoft.messenger.plist file (preference file) will
clear out any settings for logging. You will have to re-enable the logging
again if you want to get a Messenger log file
Getting a TCPDump log:
1) Open System Preferences and choose the Network item. In the Show
selector choose Network Status; you should see a list of network interfaces
- the current network adapter in use will have a green dot to the left of
its name. If you see more than one adapter with a green dot then you will
have to figure out which one is the adapter connected to the internet. The
description text for the network adapter should show its IP address (looks
something like 182.168.0.14) - jot this IP address down as you will need it
later. If the description text does not contain the IP address then you
should double click on the network interface to open it up. Once you are
examining this network interface choose the TCP/IP tab and jot down the IP
address.
2) Using the Network Utility (found at /Applications/Utilities/Network
Utility.app) select the Info tab and cycle through the Network Interfaces
selector looking for one whose IP address matches the IP address that you
found in step 1. When you have found the matching network adaptor you will
need to note the Unix network interface name shown in the selector;
typically something like fw0, en0 or en1.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before proceeding any further make sure to close down any
applications that access the network. These include Web browsers, Email
programs, Chat programs, etc. This will help keep your private data private
as well as reduce the amount of noise (or non-applicable data) in the
network capture.
3) Open the terminal application found at
/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
4) Type the following line into the Terminal application making sure to
substitute the XXX with your active network adapter's name (found in step
2). Once the proper network name is substituted for the XXX placeholder hit
the enter/return key to start the network capture. This will start the
network capture and dump the output to a file named NetworkCapture.txt on
your desktop.
sudo tcpdump i XXX s 10000 U -w ~/Desktop/networkcapt.txt ip proto
TCP
IMPORTANT NOTE: Once you have entered the above line and hit enter you will
be asked for your password; your Mac OS X login password is required to run
the tcpdump tool (via the sudo command). Your account must also be able to
administer the computer in order for the sudo command to work for you.
5) Attempt to login with Messenger
6) Click on the Terminal window to activate it. Press and hold the control
key and press the c key - this will stop the network capture. You should
see a file named networkcapt.txt on your desktop; you should send this file
to rharriss@online.microsoft.com (removing the ³online² before sending).

Well, I've tried installing every messenger to my Mac Os X, and none seem to work. NONE. The closest one to working is Microsoft Messenger, and it absolutely will NOT let me sign in. I've tried it constantly, and nothing works. I simply don't know what to do! Please help!

Do you have any extended characters in your password? If so, can you change
to an all lowercase alphabet based password and see if that works?
Another user also pointed out issues with a particular version of the
firmware on Netgear routers causing problems in a post on 5/27 that may be
of interest if you are running a Netgear router.
Also, please see the post on 5/19 and 5/23 where I suggest specific
troubleshooting regarding signing into the personal service.
If you are unable to sign-in, after trying the various things, I need to get
logs in order to help troubleshoot the problem as described in the posts
above.
Thanks,
Rebecca

Hi,
Another user also pointed out issues with a particular version of the
firmware on Netgear routers causing problems in a post on 5/27 that may be
of interest if you are running a Netgear router.
Please let us know if reverting the firmware version resolved your sign-in
issue.
Thanks,
Rebecca

This I believe is for windows software so may apply to macs, but is a very
common problem. I suggest you read article before trying.

a completely off the subject post but, i cant sign into messenger on my mac without it saying i have to go through the setup each time. i dont know why because i downloaded it like it said. how can i get it to just sign in properley?
Not sure if you guys connect to the internet using Airport with a router but I had the same problem. I cured it by resetting the router to a static channel instead of allowing it to use the default "auto" channel setting. To do this you will need to go back through the router install procedure and when you get the channel setting prompt choose one of the alternatives such as channel 1 or 2 etc. For anyone not using a router...Sorry can't help.
