It’s been a month now since the worldwide launch of Office 2008 for Mac began at Macworld in January, and the team has been visibly pumped up about having Office 2008 out in the hands of customers and seeing the reactions. Post-launch, we’re hard at work monitoring issues in the wild and combing through customer feedback from Mactopia, newsgroups, etc. As with any software release, our commitment is to continuous improvement, and we are currently finishing up the first Office 2008 update, 12.0.1, which contains fixes for high-priority issues we’ve identified. We’re targeting a March 11th, 2008 release date, which will automatically be available via Microsoft Auto Update, and as a download from Mactopia at: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx.
The team is mobilized to get Office 2008 updates out as soon as possible; as a result we are pushing back the release of the final Open XML File Format Converter Update to Office 2004 for Mac. The final converter was previously scheduled for delivery 6-8 weeks after U.S. availability of Office 2008; instead, the final converter will be available to customers by late June 2008 as a download from Mactopia and also via Microsoft AutoUpdate. Of course, the stand-alone beta file format converter is still available for download here.
Quick updates on other upcoming releases:
• Availability of Office 2008 Volume Licensing – English, French, and Japanese versions became available on February 1st; all other supported languages will be available on March 1st.
• Remote Desktop Connection for Mac version 2.0 – the final release is scheduled for spring. The public beta version is available for download here.
• Messenger for Mac 7.0 (discussed in this post) – As mentioned previously, Messenger for Mac 7.0 is currently in beta with corporate customers; we expect to roll out the next version to everyone later this year.

I hate to be negative here. To prove that I should say I love to give positive feedback, but I can't, given the announcements in this post. OpenXML File Format Converter will be released, what, more than a year late now?
It seems like just yesterday we were all being so assured that the conversion of Office docs to XML format would be seamless and painless, that converters would be available and we had nothing to fear. It's a good thing Office 2007 on Windows is so slow to catch on because we'd be in real trouble if we actually had XML docs to convert. Still, the change will come, and with Office 2008 released it's going to be sooner than later.
So, is this a ploy to get people to upgrade or is it really so hard to write a converter for software you created yourself? Apple already has Office XML converters built into iWork '08 and that was last August, and DataViz had its translators finished last year as well. For Microsoft to not have these out on the day of Office 2007's release is simply ridiculous. It's been 13 months. Then the delay of the converter was announced, and now it's delayed again until 18 months after Office 2007's release.
I've said it before. We want to love you but you give us all kinds of reasons to doubt and mistrust and to ultimately leave you. These kinds of gaffes are big holes in your bucket and while you have all kinds of water to lose out of a freaking huge bucket, you're going to have to start caring a little more about doing a complete job at some point.
I don't want to rag about one little converter but it is a direct indicator of the bigger problem here which we have discussed before. You can't just drag this sack out in front of us and stand glowing next to it and expect us to continue to pay money for what's in it when the things we have been asking for are not there.
Are the converters free? Yes. Are they for software that is now outdated? Yes. I understand why this might seem to be a lower priority for you. But do you see why your credibility is in question here and why that is so important?
I won't mention the schedules for RDC 2 or Messenger 7 either.
One kudos for you - thanks for the 11.4.0 update for Office 2004 and the Entourage fixes. Haven't seen if they work but not forgetting about them in that app is much appreciated.

What I'd Love to See
Here are my thoughts for Entourage...
1 - Add the ability to link text when composing emails. You know, when I say click here and I'd like to put a link on that. This is really bugging me.
2 - Ability to export my calendar as an .ics file. Or fix the iCal sync issues. I find myself always having to clarify which event is right, the iCal one or the Entourage one. Then I end up loosing half of them.
3 - Allow me to delete some of the 'auto complete' email address that show up when composing a message. I don't need most of them.
4 - When hitting reply, always quote the entire original message no matter if I have some text selected or not.
5 - Grammar check?
For Excel, my only issue is that Excel and Quicksliver cause conflicts until one or both crash. Maybe that's a Quicksliver issue though.
For Word, the only thing I've found is that I can't copy text from Word into Dreamweaver MX 2004. Not sure why either. Copying from Entourage it works fine.
My day is cool, but I'd rather have it as a true Dashboard widget or have it appear when clicking on the toolbar icon and not having to select it from the menu. Like how the dock icon works. Maybe use this toolbar icon for upcoming meeting counts too.
Notebook is pretty sweet. I don't use it half as much as I should. Would love it if when I put in a checkbox, that when I hit return, it created another checkbox automatically for me.
Those are my thoughts. Overall it's pretty nice. Course my previous version was Office X (not 2004).

Cut and Past from Word 2008 to Adobe Dreamweaver
As a web designer, one of the main functions I use daily is to take text from clients who send it by Word. Word 2004 would allow me to cut and past and keep formatting. Word 2008 will now allow me to cut and past to Adobe Dreamweaver? Is there a fix? Right now I cut and past the text out of Word 2008 to TextEditor program then into Dreamweaver. If there is no fix, then I will have to go back to Word 2004.

Sync with Palm and Entourage
I like the new Off2008 for its speed, cleanliness of the UI, consistency with the past (no learning curve) but the biggest flaw, which has moved me away from the product is sync with my Palm and Ent08. By not including a conduit and using sync services, we've gone back in time by 10 plus years. Sync services just doesn't work. I've spent hours trying to keep it running but it just constantly breaks. Tech support is aware of this problem as one of the most pertinent. A conduit is definitely the answer. In 2004 it was fast , reliable and stable. Sync services in Ent08 is none of these things. It has to be fixed ASAP. Everything has/is going mobile. I never take my Macbook Pro with me anywhere but rather my WIFI Palm TX and my GSM Treo 680. I use/used Entourage for years to massage and manage my data - something that is very difficult to do in iCal and Addressbook. But with sync not running, there is little choice but to use these apps (I just can't expend time on something that won't run for myself and tons of other users). Please fix this as it is so critical.

Bought Excel2008 and had to go back to 2004
I'm new to Mac, and having a hard time with my transition.
On top of that, my debut with Office was not good. I found to bugs and had to get an Office 2004 in order to get my work done.
1. In Excel there is no option for pointing to the range for "x" axis in the graph menu.
2. In Entourage there is no Sync module for PocketMac for Blackberry, even though 2004 has it.
I would very much appreciate any hint on when will these issues be solved in order to start working with Office2008.

Entourage Import
I have been trying to import my 2004 identity into 2008. In the import window, I get the following message.
"The following Entourage 2004 identities were found in: /Users/art/Documents/Microsoft User Data. Select the identity you want to import."
and in the box to select the identity, I get this message.
"No Entourage 2004 identities found"
I then try to point to my identity and it still won't recognize it.
Anyone else experience this?

VBA Not Negotiable
Really, I shouldn't complain because I got my copy of Office 2008 free at MacWorld. I should just say thanks. But after five weeks I've reverted all my apps to Office X.
Only after I had installed 2008 and received an Excel workbook from a client did I discover this new, slower Excel did not support VBA macros.
I don't even like VBA, but until VBA is discontinued in Windows apps (is that coming in the next upgrade?) it continues to be non-negotiable in the world that Bill made.

Propose New Time
Thusfar I'm liking Entourage 2008 pretty well, and it integrates fairly well with the Exchange servers here at my office. One BIG complaint/question...why is the 'Propose New Time' option not available for responding to invites?
Right now, it's frustrating to have to manually email back to Windows-based Outlook meeting organizers, "Could you please move this meeting?"

Update causes problems with Word tab navigation
after update I am experiencing tab navigation issues (won't recognize the click on a second or third tab). This is only (obviously) in notebook layout view and can be restored by clicking in the document, scrolling and then clicking on another tab.

Why is it so difficult?
Recently updated from 2004 to 2008. For the first few days, I was happy. Word ran faster, the new menu structure/features are better, etc. But now, I've soured. Several reasons: 1. equations render poorly, or not at all, depending on their source 2. docx files opened with anything other than the mac version of 2008 have words randomly fused together (example "if the" becomes "ifthe") 3. no VBA means I can no longer use endnote (which is a huge pain in the rear and probably the dealbreaker that will send me back or to another program) 4. text renders over itself when scrolling through document 5. etc.
I don't understand this. Updating should make software better, not worse. I don't mind a little learning curve to figure out where commands are, but why should I pay to have a lot of the functionality that I depend on to do my work break? I have used MS office for years, on Mac and windows, and with each release it seems like I spend more and more time fighting the program to do what I want (and I don't want to do anything complicated). It has gotten to the point that the only reason I stick with it is because I need the compatibility, but with open document formats that is changing.
I want this product to work well, but it simply does not. Superficial elements get better with time, but the core functionality suffers. I don't understand why this is.

Microsoft Office 2008 and Leopard Graphics Update
When I installed Leopard Graphics Update Excel starting to freeze my entire computer. I had to re-boot every time I used Excel. At the end I had to restore from Time Machine my system from before Leopard Graphics Update was installed.
Does anyone know if Microsoft already fixed or will fix compatibility with Leopard Graphics Update

Why is Office for Mac Still a Second Class Citizen?
It's nice to have a native Mac version of Office, but the apps, particularly Entourage are horrible in comparison to Office 2007 for Windows. There are nice additions like Projects, but half of what you can do in Outlook can't be done in Entourage. From stupid stuff like being able to display multiple time zones and remembering location details from previous meeting invites to poor integration with Exchange and Blackberry synchronization. Is it just that you want to build an inferior product to make people want to abandon the Mac and return to a Windows PC? Why the apps can't be comparable is beyond me.

Combined Updates?
Is there a plan to create combined updates each time for Office 2008? That would definitely help in image maintenance for enterprise users since we could just add the new combined update to the "auto install stack" and not have to create an entirely new image each time.
Also - when can we expect to see a combined update for Office 2004 - we are on 11.4.0 now - and the last combined update was 11.3.5! THATS REALLY ANNOYING.

I tried using Office 2008 for a couple of weeks and had to go back to Office 2004. I'm a presentation designer, and this version of powerpoint as delivered was not usable. I could not get charts to display transparent backgrounds, only white or colors. The 2 formatting tools that are essential do not work: the pick up object style and apply to defaults (poor, and confusing name choices btw)
Odd line spacing behaviors in text boxes, tabbing in dialog boxes not working as expected, visual feedback while using animation was better in previous version.

I've got half a mind to cancel the upgrade due at my office next week. I work in a large mixed-platform environment (not far from Microsoft's Bay Area offices). When you (Microsoft) dropped the ball on Office XML converters, I bought iWork as a stopgap, as didi many of my coworkers.
Funny thing is, I don't miss much of the bloatware that is Office. And iWork reads and converts Office docs much better than your "free", late converter. The more we talk about it, the less we feel that having Office 2008 is a necessity. iWork 08 was cheaper and does virtually all we need it to do. While we'll probably upgrade to Office 08 anyway, I'm sorely disappointed in Microsoft's development priorities and resource allocation to the MBU.

Two suggestions of MacOffice Team
1. finish the Office 2004 docx converter ASAP (BTW why does it produce a RTF file instead of a doc file) because our business customers are stuck with Office 2004 due to Office 2008 lack of VBA support
2. why can't you repackage the VBA engine that ships with Office 2004 as a downloadable add-on to Office 2008, I believe that bridging the two worlds is possible without months of development.
Office 2008 will be a great product but it is unfinished at the moment.

BUG: White on Blue
Please fix the black cursor in white-on-blue mode. Also, non-printable characters stay black. Neither the cursor nor the non-printable characters are visible in that mode, making it rather useless as it is at the moment. They need to switch to white too, as in any other version of Office.

