It’s been a month now since the worldwide launch of Office 2008 for Mac began at Macworld in January, and the team has been visibly pumped up about having Office 2008 out in the hands of customers and seeing the reactions. Post-launch, we’re hard at work monitoring issues in the wild and combing through customer feedback from Mactopia, newsgroups, etc. As with any software release, our commitment is to continuous improvement, and we are currently finishing up the first Office 2008 update, 12.0.1, which contains fixes for high-priority issues we’ve identified. We’re targeting a March 11th, 2008 release date, which will automatically be available via Microsoft Auto Update, and as a download from Mactopia at: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx.
The team is mobilized to get Office 2008 updates out as soon as possible; as a result we are pushing back the release of the final Open XML File Format Converter Update to Office 2004 for Mac. The final converter was previously scheduled for delivery 6-8 weeks after U.S. availability of Office 2008; instead, the final converter will be available to customers by late June 2008 as a download from Mactopia and also via Microsoft AutoUpdate. Of course, the stand-alone beta file format converter is still available for download here.
Quick updates on other upcoming releases:
• Availability of Office 2008 Volume Licensing – English, French, and Japanese versions became available on February 1st; all other supported languages will be available on March 1st.
• Remote Desktop Connection for Mac version 2.0 – the final release is scheduled for spring. The public beta version is available for download here.
• Messenger for Mac 7.0 (discussed in this post) – As mentioned previously, Messenger for Mac 7.0 is currently in beta with corporate customers; we expect to roll out the next version to everyone later this year.

I hate to be negative here. To prove that I should say I love to give positive feedback, but I can't, given the announcements in this post. OpenXML File Format Converter will be released, what, more than a year late now?
It seems like just yesterday we were all being so assured that the conversion of Office docs to XML format would be seamless and painless, that converters would be available and we had nothing to fear. It's a good thing Office 2007 on Windows is so slow to catch on because we'd be in real trouble if we actually had XML docs to convert. Still, the change will come, and with Office 2008 released it's going to be sooner than later.
So, is this a ploy to get people to upgrade or is it really so hard to write a converter for software you created yourself? Apple already has Office XML converters built into iWork '08 and that was last August, and DataViz had its translators finished last year as well. For Microsoft to not have these out on the day of Office 2007's release is simply ridiculous. It's been 13 months. Then the delay of the converter was announced, and now it's delayed again until 18 months after Office 2007's release.
I've said it before. We want to love you but you give us all kinds of reasons to doubt and mistrust and to ultimately leave you. These kinds of gaffes are big holes in your bucket and while you have all kinds of water to lose out of a freaking huge bucket, you're going to have to start caring a little more about doing a complete job at some point.
I don't want to rag about one little converter but it is a direct indicator of the bigger problem here which we have discussed before. You can't just drag this sack out in front of us and stand glowing next to it and expect us to continue to pay money for what's in it when the things we have been asking for are not there.
Are the converters free? Yes. Are they for software that is now outdated? Yes. I understand why this might seem to be a lower priority for you. But do you see why your credibility is in question here and why that is so important?
I won't mention the schedules for RDC 2 or Messenger 7 either.
One kudos for you - thanks for the 11.4.0 update for Office 2004 and the Entourage fixes. Haven't seen if they work but not forgetting about them in that app is much appreciated.

What I'd Love to See
Here are my thoughts for Entourage...
1 - Add the ability to link text when composing emails. You know, when I say click here and I'd like to put a link on that. This is really bugging me.
2 - Ability to export my calendar as an .ics file. Or fix the iCal sync issues. I find myself always having to clarify which event is right, the iCal one or the Entourage one. Then I end up loosing half of them.
3 - Allow me to delete some of the 'auto complete' email address that show up when composing a message. I don't need most of them.
4 - When hitting reply, always quote the entire original message no matter if I have some text selected or not.
5 - Grammar check?
For Excel, my only issue is that Excel and Quicksliver cause conflicts until one or both crash. Maybe that's a Quicksliver issue though.
For Word, the only thing I've found is that I can't copy text from Word into Dreamweaver MX 2004. Not sure why either. Copying from Entourage it works fine.
My day is cool, but I'd rather have it as a true Dashboard widget or have it appear when clicking on the toolbar icon and not having to select it from the menu. Like how the dock icon works. Maybe use this toolbar icon for upcoming meeting counts too.
Notebook is pretty sweet. I don't use it half as much as I should. Would love it if when I put in a checkbox, that when I hit return, it created another checkbox automatically for me.
Those are my thoughts. Overall it's pretty nice. Course my previous version was Office X (not 2004).

