MS Office 2008 for Mac : Office 2007 compatibility
I've been using Windows & Office for many years. I'm about to buy an IMAC and Office 2008. Therefore, I'm wondering if it's now possible to migrate PST's files toward Entourage 2008's files automatically.
Have you already tried this manipulation?
Thanks for your support.

What!?!?: No Macros????
But thankfully I saw before it was too late that MACROS ARE NOT SUPPORTED!!!
One of the reasons I have not switched to another spreadsheet app is that although buggy, Excel has great programmability. I use this with nearly every spreadsheet I make, sometimes spending a day or so programming things that will save me far more time later.
Also it means that using automation, I can get less skilled operatives to carry out tasks that i would normally have to do myself... Therefore more productivity.
So what do I do now? I'm NOT gong to go down the windows route, although I still need to use excel files on a PC.
Why has such an incredibly useful functionality been discarded. Would I really have to reprogram all that work in applescript? Will applescript have the same functionality that VBA had? I am not talking about merely recording a macro...
To my mind, excel can now only be at best, half the application it used to be. Or have I missed something?
Very disappointed...

Entourage 2008 Exchange Support?
We bought Mac Office vX back when it was released for OS X (2001?). I work for a WA State agency. I was anxious to give Entourage a try but it would not connect to our office's Exchange Server. I was using Outlook 2001 in classic mode during this time and by simply filling out the few fields in the opening dialog window I connected flawlessly to the server. I tried the same thing with Entourage vX with no luck and after numerous other attempts I finally resorted to contacting the MS MacBU for help. After 2 weeks of their help, and nothing resolved, they finally told me that Entourage xV was not the same as Outlook 2001 and that they were sorry for the disappointment and to continue using Outlook 2001. Entourage was removed.
When Mac Office 2004 came around I tried to see if things changed and was once again disappointed to find out about the Entourage Exchange support. Mac Office 2004 was not purchased.
Currently we are still using Outlook 2001 under classic mode with OS X 10.4.11, the LAST app we use Classic for. We would like to upgrade to Intel Mac hardware but it doesn't support Classic mode. We are crossing our fingers that this version of Entourage will answer our pleads!
So my questions is, will Entourage 2008 connect to our Exchange server the same, simple way that classic Outlook 2001 does?
After all, its only been 7 years of pleading with you guys.

Can we import pdf vector-based graphics
I am a scientist and I produce a lot of vector-based graphics. In OS 9's days, these were usually vector-based pict. But for the last many years (since OS X has arrived) pdf is the default vector-based graphics format. PowerPoint and Word imported these but automatically transformed the in the raster format, png. Worse yet, PowerPoint made them in low res png images that were too ugly to show to other scientists. Word was a bit less bad. In practice it was best to use other software to translate pdfs into pngs before inserting into Word and PowerPoint (or use other software for word processing and presentations). What about Office 2008? I mean, pdf has been the official graphic format on Mac OS X for years now, it must be possible to import them without translating them in something else? Please say yes!

Re: It's Here: Office 2008 for Mac
In Excel, I use the keyboard exclusively. I hate having to reach for the mouse. This means that when I scroll I for the most part use the arrow keys. I've set the system pref for fastest repeat rate.
When Office v.X came out on 10.1, scrolling this way was dog slow. It helped a bit to kill the formula bar, but not enough. It slowly improved with each OS release, and with Office 2004 it was pretty zippy. Yay. It looked as if the formula bar didn't update with each scroll "tick", which helped.
Even on a MacBook 2Ghz Core Duo, under Rosetta, scrolling this way was pretty zippy. Certainly acceptably so.
In Excel 2008, a universal binary, I was expecting that at worst it would be as fast as 2004 under rosetta on an intel mac. For scrolling in Excel using the keyboard, it isn't - it's slow again. Virtually everything else in Office 2008 feels speedier (including Word scrolling), but in Excel keyboard scrolling is way too slow again. Almost Numbers slow (but not quite). This really slows makes working with Excel a more frustrating experience for me.
Please, please, please! Machines these days have so much comparative horsepower - surely this can be remedied and we can back to Office 98 scroll speeds on G3s?