Does anyone else find it highly annoying that there is a free floating formula bar (which logically belongs to one spreadsheet window) that one cannot permanently anchor in the window and that has to sit either between the mac menu bar or entirely below the window?
If you produce MAC software - at least think it through to the standard expected of MAC software!
This is really the most #$%#%#@%#$%#^ I've seen ... I had really hoped that the UI design gets cleaned up logically and workflow wise, not just prettied up.
Furthermore, why are all really important shortcuts that a heavy Excel user needs all the time not mapped (e.g. Paste Special) Hello? Are you guys actually using your product or is it just meant to be pretty (if I want that I'll use numbers which will wins hands down on the stun factor).

I'm very disappointed that motion path animation never made it into Office 2008 - for me, this was the must have feature, and it's been in Windows Office for 5 years. Instead, we have an awful non-mac like interface, which presumably took a huge amount of engineering. Why don't you ask people what they want, instead of presuming to know what we want?

The Launch times of any of the Office 2008 applications under Tiger is painfully slow. I have read posts on the hoops folks are jumping through in attempts to fix this. None of them have worked for me. It may be due to the use of a font management utility. A lot of Mac creative users are using Font management applications. Maybe MS can work with Extensis and others so Office will work better with these font management applications. Fonts are a big part of daily life for creatives on Macs. Thanks.

I'm still waiting for my copy of 2008, which is still "In Process," according to the website...as it has been for some time.
In the meantime, I'm doing fine with Numbers and Pages, asking myself why I even bothered with the upgrade. I will say this: this is the last chance I will give to the current way Office Mac is done. Don't expect to pry anything else out of my wallet until full support for Exchange Tasks, Notes, Mail, Contacts, and preferably in a non-monolithic data structure. Apple Mail works great with an Exchange account I set up, but no Exchange Tasks, of course. But that makes it no different from Entourage!

The staff over at the home use program have no idea when Mac Office 2008 will be able via that program. Right now, no Mac Office version of the software is avaiable via the Home Use Program. Last week they removed the Office 2004 and old Office v.X links. So whats the story? When will Office 2008 be released through the Home Use Program?

Well I have tried Office 2008 and find it to be a very bad piece of software from a company that produces some very good products. My only conclusion from this is Office 2008 is going to be the last version of the office suite for the Macintosh. The reason being that people are not going to pay the kind of money they are asking for bad software so Microsoft will kill it off. There position will be you can buy a copy of windows and run office for windows in a virtual environment. what a shame.

Scroll wheel problem
With the installation of Entourage 2008 HTML message pane the Logitech MX Revolution scroll wheel no longer works. It does work in all of the other panes and in the preview pane with text only. Would you please fix.
I would ask Logitech but the mouse only fails to work in this one application with only the above condition.

Huge Stability Issues in Office 2008
Since upgrading to Office 2008 from Office 2004 I have experienced non-stop stability issues.
Every time I attempt to cut and paste from Excel to any other non-office app it crashes Excel.
Work crashes periodically for no apparent reason what so ever.
I really hope the patch addresses these issues or I am going to have to go back to Office 2004.

OCR and hyperlinks
I am wondering whether Mac Office 2008 has MODI in it like the Windows version. I like the convenience of just performing OCR on selected text in an image file e.g. TIF - not a whole document - and then copying the OCRed text to a word document. Some of the TIF documents I get at 200 pages or more. I only wnat to convert little bits; not the whole lot. Can I do that?
Further, do hyperlinks work the same? Can I move a word document with hyperlinks from my Macbook Pro to a Windows machine and expect the liniks to work? Will it work going from a Windows to a mac machine?

I just hope it fixes the launch times as well!
Right now I'm looking at about 3.5 minutes of launching before any 2008 program is available for normal use. It shows up quickly, but you can't use it until it completely loads, slowing down my entire system until complete. Once it is finished loading, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are nice and fast.
Another fix that would be nice is the paragraph formating, since when is that kind of a gap between sentences? It should come formatted at 0 instead of the 12 I think it is set at.
It should also come preset to only save as .DOC and you should have to actively find the option to save as .DOCX since nothing really works under that right now. I don't know of too many corporations that are actively pursing ANY new Microsoft software for fear of it killing their current setup... I don't blame them, it sure is rough around the edges!
I SURE HOPE 12.0.1 FIXES EVERYTHING!!! FINGERS CROSSED HERE!!!!

Limitation of excel 2008 for making figures
For making figures in excel 2008, custom error bars is not included. Further, the horizontal axis in the excel can not be changed manually. These issues must be the big problem for the (medical )scientists in all fields, We believe you will fix them in the next upgrade.

Performance
I'm an experienced user of Excel 2007 for WIndows, what used to be called a power user.
I installed Office 2008 on a brand new MacBook, and here is my experience:
it runs slower on the Mac than the PC, even though the Mac has a far more powerful CPU.
There are no keyboard shortcuts, unlike Excel 2007 for Windows, which is a very big negative and a time waster for a 'power' user.
Tasks like Sort are far slower on the Mac.
It crashed three times the first time I used it.
Granted, by mistake, we purchased the Student/Home edition. Could it be that the regular or professional version would solve all these problems?

I'm sorry but I had to put in a good word: I vastly prefer Office 2008 over its predecessor and Apple iWork. There probably remain a number of issues to tackle, sure, but posts like Gregory's here above have me shaking my head in wonder: are we talking about the same product?
Anyway, my (short) wish list: better startup times (I'm running OS X.5.2) and support for VB macros in Excel.

Home Use Program
The HUP support replied me "We have been informed that Office Mac 2008 has not been added as part of the Home Use Program. The product is however available through the Employee Purchase Program. Also Office for Mac 2004 has been removed from the Home Use Program as there are ongoing negotiations about whether or not Office Mac in general should be made available through the Home Use Program."
So, they pointed out a "Employee Purchase Program" I know nothing about... I am waiting for their answer about this program, but I think the HUP now will be Windows-only for Office.
With the removal of VBA in the Mac OS product (because it is to complex to port to the Intel processors now used in the Mac as I read elsewhere), I think I will stick with my old Office 2004.

Let me get this straight. You're going to further delay the file converters for the functional Office 2004 so that you can take another stab at getting Office 2008 right?
Look, we, your customers, need this stuff to work. We need it to do our work. And right now, the only version of Office that has the functionality we need is Office 2004. Office 2008, like iWork, is a beautiful, shiny toy. But the feature set is reduced. Fewer export formats. Fewer options, no VBA--it's just not usable in an enterprise environment. Office 2004 may be "ugly", but it does what we need--with the exception of opening Office 2007 files.
Unless your bugfixes for Office 2008 include "Re-enabling legacy export formats" and "re-implementing VBA", please give your customers what they need to do their jobs before patching up your white elephant.

How about Quick View?
Leopard has a Quick View that can readily display Office 2004 files, but cannot display Office 2008 files. When will we get an update that allows Office users to take advantage of this excellent Leopard feature?

Speed - Quick Look
Yes, the lack of launching speed is a KNOWN issue... Microsoft will admit to it when you call them... They said they are working on it! I sure hope this update fixes it. Apple reports the same known issue with Office 2008 and are providing Microsoft assistance in fixing it.
Quick Look is working just fine for me... Especially when saving as a .DOC file. I refuse to use .DOCX because it doesn't work with much yet...

Dreamweaver fixes
As this is not a Microsoft product, Microsoft can't fix it. I can paste from Office into lots of other applications just fine. It sounds like a Dreamweaver problem. It is 2008 - use style sheets instead.

The update needs to really fix things
Like many who have posted comments, I too find Office 08 to be a disappointment. I use Entourage extensively. From little things -- like not remembering a secondary window settings -- to crashes when opening a fancy doc created in Apple Mail, this release should've been tested more fully before being released.
The lack of a true Palm conduit is a shame.
I hope the Mac team is truly feeling our pain, and that next release will fix our problems.

Great Visual Interface but Excel kinda lacks its pre-existing guts
I really enjoy using office for the many school activities I must do on a daily basis...But...When it came to my Business Stats class I encountered what I find to be a rather extreme problem. Most of this course is based around using the Solver tool, a common add-in in all prior versions I've used. but not here. It really sucks not being able to get the full usage out of what would otherwise be an awesome office suite, and having to use school computers for every assignment I have which always include using the solver tool really defeats the purpose of me even having a laptop in the first place... I really hope an update can fix this problem.

Excel 2008 and VBA
Put it back. Put is back right now. You won't get my money until you give us back what we had in Excel Office 2004. In fact, give us all the VBA back and functioning (finally) like the Windows Office version (help with completion, etc.). You went the other way and stripped it out! Don't you have talented programmers. In fact, aren't you programmers suppose to be the best in the world at writing Office for the Mac?? Why the HUGE disappointement?

Serious bug with ChemDraw graphics
From the Cambridgesoft website
"Microsoft removed the ability to retrieve the original chemical data in pictures pasted into Microsoft Word when they released Microsoft Office 2008 (if you copy and paste a structure in Word 2008, for example, into ChemDraw, you can't edit it). We clearly do not support this decision, but we have little influence over Microsoft's development activities. If you preferred the old behavior in Microsoft Word, we strongly recommend that you contact Microsoft and tell them that. Until/unless they restore this feature in a future version of Microsoft Word, you will need to save the ChemDraw files as separate documents. Of course, if you continue to use an older version of Microsoft Word that has this feature, you can continue to use it as you always have."

Entourage 2008 - No sounds
One bug to fix with the first update is definitely the "no sounds" issue in Entourage 2008. It's extremely user-unfriendly to use Entourage without hearing any action. Please do that right!

Yup... Usually, an upgrade is not a downgrade. Microsoft has suceeded to make one of their best programs completely useless. I can´t really see how it´s possible to leave out the Analysis ToolPack, and I couldn´t dream of such a joke when I purchased the update!
Please bring back the ATP ASAP!

New to Mac - Multiple address books in Entourage
I just converted from Windows to imac. In Outlook I had 5 address books. How can I duplicate those in Entourage? Having all contacts in one and using Groups does not do the same thing, in my opinion. Is there a way to do this or does anyone have a work around?

I started a new job last week with a new Mac Pro. Office 2008 is terrible. It's pretty much unusable. Right now I'm trying to create a powerpoint, but as I type the spinning wheel appears everyother word, I can't create graphs with 2axis, I can't copy graphs from excel to powerpoint - I'm totally stuck. This product is so so bad I want something else and I want someone to ship it to me now.

We need the update to Office 2008!
Please deliver the update to Office 2008 as soon as you can. Large worksheets in Excel are virtually unusable (a 2Mb worksheet will take several minutes to open), switching from the Inbox to Calendar in Entourage takes more than 60 seconds, formatting in Excel graphics sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, etc., etc., etc.
I realize that developing an offering like Office is a major undertaking and that your team is trying to produce a quality product. However, Office 2008 is a very poor offering and should not have been released in its current form.

Entourage Sound Set
Office 2008 does not have an option for the Microsoft Sound Set that I used in Office 2004. Therefore normal sounds for Sent and Received Mail are not being played at all in the Default Sound Set. Where can I add the Microsoft Sound Set?

Entourage 2008 Problem
Ever since I installed Office 2008 and replaced 2004, my calender has stopped syncing with my iPhone. After many hours of research and a visit to Apple's Discussion Board, I now know that I am not alone. High number of users are experiencing this problem and the census is that Entourage and Microsoft SyncServer is the problem. I truly hope the Office Update due on March 15, 2008 fixes this major problem or that an interm fix is on its way.

I would like to make a suggestion regarding the powerpoint 2008, I'm a big fan of animation, when I create slides I sometimes put animation, but the new version of office (2008) seems to me , it lacks the abilities to put the motion path animation. As a result, I do hope the macBU would consider to add this feature back (b/c the motion path animation was supported on 2004 version), maybe include it to the upcoming update?