Cut and Past from Word 2008 to Adobe Dreamweaver
As a web designer, one of the main functions I use daily is to take text from clients who send it by Word. Word 2004 would allow me to cut and past and keep formatting. Word 2008 will now allow me to cut and past to Adobe Dreamweaver? Is there a fix? Right now I cut and past the text out of Word 2008 to TextEditor program then into Dreamweaver. If there is no fix, then I will have to go back to Word 2004.

Sync with Palm and Entourage
I like the new Off2008 for its speed, cleanliness of the UI, consistency with the past (no learning curve) but the biggest flaw, which has moved me away from the product is sync with my Palm and Ent08. By not including a conduit and using sync services, we've gone back in time by 10 plus years. Sync services just doesn't work. I've spent hours trying to keep it running but it just constantly breaks. Tech support is aware of this problem as one of the most pertinent. A conduit is definitely the answer. In 2004 it was fast , reliable and stable. Sync services in Ent08 is none of these things. It has to be fixed ASAP. Everything has/is going mobile. I never take my Macbook Pro with me anywhere but rather my WIFI Palm TX and my GSM Treo 680. I use/used Entourage for years to massage and manage my data - something that is very difficult to do in iCal and Addressbook. But with sync not running, there is little choice but to use these apps (I just can't expend time on something that won't run for myself and tons of other users). Please fix this as it is so critical.

Bought Excel2008 and had to go back to 2004
I'm new to Mac, and having a hard time with my transition.
On top of that, my debut with Office was not good. I found to bugs and had to get an Office 2004 in order to get my work done.
1. In Excel there is no option for pointing to the range for "x" axis in the graph menu.
2. In Entourage there is no Sync module for PocketMac for Blackberry, even though 2004 has it.
I would very much appreciate any hint on when will these issues be solved in order to start working with Office2008.

Entourage Import
I have been trying to import my 2004 identity into 2008. In the import window, I get the following message.
"The following Entourage 2004 identities were found in: /Users/art/Documents/Microsoft User Data. Select the identity you want to import."
and in the box to select the identity, I get this message.
"No Entourage 2004 identities found"
I then try to point to my identity and it still won't recognize it.
Anyone else experience this?

VBA Not Negotiable
Really, I shouldn't complain because I got my copy of Office 2008 free at MacWorld. I should just say thanks. But after five weeks I've reverted all my apps to Office X.
Only after I had installed 2008 and received an Excel workbook from a client did I discover this new, slower Excel did not support VBA macros.
I don't even like VBA, but until VBA is discontinued in Windows apps (is that coming in the next upgrade?) it continues to be non-negotiable in the world that Bill made.

Propose New Time
Thusfar I'm liking Entourage 2008 pretty well, and it integrates fairly well with the Exchange servers here at my office. One BIG complaint/question...why is the 'Propose New Time' option not available for responding to invites?
Right now, it's frustrating to have to manually email back to Windows-based Outlook meeting organizers, "Could you please move this meeting?"

Update causes problems with Word tab navigation
after update I am experiencing tab navigation issues (won't recognize the click on a second or third tab). This is only (obviously) in notebook layout view and can be restored by clicking in the document, scrolling and then clicking on another tab.

Why is it so difficult?
Recently updated from 2004 to 2008. For the first few days, I was happy. Word ran faster, the new menu structure/features are better, etc. But now, I've soured. Several reasons: 1. equations render poorly, or not at all, depending on their source 2. docx files opened with anything other than the mac version of 2008 have words randomly fused together (example "if the" becomes "ifthe") 3. no VBA means I can no longer use endnote (which is a huge pain in the rear and probably the dealbreaker that will send me back or to another program) 4. text renders over itself when scrolling through document 5. etc.
I don't understand this. Updating should make software better, not worse. I don't mind a little learning curve to figure out where commands are, but why should I pay to have a lot of the functionality that I depend on to do my work break? I have used MS office for years, on Mac and windows, and with each release it seems like I spend more and more time fighting the program to do what I want (and I don't want to do anything complicated). It has gotten to the point that the only reason I stick with it is because I need the compatibility, but with open document formats that is changing.
I want this product to work well, but it simply does not. Superficial elements get better with time, but the core functionality suffers. I don't understand why this is.