, and I am eligible for the Super Suite Deal. I am trying to decide which edition of 2008 I should upgrade to. I only have one computer, which I sometimes use for work - which is a Windows environment.
Quick questions: What is Exchange server support, and why would I want / need it?
Are automator actions like macros? Again, how do I know if I need them?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Office 2008 should join its Windows cousins on MSDN
I appreciate that there might not be any plans at the moment, but I think that's a mistake or oversight. So I would like this escalated as a request or feedback.
It's undeniable that the Mac install base is growing and Microsoft licenses allow for platform-transferability. Current Macs are of course capable of running Windows XP or Vista now too. Many of our customers expect to have Office installed on both Operating Systems. There's going to be a growing interest in being able to test and develop with Office 2008 for Mac in addition to the Windows versions of Office. Entourage as an Exchange client is also a growing market within various Enterprises as interest in the Mac grows to have Exchange integration. Microsoft should be at the forefront of this.
In my mind it doesn't make any sense that the MBU (Mac Business Unit) products are not available to MSDN Subscribers, excluding Virtual PC for Mac which is already there. At the end of the day it serves to promote the software and perhaps help boost sales for Microsoft. Get those Windows-only subscribers to take notice, get a Mac and try out the Mac version... as well as install Windows on their new Mac too. lol.
It can't be difficult for this to be acheived. If a beta testing programme can run for this software, easily providing product keys, it can be a great leap for it to be published to MSDN Subscribers or even just Microsoft Partners; Gold or otherwise. Partners should be given Volume License keys in-line with their existing rights to use the Windows versions of Office.
Thanks.

Exchange Support
We've been happy with Office 2004 (and now 2008) for some time. Perhaps you tried an early release of Office 2004. Since version 11.2 (Service Pack 2) the Exchange support improved greatly. We've been running version 11.3.x for a long time and it functions very similarly to Outlook 2003 and 2007. I would never go back to Outlook 2001 as it functioned like Outlook 2000 and both require constant contact with the server often leading to hangs. 2008 is only going to make Exchange use even smoother. Ok, we still don't get access to out-of-office and Server-side rules, but those are small losses. Mail, Calendars and Contacts work perfectly.

what about syncing with Blackberry - a basic biz need
During those 4 years did even one of you (even on one of those sticky notes) ever consider for just a nano second that as Office is primarily a business app (the name is a clue - duh) and that just about everyone in biz uses a PDA that they sync to their computer (calendar & contacts) on at least a daily basis, that it might be a GOOD IDEA to ensure that this would continue to occur after updating to 2008, especially for Blackberry.
Who cares about making prettier pictures when you can't sync - people just won't upgrade. I made a big mistake upgrading & am going back to 2004.

Great product but why are Office 2007 and Office 2008 so different and I cannot register it
Also noticed your web site does not accept the product ids generated by Office 2008. (And I was on the correct web site...).
Notice some funny formating bugs when importing some rtf and Office 2007 docx files. Cleared if I saved and reopened. Nice product though.

Both Contacts and Calendar synchronize w/Exchange so why wouldn't Tasks and Notes? I wanted to get rid of Outlook and use Entourage only which would synchronize everything to the Exchange server then to my Blackberry. Now I still have to run Parallels w/Windows XP! Maybe that's why they didn't include Tasks and Notes. Please explain why this is the case.

