I haven't tried removing Office yet, reinstalling, and reapplying SP1.

SP1 install and double clicking on documents

Since installing SP1, double clicking on documents downloaded from a web server, or attached to an email no longer open them in the office program, although default behaviours are set properly in the web browser and email client. The only way to open these docs is to save them on disk and open them from File > Open.

Once Saved or Saved as, these docs again open when double clicking

Cannot open downloaded docs

I downloaded the recent update on 5/15. Now Word will not open Word docs downloaded from the internet. Text Edit opens the docs just fine, so I know it is not the sites or the docs themselves that is the issue. Any help?

imac excel problem after sp1

since installing Office 2008 SP1 have been unable to open a significant number of excel files that previously were working normally on excel 2008 for mac. problem occurred on two identical imacs (2.4 GHz, core Duo 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) purchased late in 2007, but not on a 3-yr old G4 powerbook also running office 2008 SP1, i.e. the same files excel files continued to open fine on the PB. After removing office 2008 from imac & re-installing office 2008 from original CD, the excel files all opened normally, but failed to open after agin installing SP1 on the imacs.

Any suggestions or hope for a fix, or should I just dump SP1 & go back to original office 2008?

Office Will Not Run After SP1

I installed SP1 Tuesday. Today, Office will not start and I receive an error message and when it tries to relaunch, the same thing happens.
I tried installing SP1 again today, downloading it again and now it will not install, saying, "You cannot install Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) on this volume. A version of the software required to install the update was not found on this volume."

Secure connection with Exchange server

After installing SP1 Entourage displays the following message every time is launched:

"Unable to establish a secure connection to xxxx.xxx because the server name or IP address does not match the name or IP address on the server's certificate. If you continue, the information you view and send will be encrypted, but will not be secure"

It is annoying! Encryption is not enabled in our exchange accounts. Why are we getting this message then? Please Microsoft: don't overdo the security issue with unnecesary and annoying messages like this every time the application is open.

Problems Opening Spreadsheets with Multiple Sheets with Excel After SP1

After installing SP1, Excel would not open encrypted (password protected) spreadsheets containing multiple sheets (15 or more). Password protected spreadsheets containing one sheet will open. I get no warning with the multiple sheets, just no display of my file.

The Fix after Installing SP1

I installed SP1, and afterwards nothing worked except Word (still as 12.0.1). I tried many things, but what finally worked was:
1. Remove Office 2008
2. Install Office 2008
3. Repair the Office database
4. Install SP1

Believe it or not, all of my preferences, etc were still there!

Opening documents after SP1

On an Intel Mac running OSX10.5.2, double clicking a Word document, and dragging a Word document to the Word icon in the dock switches to Word but the document does not open. Using the file>open command will open the same documents.

importing jpeg picture files to Word

When I create a picture in Photoshop and save as a jpg, I cannot import this file into Word Mac 2008. I always get an error that Word cannot read the file. Tried saving as tif and got the same error message. Tried saving a jpg that was created on a PC version of Photoshop, and got the same error message. I think the problem is in Word 2008. Any suggestions welcome.

After installing SP1 last night, it updated the user data and everything is working fine so far. I would have liked to see some improvement in Entourage, both in terms of speed and the overall layout hardly and improvement over 2004

Major Entourage issue (corrupt database)

So - I installed the SP1. No errors - no problems. Except... Except that entourage mentions that my database (about 2 GB) is corrupted and wants me to use the Database utility. Used several times - database successfully rebuilt. Compacted. Whatever. Rebuilt. Re-compacted. All the time same message, when I open Entourage - "Cannot open file - use Database Utility"). Everytime when I compact the database - it says it compacted/repaired it well. No errors found.

I do have a backup of the database that is one month old - but obviously I would like to retrieve the emails that I received in between.

Do you have a database utility that extracts the emails? That... would be a life saver.

And all this happened AFTER the SP1 install. Are there any known glitches?

Word crashes on closing documents

I earlier reported that Word was crashing when I closed any document. A careful check of all components revealed that the Office updater failed to update the Word component. A reinstallation (thank you, people) rectified this, and the problem was cured.

Office 2008 SP1 Install problems

I cannot install this update (12.1.0), nor the previous one (12.0.1). Always I get the message part way through the installation process: "You cannot install Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) on this volume. A version of the software required to install the update was not found on this volume."

I have tried several methods to make it work - reinstalling office with and without first removing it, repairing permissions, etc. At least Office 12.0.0 works well.