No VBA, No Analysis Tool Pack, No Solver, and No Goal Seek
Mr. Price seems so proud of the "worldwide launch of Office 2008," however, I can not understand why he is so proud. Office 2008 is a hollowed out shell of an application program that has lost a significant amount of its usefulness and functionality.
If this is something of which to be proud, then of course Mr. Price and his team have something to be “visibly pumped up” about. That is provided you like having your purchasers felling more like victims rather than valued customers.
Yes, Mr. Price. Be proud and continue to “mobilize” the team to get Office 2008 updates out as soon as possible, but please, with all of your boasting aside, insure that those updates contain the Analysis Tool Pack, Solver, and Goal Seek, please.

Entourage Feedback
I'm sure you've been reading all the threads but I felt the need to chime in here. Four MAJOR practical problems with Office '08 Entourage...
1) Notification sounds don't work. (I know you're aware of this already)
2) Choosing to edit a previously sent email no longer lets you alter the subject line, just the message body
3) From the sent items list, there is no "resend" option any longer
4) You can no longer open the address list in a new window.
Perhaps these are being worked on. Perhaps there are already ways to do these things that I am unaware of because of the upgrade. But nonetheless, I'm surprised these significant inconsistencies still remain despite months of beta testing.

paste as picture
I often copy a block of cells (a table, if you will) in Excel and paste it into Word as a picture. This is because formatting tables in Word is a nightmare no matter the platform or version -- but that's not my issue here.
Now with 2008 if I "paste as picture" the hidden gridlines come over from Excel, and the "picture" is very, very pixelated. It's like looking at an overly blown-up screenshot of Excel. This function worked just fine in 2004, why the step backward?

Auto Update puts itself into the trash
My AutoUpdate program told me I needed to update the updater. I ran the install and all seemed fine. Since I get MyDay recovered files in my trash every day since installing Office 2008 I went there to look at and clean some out. While looking I noticed a copy of Auto Update in the trash. I assumed it was the older version but upon examination I saw that it was version 2.1.0. I thought this odd so I went to see what version was in my applications folder only to find a Power PC Version 1.1.2 there. I tried launching first the older one and then the newer version. Both worked and both told me I needed to update to Version 2.1.1. Each time I ran either updater it placed the newer version 2.1.1 into my trash and kept the older version in the apps folder. Finally I just placed the newer version into the apps folder and it seems to be working ok now. To say the least this is odd behavior. The updater seems to do the opposite of what it was intended to perform. Hey Microsoft please take notice and fix this bug....

1. All these new applications seem slow to start.
2. The customise toolbar function doesn't seem to allow me to get rid of the new elements gallery toolbar at the top of each document. This is very annoying waste of screen space for a function that I might use a couple of times each year.
3. Excel does not seem to remember the format of data in a column. Every time I open a sheet and enter a date in a 'date column', it is formatted as something completely different. Have to go back and reformat the cells every time. Annoying.
Thinking very seriously about retreating the Office 2004.
Sort it out Microsoft.

Entourage 2008 inline pdf viewing
Hi,
With Entourage 2008,I can no longer see pdf attachments directly in my email. I have to open the attachments to see them. I was able to see them fine in Entourage 2004-and, since I moved my identity to Entourage 2008, I know the same emails no longer show the PDFs.
I have one client with Entourage 2008, and she can see her pdf files. I have another client with entourage 2008 and she sees her pdfs all blurry. In all cases we can all open our pdfs and they are fine. the issues are clearly entourage.
Will this be fixed?

Sync services fix is so critical
Unfortunately due to the constant errors that Entourage creates when using sync services I've had to switch to iCal and Addressbook in the interim until this is resolved. There were just too many bizzare things happening when using Entourage sync services with my Palm and iCal. I really miss though the power of Entourage which in no way can be replicated in the Apple apps.
Mobility is so critical to the way I've worked for a long time and Entourage sync services is just plain broken so its not possible to use. However, I used Outlook from 1997 to 2003 and Entourage to this day and I had a very effective way of working. I'm now greatly impacted by not being able to use Entourage.
In the discussion forums, this is one of the most hotly discussed topics and users and anxiously waiting for a fix. I hope Microsoft addresses this as soon as possible (maybe even in the upcoming upgrage).

Will the update fix the SLOWness?
I'm thisclose to trying iWork, because Office 2008 runs so very slow on my new MBP. I type something in Excel or Word and I watch the cursor spin for 30-45 seconds before it does anything. I move a window into the center of my screen and it freezes for 30 seconds before it moves. I really heavily on these programs for my business, and simply do not have the time to wait for them to load or to actually do what I've typed into the keyboard. So please, please tell me the 3/11 update will help remedy these delays.

Please fix the following:
- window orders gets all messy. finder window stays on top of office windows and sometimes office windows dont move to the front when clicked. it takes a few minutes of working with office, spaces and expose to find this bug.
- html e-mail. this is just lazy dev work. this product should not have shipped without html e-mail authoring.
- excel data filters. in office 2007 you can select all values or use a tick-box to select multiple values in its data filters in excel 08 its nothing, one or all, but no "multi-select" this really really sucks.
- excel heat maps. when you use a heat map in excel 2007, save the doc and try to open it in 08 you get a "feature not supported" read only message. there are a number of these. thats not true compatibility...
- excel cannot scale with large data sheets. it crashes when you try to do data work with large sheets.
- expand and collapse sections is not compatible with office 2007. office 2008 does not have the same expand/collapse support of sections as office 2007 which causes unreadable sheets when you use multi-layer pivot tables and try to expand and collapse sections.
- toolbar and menu-bar consistency between apps. it really looks like the 4 apps were developed by different teams. the windows, toolbars and menus all behave in different ways... why is this?
- import and export to pst? come on. we had at least import for office 2004. many of us have data in pst files and we need to get to it please.
- please make it easier to work with animations in ppt. i takes forever to add an animation on a complex slide. its not easy to cancel the auto-animation play when you add a new effect.
can duplicate all of these for you in 15 minutes on a livemeeting. let me know if you need help to find your bugs.
we use the software in the real world every day.

ELEMENTS BAR SHOULD BE OPTIONAL!
I REALLY don't want to see the "Document Elements", "Quick Tables", "Charts", "SmartArt Graphics" and "Wordart" buttons in my WORD 2008 main toolbar.
Why in the world would they be non-optional?!?!?! Please give me the option to remove them!

You Don't Need it
I was an avid 2004 user and it worked well. Upgraded to 2008 and, as the blogs and forums show, it does not work well, especially Entourage. So, I had already deleted 2004 and then decided to remove 2008 because I was getting so frustrated with the issues it has. Here is what I found out after 3 weeks without Office on my computer-- with iWork 08 and iLife 08, you just don't need Office! They all work flawlessly! My life has been so much less frustrating since I removed Office from my computer! So, my advice - just say goodbye to Microsoft!

Here are two 'buggy' areas:
(1) Entourage dumps pretty often -- and yes, I've been reporting them to Microsoft. I'm integrating it with Microsoft Exchange Server
(2) Microsoft Office 2008 and Leopard Spaces don't play well together at all! Try it: use Spaces and have Excel open in one space and Entourage in another. Open an attachment in Entourage. The only way I can find where it was opened is by hitting F8 and F9. Then, frequently the attachment is at the bottom of the window stack!
And an enhancement request:

Cash Flow Sheet
I am really new to the Office 2008 for Mac. Several years ago I was using an excel program that had a ready made template. I do not remember where I got this but I have been using it to keep a record of my children's college expenses. It was called "College Cash Flow Chart". I want to know if I can convert the template to Office 2008 and how or where can I go to download a new cash flow sheet. I could really use some beginners help!

When using powerpoint, I have experienced several sudden closes, losing all my last work (a crash? on a Mac? Yeah!). Moreover, of the slide layouts, suddenly the most used one (bullet list) has disappeared. Where can I get that layout? Back to the 2004 version?

MS Office MAC 2008 is regularly crashing, especially Excel. This started happening after the AUTOUPDATE. I use the office suite for the EXCEL application. It is crucial to my work. Even setting the autosave every minute is not good enough.
I am very disappointed and would like this corrected immediately. As I am sure with everybody else.

Bad powerpoint bug
In addition to the very poor performance of powerpoint 2008 there is a very bad bug while selecting to show presentation on the beamer but the comments next slide information etc. on the laptop screen...
In fact this function doesn't work at all because you can't change the screens an thus by default the presentation appears on the laptop screen but the narrator information on the beamer...
That's pretty cool don't you think ?
Please come on and hurry at least for the powerpoint update to publish it THIS week I need that expensive thing.

Why doesnt Iceland get the same deals as other countries, i have tried to get an update for my Office 2004 package that i bought in the beginning of 2008, i finally was told by microsoft in dk that Iceland is not one of the countries that this offer were for, when i look at apple site i cant even see Iceland as one of the country selling apply products i cant buy things from apple or microsoft homepage, because i live in Iceland, why is that ? (i know we arent as many people 300.000 as in other countries but i think this is not fair)

word line spacing
How come in Word when you hit the return key it doubles spaces. I have gone under the format tab and checked single spacing and it still double spaces. When a line wraps automatically it single spaces. Help.

French accents on an American qwerty keyboard
I teach French in the U.S. and frequently switch between English and French within sentences and documents. After years of PC's and Windows XP, I just bought an IMAC and Office Mac 2008. In order to insert properly accented French letters into a word on a PC, I would simultaneously hit the alt key, plus a combination of keypad numbers. In addition, the Word 2003 spellchecker would verify my spelling/genders/grammar in both French and in English within the same document. How can I achieve this on a Mac, with Word 2008? My old key combinations now create strange looking characters. Thanks.

I was using Office 2003 and upgraded to 2008. One of the big issue we have with PowerPoint in our organization is we have a mix of Mac's and PC's. We use a lot of charts that are Excel charts in PowerPoint. Those charts get messed up all the time.
PowerPoint 2008 adds a new level of issues. All the Excel based charts now have the display area reduced so the labels are chopped off. These appear fine in PP 2007/2003. So we need to go and edit all those slides.
Also - why does PPT 2008 update the file save date just by opening the file? even when it is not saved. Is it reformatting the file?
For Word - clicking on the slider bar on the right side of the window does not bring it into focus. You need to click on the document or top of the window before it becomes active. Very annoying.
For Entourage - it would be nice to change the fonts/ colors on MyDay, very hard to read. Also I can't seem to find how to turn on the mini month calendars in Calendar.
Also - most annoying - Entourage spikes the CPU at random moments when nothing much is going on on the laptop. Need to exit to stop the loud fan noises. This happens several times per day.
Haven't played much with Excel yet.

I've only been using Office 2008 for a day, and I can tell you there's lots of issues. The highlights:
- Still breaks Safari and the keychain.
- Still can't register.
- Problem with Word (specifically) and Expose.

- More customizable My Day
- Better Exchange support (one can hope, right?)

Entourage for Mac 2008 - sync impossible with Palm Treo
I've used both Office X for Mac and Office 2004 for Mac and have always been able to sync with my Palm Treo using the entourage interface with Missing Sync for Palm - always worked quickly and without error.
The new development in Office 2008 requires me to use a combination of Sync Services and I Cal. Folks it does not work and when it does it manages either to duplicate data or decides to delete data. A real pain which makes it impossible and dangerous to use.
Does the planned update (12 March) intend to rectify the problem and provide users with a return to the old and trusted Entourage sync interface without having to go through Sync services / I cal route
Please let me know - if nothing is planned I am going back to using Office 2004 for Mac which does work

Chemical Disaster
I am a Professor of Chemistry. For years I have routinely used three programs for preparing classroom lectures and research presentations. Two of these programs have been Word and PowerPoint. The third one, ChemDraw is the major means by which organic chemists create chemical structure graphics.
A ChemDraw graphic pasted into PowerPoint (or Word) has always retained its editable vector characteristics, i.e., the drawing could copied from the Office applications back to ChemDraw and re-edited.
That is no longer the case! Now the ChemDraw graphic once pasted into PowerPoint is rendered into a bitmap when copied and pasted back into the structure drawing software.
What was someone thinking about when this change in file handling was made? Is there some advantage to the use of PowerPoint (or Word) created by removing a function vital to a significant number of Office users? Office 2008 seems to have a number of attractive features, but it is now much less useful; that hardly seems to be an advance. Perhaps the powers that be at Mactopia should contact the creaters of ChemDraw, CambridgeSoft (www.cambridgesoft.com) to understand the importance of a rapid amelioration of the problem.