Microsoft Office 2008 and Leopard Graphics Update
When I installed Leopard Graphics Update Excel starting to freeze my entire computer. I had to re-boot every time I used Excel. At the end I had to restore from Time Machine my system from before Leopard Graphics Update was installed.
Does anyone know if Microsoft already fixed or will fix compatibility with Leopard Graphics Update

Why is Office for Mac Still a Second Class Citizen?
It's nice to have a native Mac version of Office, but the apps, particularly Entourage are horrible in comparison to Office 2007 for Windows. There are nice additions like Projects, but half of what you can do in Outlook can't be done in Entourage. From stupid stuff like being able to display multiple time zones and remembering location details from previous meeting invites to poor integration with Exchange and Blackberry synchronization. Is it just that you want to build an inferior product to make people want to abandon the Mac and return to a Windows PC? Why the apps can't be comparable is beyond me.

Combined Updates?
Is there a plan to create combined updates each time for Office 2008? That would definitely help in image maintenance for enterprise users since we could just add the new combined update to the "auto install stack" and not have to create an entirely new image each time.
Also - when can we expect to see a combined update for Office 2004 - we are on 11.4.0 now - and the last combined update was 11.3.5! THATS REALLY ANNOYING.

I tried using Office 2008 for a couple of weeks and had to go back to Office 2004. I'm a presentation designer, and this version of powerpoint as delivered was not usable. I could not get charts to display transparent backgrounds, only white or colors. The 2 formatting tools that are essential do not work: the pick up object style and apply to defaults (poor, and confusing name choices btw)
Odd line spacing behaviors in text boxes, tabbing in dialog boxes not working as expected, visual feedback while using animation was better in previous version.

I've got half a mind to cancel the upgrade due at my office next week. I work in a large mixed-platform environment (not far from Microsoft's Bay Area offices). When you (Microsoft) dropped the ball on Office XML converters, I bought iWork as a stopgap, as didi many of my coworkers.
Funny thing is, I don't miss much of the bloatware that is Office. And iWork reads and converts Office docs much better than your "free", late converter. The more we talk about it, the less we feel that having Office 2008 is a necessity. iWork 08 was cheaper and does virtually all we need it to do. While we'll probably upgrade to Office 08 anyway, I'm sorely disappointed in Microsoft's development priorities and resource allocation to the MBU.

Two suggestions of MacOffice Team
1. finish the Office 2004 docx converter ASAP (BTW why does it produce a RTF file instead of a doc file) because our business customers are stuck with Office 2004 due to Office 2008 lack of VBA support
2. why can't you repackage the VBA engine that ships with Office 2004 as a downloadable add-on to Office 2008, I believe that bridging the two worlds is possible without months of development.
Office 2008 will be a great product but it is unfinished at the moment.

BUG: White on Blue
Please fix the black cursor in white-on-blue mode. Also, non-printable characters stay black. Neither the cursor nor the non-printable characters are visible in that mode, making it rather useless as it is at the moment. They need to switch to white too, as in any other version of Office.

Does anyone else find it highly annoying that there is a free floating formula bar (which logically belongs to one spreadsheet window) that one cannot permanently anchor in the window and that has to sit either between the mac menu bar or entirely below the window?
If you produce MAC software - at least think it through to the standard expected of MAC software!
This is really the most #$%#%#@%#$%#^ I've seen ... I had really hoped that the UI design gets cleaned up logically and workflow wise, not just prettied up.
Furthermore, why are all really important shortcuts that a heavy Excel user needs all the time not mapped (e.g. Paste Special) Hello? Are you guys actually using your product or is it just meant to be pretty (if I want that I'll use numbers which will wins hands down on the stun factor).

Please ensure that this update includes custom error bars in excel. This is the only Excel that has shipped without this feature. What is the point of a fantastic new charting engine if it is impossible to do a scientific chart.

whither motion path animation?
I'm very disappointed that motion path animation never made it into Office 2008 - for me, this was the must have feature, and it's been in Windows Office for 5 years. Instead, we have an awful non-mac like interface, which presumably took a huge amount of engineering. Why don't you ask people what they want, instead of presuming to know what we want?