.docx & .xlsx documents

I am getting .docx and .xlsx documents that open as 'Text Edits' and 'Numbers' docs accordingly. This is annoying as i do not have Office 2008 and will not buy it until it is debugged.

I am told that the Mactopia site has a download that will automatically convert these into .doc and ,xls files without losing the formatting.

Does anyone know where this is and how I identify it there? Or other solution?

Office 2008 - double clicking fails

Hi there,

You've probably been notified by others but since SP1 double clicking documents (Excel, Word and Powerpoint) that were CREATED on Windows versions of Office - in my case Office 2003 - fails to open the document. What happens is that a blank document opens, and you are forced to search open them from within Office. Documents created on a Mac open flawlessly.

Have tried a number of fixes suggested on forums such as MacFixit but the problem persists.

Back to Office 2004 until you release a fix.

Office 2008 SP 1 breaks Entourage

Word, Powerpoint and Excel appear to work but Entourage and the Microsoft Database Daemon use up 100% of my CPU and stop responding after 2-3 minutes. This means 4-5 of my Hundreds of e-mails get downloaded (maybe).
I have reloaded office 2008 from the original disk and attempted to upgrade only back to version 12.0.1 but the system does not think the version on my machine is upgradable. I have tried to run Entourage on the rebuilt database but it informs me that it can not use this version of the data base. I need a way too get back to the version just before service pack 1 was released! OR Microsoft needs to immediately fix these mission critical applications.

Word/Excel sluggish

Working in both Word and Excel has been a little tough since installing SP1 last week.

I get the spinning beach ball frequently. I thought the issue might have been my font cache but after clearing my font caches, both apps are not performing as well as they did before the update.

Any thoughts?

2 bugs

1. In Entourage:
     - create a New Messsage
     - Insert > Picture
       - some Pictures cannot be embedded (or, at least, do not render). The small ones I tried worked. The larger ones did not work.

2. Excel cannot open a file a file that was password protected. Two other files opened off-screen, but appeared when I placed the cursor in the formula bar.

I have just updated with SP1 and registered online and none of my Office applications will open it just seems that it is stuck in a loop and starts the set up assistant again. I have tried to contact Microsoft only to get automated machines. HELP!

Could we have the open dialog for adding attachments in Entourage remember size/position settings in a future update?

SP1 has been a good update for me. It even seems to have addressed the Excel zoom system lockup issue, for which I was waiting on OS X 10.5.3, which seems determined not to arrive.

Once SP1 was installed, users can no longer open documents directly from Lotus Notes. Also, you can not even open them if you drag the document out of Lotus Notes onto the desktop. The only way to open it is by opening Word and then the document. Has anyone tried uninstalling? Does this work?.....

Office 2008 SP1 will not install

Similar to the issue with the 12.0.1 update,
SP! will not install and issues this error:

Office is in APPs folder, unmodified, correct rights, etc.

Out of Office - Exchange 2007 Woes

Ever since moving to Exchange 2007, Entourage 2008 will not "auto-discover" account information correctly (free/busy errors) and Out of Office no longer works. I saw where SP1 was supposed to fix the Out of Office issue, but that didn't work.

Double-clicking problem

I confirm the problem reported by others.

After the update it isn't possible to open some files by double-clicking. Some are fine and will open this way, but many won't. The problem is definitely to do with the SP1 update: I have tried the same files on another Mac that hasn't been updated yet and the files open just fine.

This is a step backwards.

Dealing with Identity

When I try to install Office 2008 for Mac on a second Mac in the next room used by my wife, it will not accept one of the three extra product key numbers. With the same identify number on both computers we cannot use Office 2008 simultaneously!

Problems on Opening Office Files from Windows

From Help and How-To Top 5 Support Issues, Issue 1, Microsoft is obviously aware of the problems opening many office files by clicking on them. If you get a lot of Office attachments in email or from web site, the suggested work around:

1. download the attachment
2. open the appropriate Office application
3. from the application's file menu, open command, open the saved attachment.
4. save the attachment.

From then on you can open the saved attachment. Of course, you still can't open the attachment by double-clicking it in the email.

Does anyone know why Microsoft is taking so long to send out a fix for this very annoying bug that seems like it should be easy to fix?