It's a new formatting version that Microsoft seems to be using. I first saw it in Word 2007. Take a look at your toolbox, under alignment and spacing, paragraph spacing (see "after"?) Make it 0 under the normal template and your problem disappears. I kind of like having it format the paragraphs for me.

Format Object styles
The eyedropper tools don't work in PPT 2008. You pick up the style with one tool, but the "Apply Object Style" eyedropper is always gray. So you can't apply the stlye.

Lack VBA Macro Compatibility
So far I've fairly impressed with Office 2008 and have had little trouble moving over from 2004.
However, as a personal who's company uses spreadsheets extensively that are developed on Windows PC's, the lack of the ability to utilize VBA Macros is just unacceptable. Why would anyone want to go through the process of re-writing every macro in Applescript?!
If this is resolved, I have no alternative but to go back to 2004. I would really recommend that this drawback be resolved as soon as possible.

I would strongly advocate an option to not show the "Sheets, Charts, SmartArt Graphics, WordArt" row at the top of the worksheet. As far as I can tell, there is currently no way to hide this. I find it:
(a) an egregious waste of vertical space
and
(b) highly distracting, because of the optical interference between the vertical lines separating the tabs and the vertical lines separating columns.
Are there any plans for this option? I would dramatically improve the experience of this user.

Can't add Entourage events
For some reason adding calendar events in Entourage running on Leopard changes the month of every event to August. It doesn't seem to do this running Entourage on Tiger. This is a major inconvenience and it renders Entourage useless as a calendar app. Needs fixing.

Please bring back this feature in the update. This is such a critical feature for researchers and other people who live by graphs in Excel. Excel 2008 is virtually useless to us compared to Excel 2004 unless this is fixed. Thanks!

2 months of experience of and NOT counting
About 2 months of trying out the new MS applications. Conclusion: I really don't know what these guys have been doing for the last 4 years. All applications crash about once a day, allhough they were fast initially, I'm getting about the same performance as Office 2004 these days (I can assure you, that is slow). Opening a 3Mb word doc can take more than a minute. My clients put in a lot of complaints about formatting being lost from Apple to PC. Excel is completely screwed: VAB gone, the formula bar is completely afunctional. Powerpoint is still slow as hell. For me Office 2008 is a 100% marketing product: all style and no content.
I hope they come up very quickly with a functional update, so functionality is at least back to parity with the soft I had about 10 years ago (I can assure you, that's not a compliment).

I've downgraded to 2004 and will remain with it until there is a Palm conduit for my Treo. I'll also tell my 300+ students to avoid 2008 until they fix that and other problems (too slow launching

Office for MAC 2008 - Excel
Leaving out so much essential functionality is very poor. I refer to Solver, Visual Basic (the full version would be even better), Analysis Tool Pack, and Goal Seek. Really this is sleight of hand on the part of the software producer. It is reasonable to expect an upgrade to be an upgrade and not a retrograde step. I feel I have been sold to under false pretences. Is it possible to get my money back and go back to 2004?

I seem to have experienced all of the issues raised by previous posters: doesn't play well with Spaces, crashes often, very slow, need VBA, etc.
This "upgrade" is completely crapping craptacular. I dragged it to the trash after a week trying -- nay, hoping to like it.

Played with Office 2008 in an Apple store today. It looks really nice, so I ordered my own private copy of Media Edition in norwegian today.
Hope you release a test version or resources for the partner programs and CPLS soon. I work for a CPLS and we have started getting enquiries into giving Office 2004/2008 classes, especially now that Office 2008 is localised better. It would be great to be able to pitch this

I bought Office '08 for Mac about a week ago because I wanted a faster way to analyze data for lab reports and homework. But I've come to discover that there isn't any data analysis, or any add-in's for that matter, available for Excel. These are very important tools for large companies, as well as science and engineering majors. I'd really like to see these added in the next update. They are greatly needed by many people. I wouldn't have purchased this new version if it would have been advertised that those features were going to be taken out.

Palm & unpleasant surprises
I too was not happy to find my Treo 755 will no longer sync with Entourage 2008; that I'll either have to go back to Office 2004 or use Palm's desktop. The additional $40 program mentioned by others does not work (for me anyway).
I have 2 questions:
1- Will Microsoft fix this problem with Entourage, and if so, when? and,
2- Will Office 2008 have it's own templates or do we have to use the Office 2004 templates (and will all of them work under 2008. I came across the template question because I was looking for a business card template.
Does anyone have a business card template for Word (or even Excel)?

This update is a joke. PowerPoint is slow like a turtle. 2-5 second ONLY to pass to the next TEXT slide...
I'm not talking about a 40 Mb movie. It's just a TEXT presentation with few images at the end.

I just downloaded the 12.0.1 update and for some reason it will not install on my MBP. I have Office 2008 version 12 legal of course and I have never had this problem with an update installer.
I have OS 10.5.2 so my OS should be up to date.
Has anyone else had problems installing the update?

OFFICE UPDATE
After applying the update I restarted the computer and launched Word... (Word is the only Microsoft application I use on a daily basis and I just use it for the basics... I have just been leaving it open at all times, since launching took about 3.5 minutes.)
I launched Word and it seemed to take some time... I figured I would let it sit, quit, and relaunch just it case it had to do some stuff after the initial update... Second launch... Very nice, very quick, useable almost immediately. Could it be faster? Yes, it could be. Maybe in the next update.

Office 2008 update: Still not working!
Too bad! I have an iMac G4 with 10.4.11 running, and 512 Mb memory. I can get the Office run by switching to another user account, but noit in my own (Admin.). It runs if old Office X is also running!!! ??. I de-installet Office X, and removed all files named Microsoft or something else that pointed towards Microsoft, restarted the computer, emptied the trash, re-installet 2008 and the update - but no run (Word). Now I have re-installed the "good old" X 10.1.9.
Still waiting for a solution!

Entourage update 12.0.1 and rules
I have just updated Office (Dutch version) to 12.0.1. When doing a full send/receive in Entourage, the program shortly hangs, then quits. This does not happen when I disable all my rules (tried them 1 by 1, but apparently it is not a single rule that causes it).
Anyone else has this?
(Furthermore, it's nice the sound notifications work now, but it's a pity that basic compatibility with spaces is still absent).

Auto Updater???
Well I couldn't find a post about the latest update (3-11-08) but I figured I would comment here.
A new update was released but my auto updater won't work? There was another person on Versiontracker who commented about this but I don't want to go through what he did getting it to work. It would be nice if Microsoft would do a update to fix this and give me a way to get the update.

Yeh I own a MBP too and I downloaded the installer and attempted to install the update everything ran successfully except when I look at the individual software ID's they still say 12.0.0 and the software updater does not report any software being installed in the log it keeps. This is also the case for the new software updater which isn't logged in installed updates.

Time to move back to 2004?
Office 2008 on my MacBook Pro is the slowest program I've run in ages; barely usable. I had high hopes for this patch, and it did speed things up. Now PowerPoint loads in 20 seconds instead of 30 seconds. Ridiculous. Everyone at the MBU always seem like they have the best of intentions, but they must have to pass their releases to the MS Department of Ineptitude before thy are released to the public. I'm seriously thinking of going back to 2004 under Rosetta; it smoked in comparison.

experience with 12.0.1 update
I had a couple of dealbreaking issues with Office 2008 Excel until yesterday. One concerned cell formatting, which kept reverting after I'd made changes. Another was Excel crashing when I clicked on a choice from a pop-up list of values I'd previously entered.
I installed the 12.0.1 update yesterday and found that these problems had been fixed.
There are numerous small ways in which I still find that new features or interface changes in Office 2008 make life more difficult for me, rather than easier. Nevertheless, the 12.0.1 update fixed the problems that I could not live with, and for that I'm grateful.

All 135 blog comments to date have convinced me that upgrading to Office 2008 for the Mac is a mistake. Under Rosetta, my Office 2004 for the Mac runs well enough to convince me that I'll invest my money for office apps elsewhere. I'll start with iWork 2008 and NeoOffice for significant (read...needed) feature updates and actual speed improvements. It is clear that Microsoft, and its MacBU, are NOT interested in keeping par with Office (for Windows) for the Mac OS X users. Clearly, four (4) years of development to decide VBA wasn't going to be supported demonstrates this. Good luck surviving after this update's sales figures come in. What a shame.

Entourage still showing 12.0.0?
I applied the update and every app BUT Entourage says 12.0.1 now. Entourage still claims to be 12.0.0. And Sync Services promptly crashed twice right after the update.
Did my Entourage not update or is it just incorrectly reporting the version number? Can anyone else confirm?

Compatibility with MS Exchange / Outlook
Sure would be nice to have synching of Notes and Tasks with MS Exchange Server. That way our BlackBerry's would be in synch with Entourage. As it is now, Notes and Tasks/To Do items are locked in Entourage and not available to my BlackBerry.

I ordered Office 2004 in January, and submitted the form that offers 2008 for free ion what I beleive 8 to 10 weeks. The 10th week is approaching, and to date have not received anything. Is that what other have experienced, or should I be more patient?

I updated to Word 2008 german version and it makes me feel like downgrading and demanding my money back! Every now and then it just hangs for a few minutes or brings the cpu close to boiling. Is this just a problem only i experience?
It is really frustrating as office actually prevents me from advancing in writing papers for uni.

Exel Loads Fast, Word Does Not!
Well, I lied! Word loads fast, but is unusable for about 3 minutes... I guess it still needs to completely load even though everything is being displayed on the screen... It just sits there and won't let you do a darn thing... Then all of sudden, it works! Excel is quick to open and is almost ready to be used right away... What the heck?

problems with Office 2008
I downloaded the Office 2008 update about a month ago and have had tons of problems since. The new suite runs incredibly slowly, the new .docx format has cause countless problems with compatibility, and Word quits unexpectedly with an alarming frequency. Autosave files crash on reopening. When will this system be updated? Will these issues be addressed? Is there a way to ensure that .docx files can be opened on computers running 2007 versions of Office? I'm considering wiping the program from my computer entirely and reinstalling 2007, but I would have to convert every 2008 document I've created.

This fixed entourage for me
I used the steps outlined on this blog and afterwards my entourage showed 12.0.1 hope it helps other people who are experiencing this problem
The new update wont install on my computer, it says "You cannot install Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume." That is wrong, the program is there. has anybody else had this problem, or know how to fix it? I am regretting ever buying office 2008

I still got the error: Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close.
After installing Office 2008, Entourage, Power Point and Excel were working fine. Word however was quitting with the error. After installing the update the problem was not solved. The problem was not present for a new user.
I traced the problem to file Lingsoft in
/Home/Library/Preferences
After removing this file the problem is gone.

12.0.1 did not fix Sluggish Word
I encountered the problem of Word 2008 operating extremely sluggishly, after using one of my tech support calls, I updated it with v12.0.1, and trashed my prefs, this brought about only a slight increase in operability. This fix was not sufficient to work on a document that included graphics. I am so glad I chose not to delete my old version of Office X. It is so bad, that if it is not fixed shortly, I am considering asking for my money back and looking elsewhere for other software, because as delivered, it is unuseable. I have not had a chance to work much with Excel 2008 or Power Point 2008 yet. Entourage 2008 appears acceptable, but nothing fantastic.