The Launch times of any of the Office 2008 applications under Tiger is painfully slow. I have read posts on the hoops folks are jumping through in attempts to fix this. None of them have worked for me. It may be due to the use of a font management utility. A lot of Mac creative users are using Font management applications. Maybe MS can work with Extensis and others so Office will work better with these font management applications. Fonts are a big part of daily life for creatives on Macs. Thanks.

I'm still waiting for my copy of 2008, which is still "In Process," according to the website...as it has been for some time.
In the meantime, I'm doing fine with Numbers and Pages, asking myself why I even bothered with the upgrade. I will say this: this is the last chance I will give to the current way Office Mac is done. Don't expect to pry anything else out of my wallet until full support for Exchange Tasks, Notes, Mail, Contacts, and preferably in a non-monolithic data structure. Apple Mail works great with an Exchange account I set up, but no Exchange Tasks, of course. But that makes it no different from Entourage!

Mac Office needs to get released to the Home Use Program
The staff over at the home use program have no idea when Mac Office 2008 will be able via that program. Right now, no Mac Office version of the software is avaiable via the Home Use Program. Last week they removed the Office 2004 and old Office v.X links. So whats the story? When will Office 2008 be released through the Home Use Program?

Office 2008 is a very bad piece of software
Well I have tried Office 2008 and find it to be a very bad piece of software from a company that produces some very good products. My only conclusion from this is Office 2008 is going to be the last version of the office suite for the Macintosh. The reason being that people are not going to pay the kind of money they are asking for bad software so Microsoft will kill it off. There position will be you can buy a copy of windows and run office for windows in a virtual environment. what a shame.

Scroll wheel problem
With the installation of Entourage 2008 HTML message pane the Logitech MX Revolution scroll wheel no longer works. It does work in all of the other panes and in the preview pane with text only. Would you please fix.
I would ask Logitech but the mouse only fails to work in this one application with only the above condition.

Huge Stability Issues in Office 2008
Since upgrading to Office 2008 from Office 2004 I have experienced non-stop stability issues.
Every time I attempt to cut and paste from Excel to any other non-office app it crashes Excel.
Work crashes periodically for no apparent reason what so ever.
I really hope the patch addresses these issues or I am going to have to go back to Office 2004.

OCR and hyperlinks
I am wondering whether Mac Office 2008 has MODI in it like the Windows version. I like the convenience of just performing OCR on selected text in an image file e.g. TIF - not a whole document - and then copying the OCRed text to a word document. Some of the TIF documents I get at 200 pages or more. I only wnat to convert little bits; not the whole lot. Can I do that?
Further, do hyperlinks work the same? Can I move a word document with hyperlinks from my Macbook Pro to a Windows machine and expect the liniks to work? Will it work going from a Windows to a mac machine?

I just hope it fixes the launch times as well!
Right now I'm looking at about 3.5 minutes of launching before any 2008 program is available for normal use. It shows up quickly, but you can't use it until it completely loads, slowing down my entire system until complete. Once it is finished loading, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are nice and fast.
Another fix that would be nice is the paragraph formating, since when is that kind of a gap between sentences? It should come formatted at 0 instead of the 12 I think it is set at.
It should also come preset to only save as .DOC and you should have to actively find the option to save as .DOCX since nothing really works under that right now. I don't know of too many corporations that are actively pursing ANY new Microsoft software for fear of it killing their current setup... I don't blame them, it sure is rough around the edges!
I SURE HOPE 12.0.1 FIXES EVERYTHING!!! FINGERS CROSSED HERE!!!!

Limitation of excel 2008 for making figures
For making figures in excel 2008, custom error bars is not included. Further, the horizontal axis in the excel can not be changed manually. These issues must be the big problem for the (medical )scientists in all fields, We believe you will fix them in the next upgrade.

For Excel, my only issue is that Excel and Quicksliver cause conflicts until one or both crash. Maybe that's a Quicksliver issue though.
For Word, the only thing I've found is that I can't copy text from Word into Dreamweaver MX 2004. Not sure why either. Copying from Entourage it works fine.
My day is cool, but I'd rather have it as a true Dashboard widget or have it appear when clicking on the toolbar icon and not having to select it from the menu. Like how the dock icon works. Maybe use this toolbar icon for upcoming meeting counts too.
Notebook is pretty sweet. I don't use it half as much as I should. Would love it if when I put in a checkbox, that when I hit return, it created another checkbox automatically for me.
Those are my thoughts. Overall it's pretty nice. Course my previous version was Office X (not 2004).