VBA Removal - Mixed Environment Perspective
The removal of VBA from Microsoft Office 2008 for Macintosh was and is a really BIG mistake.
I would have prefered you held off on this version until it was avalable since I have to use and support VBA based Excel application.
The result of this is that there will be NO upgrades of Microsoft Office in my company and several of our clients until this ESSENTIAL cross-platform capability is included in Microsoft Office for Macintosh.
NO, Applescript is NOT acceptable because it is NOT cross-platform either.
This even affects me at home since I use simple macros in spreadsheets for tracking personal finances. I guess I'll have to stop using Excel and use some other tool like Quicken.
I really feel like a second class citizen since Internet Explorer for Mac, Windows Media Player for Macintosh, and now VBA has been dropped.
OpenOffice is looking more and more like a viable alternative with the continued shortcuts and short changing the Mac users are getting in Microsoft Office 2008.
Sorry to complain so much because I really feel that you folks in the MBU are trying as hard as you can with the resources you are given.

Love it! However, synchronizing with Exchange Server is a drag when there are several mailboxes that have to update. As a matter of fact, several times a day I get the pin wheel for several minutes while the two synchronize.
Does the new version still synchronize the same way or has it been changed to act more like Outlook on a PC? Any info here would be greatly appreciated.

Entourage 2008 and Exchange server 2003
I had Office 2004 installed since a couple of weeks and was amazed at the fact that I could not recuperate the groups, notes and tasks I had created on my Exchange account in Outlook 2007. I was hoping this would be solved in 2008. But...
Did I do something wrong in the installation ? I can get my mail, corporate Exchang contacts; but, if I understand correctly, the only way to create a group is in 'My contacts' and not on my account on exchange. I can do that in Office 2007 or Outlook Web access, but not in 2008 ??
Same thing with the tasks and notes.
Another strange behavior I encountered this morning; I can open a document on our 2003 server, but not save to it. I always get a message that 'the document cannot be found' , then Excel saves it and I cannot save it again. Strange, very strange. I will try to connect to our server through our wi-fi service instead of our wired based server to see if that behavior still persists.
If I had known, since I am an outsider in our office due to the fact that I use a mac, I think I would have stayed with 2004.

Exchange Support
Thank you for the response. I took your word for it and ordered Mac Office 2008. I just installed it and was unable to get it to create an "automatic" Exchange account so I tried the manual setup. After inputting all my account settings Entourage started to sync up with our server. It automatically imported all my emails into there appropriately named folders. Needless to say I was jazzed. My address book entries imported but the info was incorrectly moved around into the wrong fields. No problem, I'm used to fixing my address book contacts every time our IT updates our Outlook program on our PC.
I can't seem to figure out the following. I don't seem to have a Global Address List nor do I have any Calendar entries. I tried to follow the Help Menus Exchange setup for these things but it starts me out by going to the Global Address List which should appear under the Directory Services, which it doesn't. So I looked under these subjects in the help menu and it said something about needing LDAP. I looked on the PC in my Outlook account and I think our address book is using something with the type MAPI. Does this make sense? I'm stumped with trying to get my calendar and Global addresses working. I'd appreciate some help. Thanks

A *real* full screen - nothing but the page and a clear head
There are different stages to producing a document, and the new Word is better than ever at supporting editing and formatting. Thanks! But please, one or two tweaks and you could do a lot to support the *writing* stage!

Excel 2008 vs. 2004?
Is this a new feature, or am I missing something significant? So far, I think I will need to stick with Office 2004, as it appears to be the faster and more reliable solution for my needs.
Can't comment much about Word and Powerpoint yet.

Disapointed
It is supposed to be an Intel native version, but it is so so slow ......
Even on a G5 ...
It is simple the old MS Office X of November 2001 is a Ferrari compared to the 2008 ! Knowing that it will also run in Rosetta mode on an Intel Mac !
So I have request for refund because the cosmetics changes are not enough, we were waiting for more than his, plus it is even not supporting complex scripts languages requestest since the MS Office X version of 2001 !