Migrating from Office 2003 to Office 2008 for Mac
Entourage is NOT Outlook. I am not sure why you even bothered creating a tool that is not any more than Mail, iCal and Address book that Apple already provides.
Entourage lacks:
Almost all of the productive features built into Outlook. Limited address views (1) compared with 7 predefined views.
Calendar updates from iCal, just doesn't work. Duplicates and looses meetings.
Lack of common format for Archival.
Inability to import old data without 3rd party software.

Word unable to open
I bought the new 2008 edition, seemed to work until today when I did my software update on my imac. Then I upgraded the Office 2008. The auto install utility seemed to have difficulty, but seemed to install the critical update from Microsoft, but still doesn't work
How to correct Entourage 2008 installation issues with 12.0.1 Update
If your copy of Entourage 2008 was not updated, the best way to ensure that it's updated properly is to use the Remove Office tool, which is included in the /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Additional Tools folder. Remove Office does not remove any documents or personal settings you have saved.
After you run the Remove Office tool, reinstall Office 2008 from your original DVD, and then restart your computer. It's important that you restart your computer before you install the 12.0.1 update, so don't forget to do it. After your computer restarts, use AutoUpdate to check for updates, and then download and install the 12.0.1 Update.
If you run into problems during installation of the update, try any of the following:
• Move the Microsoft Office 2008 folder back to the Applications folder on your startup drive
• Change the Microsoft Office 2008 folder back to its original name
• Restore any files or other items that were removed from the Microsoft Office 2008 folder
• Do not run scripts or engage in processes that modify the applications in the Microsoft Office 2008 folder.
• Any change to an Office 2008 application can prevent an upgrade for installing successfully

Update, yes, but still a problem with Spaces
When will MS fix the problem we are having with Spaces? All the other applications I use work perfectly - even Filemaker v8.03. I have to turn Spaces off because Word and Excel refuse to play by the rules. Very irritating!

Update can't be installed
Hello there,
I've problems with the new office 2008:
Word uses up to 100% of my cpu capacity (2.2 GH).
Sometimes Word does quit without any reason
So I tried to install the update 12.01:
I did the download despite my autoupdate told me there were now updates available.
I finished the download and started the installation-process.
But, at the moment when it started to choose a harddrive (I have a Windows partition), the installer takes a long time and then tells me that the software that is needed to perform the update isn't installed. But I am working with office.
Can anybody help. I really need to update my software, because the vent' is so loud you can't imagine

Converting Entourage from 2008 to 2004
Are there are any tools that will permit me to convert my Entourage 2008 data store back to Entourage 2004? Office 2008 is so slow, so poorly implemented and so unstable I simply cannot afford to run my business using it any more.

Still NO Exchange Distribution Lists Support!? You've got to be kidding me!
I find it absolutely unacceptable and ridiculous that Entourage 2008 still doesn't support Exchange Distribution Lists!
It's bad enough there's still no Task or Notes synchronization, but distribution lists are a MUST as far as I'm concerned.
If you are going to charge people $399.95 for Exchange Support, you need to give people Full Exchange Support.
For the record, I don't believe for a moment that it can't be done. I truly believe Microsoft is intentionally leaving out these features. It been four years since the last release of Office for Mac, and I must say Exchange 2008 is extremely disappointing!

Entourage Send Mail Error -3253
Hi,
I have been using the Office 2008 applications for a while now, over all they work well and I to have had a few crashes, but all-in-all not the dark picture that most of these other posts are painting.
Well my problem is with Entourage 2008 12.0.1. I was able to compose an email and when I hit the send button off it went, no problem no fuss.
Now that the Auto-update ran every time I try and send an email I get an -3253 error, strange. If I just press the Send All button it goes with out a problem.
So, why will it not send like I expect it to without having to wait for it to fail then press the Send All.

I have had terrible issues updating this program on the Imac. It will not update, no matter what is done, including reinstalling Office. Clearly, from this site and many others there is a problem with the update recognizing the volume in OS X and updating completely. Numerous calls to Microsoft result in failure trying to install the update, which is critical considering the problems related to security in the original version. Microsoft refuses to acknowledge that their update program in flawed, and to date has done nothing to correct this update. They blame OS X for the problem. This is simply not true. Once again, they do not take responsibility for the viability of their Mac programs. I challenge Microsoft to correct this problem, stop blaming OS X, and to stop making excuses. We all need to use Office, so fix the problem.

A Change to Make in Entourage
In Entourage, when I choose Save As to save a message elsewhere, among the two choices are Entourage and Simple Text Document.
In your next revision, you might want to change that to TextEdit Document so as to not confuse users who only know OS-X.

First select all of the cells, then from the insert menu choose cells, click on the protection tab, make sure there is a check mark in the locked cell option, choose OK.
Next highlight the cells that you want the user to be able to edit, again go to the insert menu, choose cells, click on the protection tab and remove the check mark, then choose OK.
The last step is to click on the tools menu, choose protection, protect sheet, entering a password is optional, but only the cells that you had selected when you went to format, cells, protection and removed the check mark from can be edited without first unprotecting the worksheet. Hope this helps.

Complex HTML, LDAP, the Remove button and Mark Unread
Three features that just have to make it into the next update of Entourage...
1. Complex HTML so e-mail that is forwarded doesn't lose all of its formatting. I find it incredible that Outlook has been doing this for 8 years and Entourage can't.
2. Handle LDAP so the Exchange GAL can be accessed via port 80, same as Outlook. It is ridiculous that a script is needed to add this functionality to Entourage. And while you're at it, how about the ability to download the GAL so it is resident.
3. Either get rid of the Remove button or make it functional. It is silly that Remove All Attachments is a menu choice but isn't tied to the Remove button.
4. Minor but important improvement: enable Mark Unread as a toolbar icon. Your brethren at the Office group thought it was so important that they hard coded it into the ribbon, but it isn't available in Entrouage.

Sorry guys... this really isn't good enough. Excel 2007 now only supports the new tables... and Excel 2008 only supports the old lists. So a simple list will not only not seamlessly work together... they simply won't work together at ALL.
Sure, I'm also disappointed that the formatting form 2007 is not in 2008 (although it seems to be there for Word), but what I am talking about now is BASIC DATA...
How can this be? Seriously!
Sorry if I sound a little annoyed, but I've invested in this to be compatible with other Windows users... so now I still have to run Office 2007 in Fusion. How do I get a refund?

Initial feedback
Hi; I just moved back to Apple after 12 years in the Windows side. I was a Power Office User, and left Office 2003 on XP Pro for Office 2008 for Mac.
So far, some HUGE disappointments:
1. No Visual Basic macros on Excel 2008. I simply cannot work this way so I am now looking to buy Excel 2004. I am being offered it for $399, which is terrible. There is no excuse for this lack of compatibility between Windows and Mac versions for heavy corporate users.
2. No way to compress pictures or graphics in PPT. This is a big deal as otherwise PPT presentations can get huge and unwieldy. Why would this not be included?
3. Automatic formatting in Word and Entourage e-mails and documents is VERY limited compared to Windows: For example automatic numbering in Windows automatically puts in indented categories when you tab (such as 2-a, etc). The Mac version just puts in a tab. Very dumb version.
After years missing the Apple world, I am now thoroughly displeased with this application and the huge lack of features for power users. If what you wanted was for people NOT to migrate away from Windows, congratulations.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update
When I first purchased Office 2008 for Mac I had endless troubles getting it to work out of the box. Entourage, Excel, PowerPoint would continously quit unexpectidly in the middle of writing important documents. After several weeks, I decided to give it a flick and move back to iWorks because of the sheer speed and robustness of these apps.
I came across this update from Microsoft claiming to fix these crashes and many other problems in Office 2008. So I attempted to reinstall and applied the update.
I have now been using Office 08 for a week and have not experienced a single crash! Finally, a little faith is restored!

12.0.1 Installed but I still have instability in Excel
I am using the latest version of Excel 2008 for mac (ver. 12.0.1) and it has a bug that causes a crash under the following circumstances. Open a document with two charts that are created/dependent on data in the document. Create a new document and copy/paste the two charts from the old document to the new document. Now close the old document. The new document with the copied charts will now fill the screen with one of the charts and completely crash the OS.
Please fix this bug and also learn to write proper Mac software as .app files instead of .pkg files so when you software crashes it only hangs your application instead of bringing down the whole OS. The only time my Mac crashes is when I am running a Microsoft product on it.

Office 2008 version status
Please note: The Office team for Mac blog is dated as of 21 Feb 08, and I am writing this on April 6th, so I realize a lot may have happened since the blog was last updated. I am a strong supporter of Microsoft Office for the Mac and hope Microsoft will continue to provide excellence in its Macintosh products.
I would like to know what version of Office 2008 is available and what fixes it addresses. Likewise, if the most recent release is 12.0.1 (and if it has been released), does it address the problem with Word "crashing" on exiting, at least with the student/home edition?
Additionally, are there plans to restore some of the lost functionality between earlier versions and Office 2008? I would very much like to move to Office 2008 (student/home)edition, but I do not want to sacrifice usability (stability) or functionality currently available.
I plan to buy Office 2008 as soon as I have confidence that I will be getting the top-notch product I would expect to get from Microsoft.

I am using Excel 2008 to draw some basic four data series charts on a MacBook pro 2.0Ghz with 2GB of Ram. the problem? it is incredibly slow! it takes almost 5-6 seconds just to show the title in the charts!
Moreover, PLEASE, give us the chance to filter the data label when using pivot tables. always double-clicking, selecting which voice to hide etc is extremely slow and unfriendly.
finally, I need VBA macros. is there a way to fix that?

Get equations right and fix bugs!!!!
Purchased Office Mac 2008 so I could work on my Maths/Structures University work better with an improved equation support. No update??? Plus when saving as a docx file, all the equations created with the existing crap Equation Editor come out blurry as soon as the file is opened. Downloads for this update are SLOOOOOW. Can't download it. Safari opens the page but when I click on DOWNLOAD, it expires. Firefox doesn't even do that. So please:
1) Fix load times. They're horrendous - even on a Quad Mac Pro.
2) Fix the equation editor. Or provide VBA support so that we can use MathType
3) Fix the bugs. Sometimes I can't select pictures in Microsoft Word - what the hell? To fix, I need to scroll up and then back down again and bingo, it works.
If you want to charge three/four times as much as your competitor (iWork), get it right, please, you're the biggest software developer in the world. Don't transfer Windows bugs to the elegant Macintosh platform.

Unfortunately, I thought buying Office 2008 ( I liked and was used to Word)for MAC would not present a problem. Problems are all I have had since installing Office 2008. Now Entourage has now blocked my emails from my Congressman, with a header that states" ENTOURAGE HAS BLOCKED YOUR RESPONSE TO THIS EMAIL FOR YOUR SECURITY." Needles to say, I am uninstalling Office 2008 and giving it away.

Love the new outfit of office 2008 and that is sure a nice pro.
Nevertheless, I do have serious trouble working with both, word and excel, since the programs keep on crashing constantly with my docs, even after installing both updates. Actually, the installed updates are not listed in the field "show installed updates" of the update manager.
A second drawback (you might have heard it too many times) is definitely the lacking support for macros...
Please fix the stability issues, otherwise I have to go back to other suites...
But I don't see an equivalent for Mac Office 2008 - is there one?