Bought Excel2008 and had to go back to 2004
On top of that, my debut with Office was not good. I found to bugs and had to get an Office 2004 in order to get my work done.
1. In Excel there is no option for pointing to the range for "x" axis in the graph menu.
2. In Entourage there is no Sync module for PocketMac for Blackberry, even though 2004 has it.
I would very much appreciate any hint on when will these issues be solved in order to start working with Office2008.

Entourage Import
"The following Entourage 2004 identities were found in: /Users/art/Documents/Microsoft User Data. Select the identity you want to import."
and in the box to select the identity, I get this message.
"No Entourage 2004 identities found"
I then try to point to my identity and it still won't recognize it.
Anyone else experience this?

VBA Not Negotiable
Only after I had installed 2008 and received an Excel workbook from a client did I discover this new, slower Excel did not support VBA macros.
I don't even like VBA, but until VBA is discontinued in Windows apps (is that coming in the next upgrade?) it continues to be non-negotiable in the world that Bill made.

Why is it so difficult?
I don't understand this. Updating should make software better, not worse. I don't mind a little learning curve to figure out where commands are, but why should I pay to have a lot of the functionality that I depend on to do my work break? I have used MS office for years, on Mac and windows, and with each release it seems like I spend more and more time fighting the program to do what I want (and I don't want to do anything complicated). It has gotten to the point that the only reason I stick with it is because I need the compatibility, but with open document formats that is changing.
I want this product to work well, but it simply does not. Superficial elements get better with time, but the core functionality suffers. I don't understand why this is.

You gotta be kidding me - late June? That's a FIVE month slip!
Funny thing is, I don't miss much of the bloatware that is Office. And iWork reads and converts Office docs much better than your "free", late converter. The more we talk about it, the less we feel that having Office 2008 is a necessity. iWork 08 was cheaper and does virtually all we need it to do. While we'll probably upgrade to Office 08 anyway, I'm sorely disappointed in Microsoft's development priorities and resource allocation to the MBU.

Two suggestions of MacOffice Team
2. why can't you repackage the VBA engine that ships with Office 2004 as a downloadable add-on to Office 2008, I believe that bridging the two worlds is possible without months of development.
Office 2008 will be a great product but it is unfinished at the moment.

Does anyone else find it highly annoying that there is a free floating formula bar (which logically belongs to one spreadsheet window) that one cannot permanently anchor in the window and that has to sit either between the mac menu bar or entirely below the window?
If you produce MAC software - at least think it through to the standard expected of MAC software!
This is really the most #$%#%#@%#$%#^ I've seen ... I had really hoped that the UI design gets cleaned up logically and workflow wise, not just prettied up.
Furthermore, why are all really important shortcuts that a heavy Excel user needs all the time not mapped (e.g. Paste Special) Hello? Are you guys actually using your product or is it just meant to be pretty (if I want that I'll use numbers which will wins hands down on the stun factor).

In the meantime, I'm doing fine with Numbers and Pages, asking myself why I even bothered with the upgrade. I will say this: this is the last chance I will give to the current way Office Mac is done. Don't expect to pry anything else out of my wallet until full support for Exchange Tasks, Notes, Mail, Contacts, and preferably in a non-monolithic data structure. Apple Mail works great with an Exchange account I set up, but no Exchange Tasks, of course. But that makes it no different from Entourage!

Huge Stability Issues in Office 2008
Every time I attempt to cut and paste from Excel to any other non-office app it crashes Excel.
Work crashes periodically for no apparent reason what so ever.
I really hope the patch addresses these issues or I am going to have to go back to Office 2004.

Right now I'm looking at about 3.5 minutes of launching before any 2008 program is available for normal use. It shows up quickly, but you can't use it until it completely loads, slowing down my entire system until complete. Once it is finished loading, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are nice and fast.
Another fix that would be nice is the paragraph formating, since when is that kind of a gap between sentences? It should come formatted at 0 instead of the 12 I think it is set at.
It should also come preset to only save as .DOC and you should have to actively find the option to save as .DOCX since nothing really works under that right now. I don't know of too many corporations that are actively pursing ANY new Microsoft software for fear of it killing their current setup... I don't blame them, it sure is rough around the edges!
I SURE HOPE 12.0.1 FIXES EVERYTHING!!! FINGERS CROSSED HERE!!!!