OFFICE 2008 (WORD AND EXCEL) WILL NOT OPEN FILES FROM FINDER

After installing SP1, neither Word nor Excel will open files previously created in compatibility mode (Office X, 2004) or by a previous version of the software by double-clicking or dragging the file onto the icon in the toolbar.
I have tried rebuilding LaunchServices (using the free utility OnyX), logging out, and then in again, and subsequently re-associating Word Office 2008 with one of the affected Word files (and selecting Apply to all), but this will not fix the problem.
I have to open the file(s) from within Word, and re-save the file for opening from the Finder to work again for this particular file(s).

SP1 and the lost double click

Since this is the No. 1 issue on the Help and How-To page, I don't need to report any more details (my problem is also with Lotus Notes). I do have one question - can I sign up for an automatic notification that this problem has been solved, and a patch created, so I do not have to keep returning to this page or will this fix be loaded into an update that will be detected at launch of the programs?

Console Errors persist!

Microsoft Word 2008 SP1 installed, running OS X 10.5.2. I constantly get errors in the form:

PROBLEMS ON OPENING FILES

I just created a report and saved it then went to open and nothing? I used Pages to open no problem! Why have something that does not work... I hoped that this new word would be like the 2007 word for pc but to no avail only problems like my pc.
Please fix or I will be forced to move all of my work over to Pages or Open Office.I teach comp apps and we use MS Office but will use something else.

NEED ENTOURAGE SUPPORT

There was a 2004 Entourage feature that was well used and highly valuable, that is not supported in the 2008 Entourage version. This feature is greatly missed and was a great asset in the fast-paced business world in which we live. I'm referring to email flagging. In v. 2004, when you moved a flagged email from your inbox to a more specific folder, a flag would show up to the right of the folder, indicating that there is a message in that folder that has been flagged for review.

spellchecker causes processor workload of 100% using word

The german microsoft hotline told me that the german spellchecher causes the high processor workload and the slow performance of word. SP 1 didn´t change anything.

Good job on SP1! But still some more too go...

- nice improvement on word, excel and powerpoint! Faster, more stable and less errors!

suggestions for more improvement:

- word is still freezing sometimes (f.ex. graphics in notebook view)
- graphics compression in word and powerpoint (like in office 2007)!
-more compatibility between docx (Office 2007) and docx (Office 2008), the math formulars and the edited graphics are still screwed up when using both Office 2007 and 2008 with docx,xlxx,pptx on the same file.
- and please bring back the VBA as soon as possible!

Entourage crashing 3 times a day since update

Every time, I make sure I click "send report". Who knows, they've probably got 100 copies of the same report by now.

Regardless, E2008 was perfect *before* I updated. Well, buggy, didn't display right on 2nd monitors, had blank gaps for group titles, lots of other things, but it didn't crash!

Now, none of those bugs are fixed, but I get the added feature of thrice-daily crashing!

How do I uninstall all of Office/Entourage, without losing my prefs/rules/folders/accounts, and re-install it so I can make a point of *not* applying the service pack?

BU? Any hints on this?

Entourage Will Not Open

When I try to open Entourage, the My Day app crashes and I get message that it can't be opened and sent report, the Reminders trys to open and crashes and I get message that it can't be opened and sent report, the same thing happens after that when I try to continue to open Entrouage! I've tried everything from rebuilding the database to using the M/S How to troubleshoot programs in ..Office 2008 for Mac. I've removed M/S Office and reinstalled it three CONSUMING times, to no avail. I can't get my e-mail or calendar events. BU, NOW what do I do????

Excel slow to launch and function

After applying SP1, Excel launch and performance has degraded greatly. Launch may take 30 seconds and cell input lags behind keystrokes. Suggestions?

Still annoying bug of window resizing when displaying several documents

Since MS Office 2004 there is a very boring bug in Excel when displaying 2 documents or more in full screen, the one in background has its window resized completely tiny, so if you want to compare them on 2 monitors or using exposé you always to resize the other one first !
it is incredibly boring after 1 day of work believe me ! and this is still existing in 2008 and has never never been corrected.

Even after new update 12.1.1 powerpoint still doesn't convert ppt to pptx correctly, slides lose images. works with 2007 not 2008. I can convert with 2007 save as pptx then it opens okay with 2008. Please fix

Shift comma doesn't work

In absolutely ANY softwares of Mac OS X, the combination of key <SHIFT ,> on the numerical pad of the keyboard should write a dot. But it doesn't work in MS Excel 2004 and 2008 which ALWAYS write a comma instead. No problem in the other MS Office softwares.