Bugs and missing features of Word 2008 (Office 2008)
I switched to Office 2008 for Mac last January (I was using Office 2004 before).
There are some good new features.
But there are a few very big problems as well, which I kindly ask you to fix in one of your next updates:
1- time to launch: it got considerably longer in Office 2008 compared to Office 2004. Please note that I have the latest MacBook Pro model and still, it takes an eternity to start Word, Excel, etc.
2- spelling checker: I live in Switzerland, where there are 4 official languages and in the daily business, we happen to edit documents in english, german, french, italian. Unlike earlier versions (e.g. Office 2003 for Windows), the new Office 2008 for Mac is still not capable of automatically recognizing the language in which a document is being written. Therefore, if I move from a french document to an english one, I will see almost ALL words underlined in red (spelling errors).
This is sooo annoying! We are then always forced to keep switching the Program's language settings. Try to do this 10x per day ..!
What is even worse, just changing the language alone is still not enough. Text inserted after that moment keep to be considered in the default language (which can be different). As a consequence, in addition to changing language settings every time we switch document, we also need to reconfigure the "default" language setting every time!!
3- frequent Word 2008 crashes: I just can't believe that after all these years, in Word 2008 you still do not have the stability of the application under your firm control! Frequent program crashes! Loss of work!!
It is enough to insert some picture in a Word document, move it around a bit, add a caption and bingo! the "sorry a fatal error occurred" dialog appears. I don't remember having seen this even one single time with Adobe's applications.
By the way, Automatic Recovery works only once. If Word 2008 crashes a second time (for unknown reasons) immediately after reopening and trying to recover the document, then we are screwed up. In fact, Word 2008 will reopen a third time, but it will display a blank document!
Just after installing Office 2008, I called a friend to show him the great new features of Word. Guess what happened the very first time I fired up Word 2008 to open a document? Word froze, I had to kill it and restart it! I felt so sorry!
4- color theme: why can we change it only in Powerpoint and not in Word?
If I insert a table in my Word document by using "Quick Tables" and select the second template on the list (it comes in a green color theme), there is no simple way just to modify its color theme to -say- blue.
Also, it would be nice to have the possibility to post a table that I "personalized" on the "Quick Tables" templates list, for later use.

I'm really surprised though that Microsoft releases a software product of such a low quality level.

Advice for Those Who Made the Mistake of Installing Excel 2008
If you're in my boat and have a ton of xlsx files you made in Excel 08, but now need to the original graphing and data analysis functions of Excel 04, here's what to do:
Just pop in your original office 2004 install disc and install Excel 2004. It won't over-right excel 2008.
I chose to ONLY install Excel 2004, and deselected all other applications. But, i suppose you could do this if necessary.
Within 5 minutes of installing the previous version of excel, i've found heaven. Saved myself about 10 headaches and about 30 minutes of time!
To heck with Excel 08.

You need to fix the Exposé- and Spaces-issues NOW!
Since Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage are all completely useless, unstable and a step back from previous versions, I have removed them and gone back to 2004-versions. Word 2008 seems to work OK though and I have therefore kept it installed to try to get something back from the pile of money i laid out for it. The problem is that the Spaces-issues are driving me completely insane, how is it possible to make something behave like this in Leopard? Even Office 2004 works just fine?!?! If you don't fix this soon I will completely uninstall the Office 2008-suite, and demand my money back from the store i bought it from.

Huge problems with Office:mac 2008
Hi there. I'm having huge problems with Office 2008.
1. Short Word files with text only -- not too many problems. But as soon as I enter an arrow or a speech bubble or any other graphic, I start having problems and when I go to print the document, Word hangs. I have to remove every graphic and then print.
2. Even in a short Word file, with no graphics, I have problems with formatting. When I double-click a word to highlight it, and then click "bold", ALL the text in the whole document goes bold. (Same with italic and underline.)
3. If I want to indent a paragraph and I click the right-pointing arrow in the "bullets and numbering" panel, the whole document indents! I can use "un-do" but then all the indenting (incuding the indents I want) return to the left-hand margin.
4. In long Word documents (eg. chapter of a book) very strange things happen. eg. If I delete a table, the cursor jumps to a different place in the document. Without warning, page breaks change place.
I don't have a single problem with any other software (Dreamweaver, InDesign, MYOB, Photoshop Elements, Pages, Keynote, ....)
I'm a writer, so I don't use Excel or Powerpoint very much. However, I rely on Word. All versions have been somewhat unstable, but Word 2008 is the most unreliable version I've ever had. I'm going back to my earlier version.

prior to powerpoint 2008 i was able to import clip art, double click the picture and get asked if i wanted to convert the picture to an object. i cannot do this now - or maybe there is another way?

As for Entourage:
1. the automatic hyperlink recognition is paradoxically STILL missing. And this is the ONLY Office app lef to implement such a banal feature;
2. when adding a contact from Entourage to an addres book located in a public folder, it is not shared properly with Outlook users. I mean, in Outlook when you go and select the 'public' address book to be looked up in normal message composing, the contact added by Entourage does NOT show up correctly: it seems to have no name and only the email account. This makes contact sharing between the Mac and PC side of an Exchange-based network quite useless. Could you fix it?
As for MSN Messenger 7.0:
audio/video chat is still not available for live messenger accounts, but ONLY for Office Communications Server 2007 accounts. Which is ridiculous, indeed.
Hope the situation will improve as soon as new updates are released.

Customized error bar in excel
I was terribly shocked that there was no way to set up the customized error bar in Excel 08. It might not be a big deal for general users, but for people in scinence or academic field, it means everything! Elimination of this feature makes Excel useless for us. I was quite satisfied with powerpoint but I may consider to go back to 2004 because of this, which is insane and waste of money. I couldn't find any explanation or news about this issue, even in the ms update. Please let all of us know what's going on and what kinds of efforts are putting on it. Please!!!!!

Hidden Text Problems Word 2008
I have a page of cells set up as a template to print file folder labels. Once a label is printed, I hide the text so that it no longer prints, yet I can see which cells/labels have been used. With Word 2008, hiding text in a cell causes the cell to be disregarded and contents of other cells move up to fill its place. This is different behavior from Word 2004 and annoying.

How can I get some assistance?
When I run the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Update 12.0.1 Update, it does not allow me to select a destination and says, "You cannot install Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Update 12.0.1 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume."
I have already installed "AutoUpdate-211UpdateEN.dmg." Furthermore, I have restarted my computer.
How am I supposed to figure out what to do next?

Under 10.5.2, the latest SP1 of Office 2008 will STILL crash when printing to a laserwriter IIg using the print command from the file menu.
Please fix this soon! If a word processor can't print, it is useless.

Greetings from Massachusetts on May 16, 2008. I have used Microsoft Word for about fifteen years and I still love it, but the recent upgrade from 2004 to 2008 brings two unusual problems that I hope you can fix. (I'm on an iMac, with OS Leopard)
1) When I type a series of dashes across the page and then hit "return", the dashes change to a solid line all across the page. I don't want this to happen. After much angst, I finally discover the fix at: Tools>AutoCorrect>AutoFormat as You Type and then uncheck Borders. This seems odd, to call dashes and lines a Border. It would be simpler for users to call dashes and lines "dashes and lines" or something similar.
2) My default font and size are Times 16. Still, when I download material from the Internet into Word, the font and size are often different. So I need a fast way to change everything on my document to Times 16. There used to be a Record Macro function in Word 2004. But apparently Microsoft has deleted the Macro function in Word 2008. Why? Excel Page Layout View - Not WYSIWYG
I am not sure if this is the right forum for an Excel question but this is where Google sent me.
The Page Layout View in the new Excel 2008 Office does not show the actual print page. For example: the Page Layout View shows late column of my spreadsheet off the 8-1/2" x 11" page. However the Print Review show the all the columns on one page as they should be.
Is there some way I can get the Page Layout View to show the actual layout of the printed page.
Several people in my office have which back to the old Excel version because Page Layout View work in the older Excel by not the 2008 Office version.
Any help will be greatly appericated.

It seems like just yesterday we were all being so assured that the conversion of Office docs to XML format would be seamless and painless, that converters would be available and we had nothing to fear. It's a good thing Office 2007 on Windows is so slow to catch on because we'd be in real trouble if we actually had XML docs to convert. Still, the change will come, and with Office 2008 released it's going to be sooner than later.
So, is this a ploy to get people to upgrade or is it really so hard to write a converter for software you created yourself? Apple already has Office XML converters built into iWork '08 and that was last August, and DataViz had its translators finished last year as well. For Microsoft to not have these out on the day of Office 2007's release is simply ridiculous. It's been 13 months. Then the delay of the converter was announced, and now it's delayed again until 18 months after Office 2007's release.
I've said it before. We want to love you but you give us all kinds of reasons to doubt and mistrust and to ultimately leave you. These kinds of gaffes are big holes in your bucket and while you have all kinds of water to lose out of a freaking huge bucket, you're going to have to start caring a little more about doing a complete job at some point.
I don't want to rag about one little converter but it is a direct indicator of the bigger problem here which we have discussed before. You can't just drag this sack out in front of us and stand glowing next to it and expect us to continue to pay money for what's in it when the things we have been asking for are not there.
Are the converters free? Yes. Are they for software that is now outdated? Yes. I understand why this might seem to be a lower priority for you. But do you see why your credibility is in question here and why that is so important?
I won't mention the schedules for RDC 2 or Messenger 7 either.
One kudos for you - thanks for the 11.4.0 update for Office 2004 and the Entourage fixes. Haven't seen if they work but not forgetting about them in that app is much appreciated.

What I'd Love to See
1 - Add the ability to link text when composing emails. You know, when I say click here and I'd like to put a link on that. This is really bugging me.
2 - Ability to export my calendar as an .ics file. Or fix the iCal sync issues. I find myself always having to clarify which event is right, the iCal one or the Entourage one. Then I end up loosing half of them.
3 - Allow me to delete some of the 'auto complete' email address that show up when composing a message. I don't need most of them.
4 - When hitting reply, always quote the entire original message no matter if I have some text selected or not.
5 - Grammar check?
For Excel, my only issue is that Excel and Quicksliver cause conflicts until one or both crash. Maybe that's a Quicksliver issue though.
For Word, the only thing I've found is that I can't copy text from Word into Dreamweaver MX 2004. Not sure why either. Copying from Entourage it works fine.
My day is cool, but I'd rather have it as a true Dashboard widget or have it appear when clicking on the toolbar icon and not having to select it from the menu. Like how the dock icon works. Maybe use this toolbar icon for upcoming meeting counts too.
Notebook is pretty sweet. I don't use it half as much as I should. Would love it if when I put in a checkbox, that when I hit return, it created another checkbox automatically for me.
Those are my thoughts. Overall it's pretty nice. Course my previous version was Office X (not 2004).

Bought Excel2008 and had to go back to 2004
On top of that, my debut with Office was not good. I found to bugs and had to get an Office 2004 in order to get my work done.
1. In Excel there is no option for pointing to the range for "x" axis in the graph menu.
2. In Entourage there is no Sync module for PocketMac for Blackberry, even though 2004 has it.
I would very much appreciate any hint on when will these issues be solved in order to start working with Office2008.

I then try to point to my identity and it still won't recognize it.

Only after I had installed 2008 and received an Excel workbook from a client did I discover this new, slower Excel did not support VBA macros.
I don't even like VBA, but until VBA is discontinued in Windows apps (is that coming in the next upgrade?) it continues to be non-negotiable in the world that Bill made.

Why is it so difficult?
I don't understand this. Updating should make software better, not worse. I don't mind a little learning curve to figure out where commands are, but why should I pay to have a lot of the functionality that I depend on to do my work break? I have used MS office for years, on Mac and windows, and with each release it seems like I spend more and more time fighting the program to do what I want (and I don't want to do anything complicated). It has gotten to the point that the only reason I stick with it is because I need the compatibility, but with open document formats that is changing.
I want this product to work well, but it simply does not. Superficial elements get better with time, but the core functionality suffers. I don't understand why this is.

You gotta be kidding me - late June? That's a FIVE month slip!
Funny thing is, I don't miss much of the bloatware that is Office. And iWork reads and converts Office docs much better than your "free", late converter. The more we talk about it, the less we feel that having Office 2008 is a necessity. iWork 08 was cheaper and does virtually all we need it to do. While we'll probably upgrade to Office 08 anyway, I'm sorely disappointed in Microsoft's development priorities and resource allocation to the MBU.

Two suggestions of MacOffice Team
2. why can't you repackage the VBA engine that ships with Office 2004 as a downloadable add-on to Office 2008, I believe that bridging the two worlds is possible without months of development.
Office 2008 will be a great product but it is unfinished at the moment.

Address Bar Idiocy
Does anyone else find it highly annoying that there is a free floating formula bar (which logically belongs to one spreadsheet window) that one cannot permanently anchor in the window and that has to sit either between the mac menu bar or entirely below the window?
If you produce MAC software - at least think it through to the standard expected of MAC software!
This is really the most #$%#%#@%#$%#^ I've seen ... I had really hoped that the UI design gets cleaned up logically and workflow wise, not just prettied up.
Furthermore, why are all really important shortcuts that a heavy Excel user needs all the time not mapped (e.g. Paste Special) Hello? Are you guys actually using your product or is it just meant to be pretty (if I want that I'll use numbers which will wins hands down on the stun factor).

In the meantime, I'm doing fine with Numbers and Pages, asking myself why I even bothered with the upgrade. I will say this: this is the last chance I will give to the current way Office Mac is done. Don't expect to pry anything else out of my wallet until full support for Exchange Tasks, Notes, Mail, Contacts, and preferably in a non-monolithic data structure. Apple Mail works great with an Exchange account I set up, but no Exchange Tasks, of course. But that makes it no different from Entourage!

Huge Stability Issues in Office 2008
Every time I attempt to cut and paste from Excel to any other non-office app it crashes Excel.
Work crashes periodically for no apparent reason what so ever.
I really hope the patch addresses these issues or I am going to have to go back to Office 2004.

Right now I'm looking at about 3.5 minutes of launching before any 2008 program is available for normal use. It shows up quickly, but you can't use it until it completely loads, slowing down my entire system until complete. Once it is finished loading, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are nice and fast.
Another fix that would be nice is the paragraph formating, since when is that kind of a gap between sentences? It should come formatted at 0 instead of the 12 I think it is set at.
It should also come preset to only save as .DOC and you should have to actively find the option to save as .DOCX since nothing really works under that right now. I don't know of too many corporations that are actively pursing ANY new Microsoft software for fear of it killing their current setup... I don't blame them, it sure is rough around the edges!

I installed Office 2008 on a brand new MacBook, and here is my experience:
it runs slower on the Mac than the PC, even though the Mac has a far more powerful CPU.
There are no keyboard shortcuts, unlike Excel 2007 for Windows, which is a very big negative and a time waster for a 'power' user.
Tasks like Sort are far slower on the Mac.
It crashed three times the first time I used it.
Granted, by mistake, we purchased the Student/Home edition. Could it be that the regular or professional version would solve all these problems?

Home Use Program
So, they pointed out a "Employee Purchase Program" I know nothing about... I am waiting for their answer about this program, but I think the HUP now will be Windows-only for Office.
With the removal of VBA in the Mac OS product (because it is to complex to port to the Intel processors now used in the Mac as I read elsewhere), I think I will stick with my old Office 2004.

Look, we, your customers, need this stuff to work. We need it to do our work. And right now, the only version of Office that has the functionality we need is Office 2004. Office 2008, like iWork, is a beautiful, shiny toy. But the feature set is reduced. Fewer export formats. Fewer options, no VBA--it's just not usable in an enterprise environment. Office 2004 may be "ugly", but it does what we need--with the exception of opening Office 2007 files.
Unless your bugfixes for Office 2008 include "Re-enabling legacy export formats" and "re-implementing VBA", please give your customers what they need to do their jobs before patching up your white elephant.

Serious bug with ChemDraw graphics
"Microsoft removed the ability to retrieve the original chemical data in pictures pasted into Microsoft Word when they released Microsoft Office 2008 (if you copy and paste a structure in Word 2008, for example, into ChemDraw, you can't edit it). We clearly do not support this decision, but we have little influence over Microsoft's development activities. If you preferred the old behavior in Microsoft Word, we strongly recommend that you contact Microsoft and tell them that. Until/unless they restore this feature in a future version of Microsoft Word, you will need to save the ChemDraw files as separate documents. Of course, if you continue to use an older version of Microsoft Word that has this feature, you can continue to use it as you always have."

Entourage Feedback
1) Notification sounds don't work. (I know you're aware of this already)
2) Choosing to edit a previously sent email no longer lets you alter the subject line, just the message body
3) From the sent items list, there is no "resend" option any longer
4) You can no longer open the address list in a new window.
Perhaps these are being worked on. Perhaps there are already ways to do these things that I am unaware of because of the upgrade. But nonetheless, I'm surprised these significant inconsistencies still remain despite months of beta testing.

Now with 2008 if I "paste as picture" the hidden gridlines come over from Excel, and the "picture" is very, very pixelated. It's like looking at an overly blown-up screenshot of Excel. This function worked just fine in 2004, why the step backward?

2. The customise toolbar function doesn't seem to allow me to get rid of the new elements gallery toolbar at the top of each document. This is very annoying waste of screen space for a function that I might use a couple of times each year.
3. Excel does not seem to remember the format of data in a column. Every time I open a sheet and enter a date in a 'date column', it is formatted as something completely different. Have to go back and reformat the cells every time. Annoying.
Thinking very seriously about retreating the Office 2004.
Sort it out Microsoft.

Entourage 2008 inline pdf viewing
With Entourage 2008,I can no longer see pdf attachments directly in my email. I have to open the attachments to see them. I was able to see them fine in Entourage 2004-and, since I moved my identity to Entourage 2008, I know the same emails no longer show the PDFs.
I have one client with Entourage 2008, and she can see her pdf files. I have another client with entourage 2008 and she sees her pdfs all blurry. In all cases we can all open our pdfs and they are fine. the issues are clearly entourage.
Will this be fixed?

Sync services fix is so critical
Mobility is so critical to the way I've worked for a long time and Entourage sync services is just plain broken so its not possible to use. However, I used Outlook from 1997 to 2003 and Entourage to this day and I had a very effective way of working. I'm now greatly impacted by not being able to use Entourage.
In the discussion forums, this is one of the most hotly discussed topics and users and anxiously waiting for a fix. I hope Microsoft addresses this as soon as possible (maybe even in the upcoming upgrage).

too late for this one but PLEASE!!!
Please fix the following:
- window orders gets all messy. finder window stays on top of office windows and sometimes office windows dont move to the front when clicked. it takes a few minutes of working with office, spaces and expose to find this bug.
- html e-mail. this is just lazy dev work. this product should not have shipped without html e-mail authoring.
- excel data filters. in office 2007 you can select all values or use a tick-box to select multiple values in its data filters in excel 08 its nothing, one or all, but no "multi-select" this really really sucks.
- excel heat maps. when you use a heat map in excel 2007, save the doc and try to open it in 08 you get a "feature not supported" read only message. there are a number of these. thats not true compatibility...
- excel cannot scale with large data sheets. it crashes when you try to do data work with large sheets.
- expand and collapse sections is not compatible with office 2007. office 2008 does not have the same expand/collapse support of sections as office 2007 which causes unreadable sheets when you use multi-layer pivot tables and try to expand and collapse sections.
- toolbar and menu-bar consistency between apps. it really looks like the 4 apps were developed by different teams. the windows, toolbars and menus all behave in different ways... why is this?
- import and export to pst? come on. we had at least import for office 2004. many of us have data in pst files and we need to get to it please.
- please make it easier to work with animations in ppt. i takes forever to add an animation on a complex slide. its not easy to cancel the auto-animation play when you add a new effect.
can duplicate all of these for you in 15 minutes on a livemeeting. let me know if you need help to find your bugs.
we use the software in the real world every day.

(1) Entourage dumps pretty often -- and yes, I've been reporting them to Microsoft. I'm integrating it with Microsoft Exchange Server
(2) Microsoft Office 2008 and Leopard Spaces don't play well together at all! Try it: use Spaces and have Excel open in one space and Entourage in another. Open an attachment in Entourage. The only way I can find where it was opened is by hitting F8 and F9. Then, frequently the attachment is at the bottom of the window stack!

In fact this function doesn't work at all because you can't change the screens an thus by default the presentation appears on the laptop screen but the narrator information on the beamer...

PowerPoint 2008 adds a new level of issues. All the Excel based charts now have the display area reduced so the labels are chopped off. These appear fine in PP 2007/2003. So we need to go and edit all those slides.
Also - why does PPT 2008 update the file save date just by opening the file? even when it is not saved. Is it reformatting the file?
For Word - clicking on the slider bar on the right side of the window does not bring it into focus. You need to click on the document or top of the window before it becomes active. Very annoying.
For Entourage - it would be nice to change the fonts/ colors on MyDay, very hard to read. Also I can't seem to find how to turn on the mini month calendars in Calendar.
Also - most annoying - Entourage spikes the CPU at random moments when nothing much is going on on the laptop. Need to exit to stop the loud fan noises. This happens several times per day.
Haven't played much with Excel yet.

Entourage for Mac 2008 - sync impossible with Palm Treo
The new development in Office 2008 requires me to use a combination of Sync Services and I Cal. Folks it does not work and when it does it manages either to duplicate data or decides to delete data. A real pain which makes it impossible and dangerous to use.
Does the planned update (12 March) intend to rectify the problem and provide users with a return to the old and trusted Entourage sync interface without having to go through Sync services / I cal route
Please let me know - if nothing is planned I am going back to using Office 2004 for Mac which does work

Chemical Disaster
A ChemDraw graphic pasted into PowerPoint (or Word) has always retained its editable vector characteristics, i.e., the drawing could copied from the Office applications back to ChemDraw and re-edited.
That is no longer the case! Now the ChemDraw graphic once pasted into PowerPoint is rendered into a bitmap when copied and pasted back into the structure drawing software.
What was someone thinking about when this change in file handling was made? Is there some advantage to the use of PowerPoint (or Word) created by removing a function vital to a significant number of Office users? Office 2008 seems to have a number of attractive features, but it is now much less useful; that hardly seems to be an advance. Perhaps the powers that be at Mactopia should contact the creaters of ChemDraw, CambridgeSoft (www.cambridgesoft.com) to understand the importance of a rapid amelioration of the problem.

However, as a personal who's company uses spreadsheets extensively that are developed on Windows PC's, the lack of the ability to utilize VBA Macros is just unacceptable. Why would anyone want to go through the process of re-writing every macro in Applescript?!
If this is resolved, I have no alternative but to go back to 2004. I would really recommend that this drawback be resolved as soon as possible.

I have 2 questions:

2- Will Office 2008 have it's own templates or do we have to use the Office 2004 templates (and will all of them work under 2008. I came across the template question because I was looking for a business card template.

I have OS 10.5.2 so my OS should be up to date.

OFFICE UPDATE
I launched Word and it seemed to take some time... I figured I would let it sit, quit, and relaunch just it case it had to do some stuff after the initial update... Second launch... Very nice, very quick, useable almost immediately. Could it be faster? Yes, it could be. Maybe in the next update.

Auto Updater???
A new update was released but my auto updater won't work? There was another person on Versiontracker who commented about this but I don't want to go through what he did getting it to work. It would be nice if Microsoft would do a update to fix this and give me a way to get the update.

experience with 12.0.1 update
I installed the 12.0.1 update yesterday and found that these problems had been fixed.
There are numerous small ways in which I still find that new features or interface changes in Office 2008 make life more difficult for me, rather than easier. Nevertheless, the 12.0.1 update fixed the problems that I could not live with, and for that I'm grateful.

I traced the problem to file Lingsoft in

How to correct Entourage 2008 installation issues with 12.0.1 Update
After you run the Remove Office tool, reinstall Office 2008 from your original DVD, and then restart your computer. It's important that you restart your computer before you install the 12.0.1 update, so don't forget to do it. After your computer restarts, use AutoUpdate to check for updates, and then download and install the 12.0.1 Update.
If you run into problems during installation of the update, try any of the following:
• Move the Microsoft Office 2008 folder back to the Applications folder on your startup drive
• Change the Microsoft Office 2008 folder back to its original name
• Restore any files or other items that were removed from the Microsoft Office 2008 folder
• Do not run scripts or engage in processes that modify the applications in the Microsoft Office 2008 folder.
• Any change to an Office 2008 application can prevent an upgrade for installing successfully

Update can't be installed
I've problems with the new office 2008:
Word uses up to 100% of my cpu capacity (2.2 GH).
Sometimes Word does quit without any reason
So I tried to install the update 12.01:
I did the download despite my autoupdate told me there were now updates available.
I finished the download and started the installation-process.
But, at the moment when it started to choose a harddrive (I have a Windows partition), the installer takes a long time and then tells me that the software that is needed to perform the update isn't installed. But I am working with office.
Can anybody help. I really need to update my software, because the vent' is so loud you can't imagine

Still NO Exchange Distribution Lists Support!? You've got to be kidding me!
It's bad enough there's still no Task or Notes synchronization, but distribution lists are a MUST as far as I'm concerned.
If you are going to charge people $399.95 for Exchange Support, you need to give people Full Exchange Support.
For the record, I don't believe for a moment that it can't be done. I truly believe Microsoft is intentionally leaving out these features. It been four years since the last release of Office for Mac, and I must say Exchange 2008 is extremely disappointing!

Entourage Send Mail Error -3253
I have been using the Office 2008 applications for a while now, over all they work well and I to have had a few crashes, but all-in-all not the dark picture that most of these other posts are painting.
Well my problem is with Entourage 2008 12.0.1. I was able to compose an email and when I hit the send button off it went, no problem no fuss.
Now that the Auto-update ran every time I try and send an email I get an -3253 error, strange. If I just press the Send All button it goes with out a problem.
So, why will it not send like I expect it to without having to wait for it to fail then press the Send All.

First select all of the cells, then from the insert menu choose cells, click on the protection tab, make sure there is a check mark in the locked cell option, choose OK.
Next highlight the cells that you want the user to be able to edit, again go to the insert menu, choose cells, click on the protection tab and remove the check mark, then choose OK.
The last step is to click on the tools menu, choose protection, protect sheet, entering a password is optional, but only the cells that you had selected when you went to format, cells, protection and removed the check mark from can be edited without first unprotecting the worksheet. Hope this helps.

Complex HTML, LDAP, the Remove button and Mark Unread
1. Complex HTML so e-mail that is forwarded doesn't lose all of its formatting. I find it incredible that Outlook has been doing this for 8 years and Entourage can't.
2. Handle LDAP so the Exchange GAL can be accessed via port 80, same as Outlook. It is ridiculous that a script is needed to add this functionality to Entourage. And while you're at it, how about the ability to download the GAL so it is resident.
3. Either get rid of the Remove button or make it functional. It is silly that Remove All Attachments is a menu choice but isn't tied to the Remove button.
4. Minor but important improvement: enable Mark Unread as a toolbar icon. Your brethren at the Office group thought it was so important that they hard coded it into the ribbon, but it isn't available in Entrouage.

Sure, I'm also disappointed that the formatting form 2007 is not in 2008 (although it seems to be there for Word), but what I am talking about now is BASIC DATA...
How can this be? Seriously!
Sorry if I sound a little annoyed, but I've invested in this to be compatible with other Windows users... so now I still have to run Office 2007 in Fusion. How do I get a refund?

Initial feedback
So far, some HUGE disappointments:
1. No Visual Basic macros on Excel 2008. I simply cannot work this way so I am now looking to buy Excel 2004. I am being offered it for $399, which is terrible. There is no excuse for this lack of compatibility between Windows and Mac versions for heavy corporate users.
2. No way to compress pictures or graphics in PPT. This is a big deal as otherwise PPT presentations can get huge and unwieldy. Why would this not be included?
3. Automatic formatting in Word and Entourage e-mails and documents is VERY limited compared to Windows: For example automatic numbering in Windows automatically puts in indented categories when you tab (such as 2-a, etc). The Mac version just puts in a tab. Very dumb version.
After years missing the Apple world, I am now thoroughly displeased with this application and the huge lack of features for power users. If what you wanted was for people NOT to migrate away from Windows, congratulations.

I came across this update from Microsoft claiming to fix these crashes and many other problems in Office 2008. So I attempted to reinstall and applied the update.
I have now been using Office 08 for a week and have not experienced a single crash! Finally, a little faith is restored!

12.0.1 Installed but I still have instability in Excel
Please fix this bug and also learn to write proper Mac software as .app files instead of .pkg files so when you software crashes it only hangs your application instead of bringing down the whole OS. The only time my Mac crashes is when I am running a Microsoft product on it.

I would like to know what version of Office 2008 is available and what fixes it addresses. Likewise, if the most recent release is 12.0.1 (and if it has been released), does it address the problem with Word "crashing" on exiting, at least with the student/home edition?
Additionally, are there plans to restore some of the lost functionality between earlier versions and Office 2008? I would very much like to move to Office 2008 (student/home)edition, but I do not want to sacrifice usability (stability) or functionality currently available.
I plan to buy Office 2008 as soon as I have confidence that I will be getting the top-notch product I would expect to get from Microsoft.

Get equations right and fix bugs!!!!
1) Fix load times. They're horrendous - even on a Quad Mac Pro.
2) Fix the equation editor. Or provide VBA support so that we can use MathType
3) Fix the bugs. Sometimes I can't select pictures in Microsoft Word - what the hell? To fix, I need to scroll up and then back down again and bingo, it works.
If you want to charge three/four times as much as your competitor (iWork), get it right, please, you're the biggest software developer in the world. Don't transfer Windows bugs to the elegant Macintosh platform.

Nevertheless, I do have serious trouble working with both, word and excel, since the programs keep on crashing constantly with my docs, even after installing both updates. Actually, the installed updates are not listed in the field "show installed updates" of the update manager.
A second drawback (you might have heard it too many times) is definitely the lacking support for macros...
Please fix the stability issues, otherwise I have to go back to other suites...

Bugs and missing features of Word 2008 (Office 2008)
There are some good new features.
But there are a few very big problems as well, which I kindly ask you to fix in one of your next updates:
1- time to launch: it got considerably longer in Office 2008 compared to Office 2004. Please note that I have the latest MacBook Pro model and still, it takes an eternity to start Word, Excel, etc.
2- spelling checker: I live in Switzerland, where there are 4 official languages and in the daily business, we happen to edit documents in english, german, french, italian. Unlike earlier versions (e.g. Office 2003 for Windows), the new Office 2008 for Mac is still not capable of automatically recognizing the language in which a document is being written. Therefore, if I move from a french document to an english one, I will see almost ALL words underlined in red (spelling errors).
This is sooo annoying! We are then always forced to keep switching the Program's language settings. Try to do this 10x per day ..!
What is even worse, just changing the language alone is still not enough. Text inserted after that moment keep to be considered in the default language (which can be different). As a consequence, in addition to changing language settings every time we switch document, we also need to reconfigure the "default" language setting every time!!
3- frequent Word 2008 crashes: I just can't believe that after all these years, in Word 2008 you still do not have the stability of the application under your firm control! Frequent program crashes! Loss of work!!
It is enough to insert some picture in a Word document, move it around a bit, add a caption and bingo! the "sorry a fatal error occurred" dialog appears. I don't remember having seen this even one single time with Adobe's applications.
By the way, Automatic Recovery works only once. If Word 2008 crashes a second time (for unknown reasons) immediately after reopening and trying to recover the document, then we are screwed up. In fact, Word 2008 will reopen a third time, but it will display a blank document!
Just after installing Office 2008, I called a friend to show him the great new features of Word. Guess what happened the very first time I fired up Word 2008 to open a document? Word froze, I had to kill it and restart it! I felt so sorry!
4- color theme: why can we change it only in Powerpoint and not in Word?
If I insert a table in my Word document by using "Quick Tables" and select the second template on the list (it comes in a green color theme), there is no simple way just to modify its color theme to -say- blue.
Also, it would be nice to have the possibility to post a table that I "personalized" on the "Quick Tables" templates list, for later use.

We need Office for Mac and generally like the product.
I'm really surprised though that Microsoft releases a software product of such a low quality level.
Stability of Mac Office 2008 is beta level at most.

Advice for Those Who Made the Mistake of Installing Excel 2008
Just pop in your original office 2004 install disc and install Excel 2004. It won't over-right excel 2008.
I chose to ONLY install Excel 2004, and deselected all other applications. But, i suppose you could do this if necessary.
Within 5 minutes of installing the previous version of excel, i've found heaven. Saved myself about 10 headaches and about 30 minutes of time!
To heck with Excel 08.

Huge problems with Office:mac 2008
1. Short Word files with text only -- not too many problems. But as soon as I enter an arrow or a speech bubble or any other graphic, I start having problems and when I go to print the document, Word hangs. I have to remove every graphic and then print.
2. Even in a short Word file, with no graphics, I have problems with formatting. When I double-click a word to highlight it, and then click "bold", ALL the text in the whole document goes bold. (Same with italic and underline.)
3. If I want to indent a paragraph and I click the right-pointing arrow in the "bullets and numbering" panel, the whole document indents! I can use "un-do" but then all the indenting (incuding the indents I want) return to the left-hand margin.
4. In long Word documents (eg. chapter of a book) very strange things happen. eg. If I delete a table, the cursor jumps to a different place in the document. Without warning, page breaks change place.
I don't have a single problem with any other software (Dreamweaver, InDesign, MYOB, Photoshop Elements, Pages, Keynote, ....)
I'm a writer, so I don't use Excel or Powerpoint very much. However, I rely on Word. All versions have been somewhat unstable, but Word 2008 is the most unreliable version I've ever had. I'm going back to my earlier version.

1. the automatic hyperlink recognition is paradoxically STILL missing. And this is the ONLY Office app lef to implement such a banal feature;
2. when adding a contact from Entourage to an addres book located in a public folder, it is not shared properly with Outlook users. I mean, in Outlook when you go and select the 'public' address book to be looked up in normal message composing, the contact added by Entourage does NOT show up correctly: it seems to have no name and only the email account. This makes contact sharing between the Mac and PC side of an Exchange-based network quite useless. Could you fix it?
As for MSN Messenger 7.0:
audio/video chat is still not available for live messenger accounts, but ONLY for Office Communications Server 2007 accounts. Which is ridiculous, indeed.
Hope the situation will improve as soon as new updates are released.

1) When I type a series of dashes across the page and then hit "return", the dashes change to a solid line all across the page. I don't want this to happen. After much angst, I finally discover the fix at: Tools>AutoCorrect>AutoFormat as You Type and then uncheck Borders. This seems odd, to call dashes and lines a Border. It would be simpler for users to call dashes and lines "dashes and lines" or something similar.
2) My default font and size are Times 16. Still, when I download material from the Internet into Word, the font and size are often different. So I need a fast way to change everything on my document to Times 16. There used to be a Record Macro function in Word 2004. But apparently Microsoft has deleted the Macro function in Word 2008. Why? Excel Page Layout View - Not WYSIWYG
The Page Layout View in the new Excel 2008 Office does not show the actual print page. For example: the Page Layout View shows late column of my spreadsheet off the 8-1/2" x 11" page. However the Print Review show the all the columns on one page as they should be.
Is there some way I can get the Page Layout View to show the actual layout of the printed page.
Several people in my office have which back to the old Excel version because Page Layout View work in the older Excel by not the 2008 Office version.
Any help will be greatly appericated.