Mac Office 2008 has some very serious bugs
1. Excel does not retain all formatting in graphics. When I create a pie chart, for example, the formatting to the text will sometimes be lost when after the document is saved, lost and re-opened.
2. I pasted text from one document to another in Word and completely different data was pasted.
3. Switching to calendar mode in Entourage takes 60-70 seconds the first time this is done after Entourage is opened. Switching to the calendar "speeds up" to only 25-30 seconds after the calendar is opened a few times.
4. Reviews indicated that Office 2008 would be faster than Office 2004 because the former is a Universal application. Perhaps after the first major upgrade this will be the case.
On balance, Office 2008 is a significant disappointment and was clearly released too early -- I had expected better from Microsoft. I would strongly recommend that anyone considering purchasing Office 2008 wait at least three months to do so.

New Office for Mac without Developer functionality
Problems with Office 2008
Entourage is not Outlook compatible (WHY)
Developers can not write Macros or VBA (WHY)
Messenger does not match Messenger for Windows (WHY)
No project for Mac (Probably Mac users do not work on projects)
No Visio for Mac (Probably we do not need that tool Neither)
Access for Mac (What for? Mac people are stupid)
Office for Mac (It should be totally discarded maybe than some other company will do a better job knowing that they do not need to compete with Microsoft's marketing machine)
I would like to know why Mac users are second class citizens for Microsoft when Apple is actually the second largest computing company.
Thanks for making me feel unwanted.

this website design stinks
2: the body text column (center) is fixed width. It should expand and shrink with the window size like the http://blogs.msdn.com/macmojo/
3: default font is tiny. Increasing the font makes it like reading an 8 column newspaper. very annoying.
4: five comments per page!? How do you follow a thread like that?

When are some of the basic fixes going to be released?
Today’s lesson learned is the BlackBerry can no longer be synced with the Entourage, even using Pocket Mac.. .
It appears your old users are being disappointed by the missing old features..
My thought was this would be an improvement and upgrade from the 2004 version of Office.. Every day seems to lead down a road of something missing or changed.
It appears that you all really were not ready for the launch of Office 2008.. Can you refund us our money until it is ready, or can you get some of the old features back in place and make this a real upgrade quickly?
And surely some of the items being mentioned the loudest are not that hard to fix if they were in the older version..
This is a time where real customer service says own up to your mistakes, give us a plan for the fixes, or give us our money back. I will come back when you are really ready to give us the new and better version.. Surely our support through the years means something to some you all..
Look forward to when you will be ready for a real product release, or at least some of the fixes..

PowerPoint 2008 Needs a Lot of Work
(1) If a document is from the PC 2007, there are major issues. Charting is a challenge. Just doubleclicking to open data window, the whole chart updates its look, you can't copy data between sheets, effects seem to disappear on text, and white background is not removable. If you create from scratch right in 2008, you have a better chance but you still can't copy data from Excel over.
(2) Too many master pages gets VERY confusing. It could be a nice feature if you could view the master as a pop-up while you're still on your normal-view page would be a big benefit, otherwise, I think for the average user this would just be too much of a hassle to decipher.
(3) Pick Up Object Style and Apply Object Style just do not work. Apply Object Style stays grayed out no matter what you do. That feature is IMPERATIVE in the work I do. The format painter just does not cut it. It's much harder to work with than the Pick Up and Apply object features. I'm sad this feature does not work even though they are available to put in the custom toolbar.
(4) In custom animation, the custom animation box does not stay open for more than one slide. If having to custom animate multiple slides, this can be a huge problem. I know you can see it on the panel on the right, but it's too conglomerated to work with. I have been looking for simple line spacing for a week and finally found it under text format somewhere embedded.
(5) I customized my toolbars just to open a second document to have them revert to what they were originally. This was not the case in lower versions of ppt.
(6) Font effects don't view properly going from 2007 to 2008. They only look right when you doubleclick to edit the text, then when you're off the box the stroke does its own thing.
I know this is the first version of 2008 but I was hoping it would be a little less painless. When I worked on the PC side in 2007, I didn't have any of these issues. I'm a Mac person normally, but not when it comes to Microsoft products -- they just don't cut it I'm afraid . . . at least not yet.

WORD DOESN´T DO FILE - OPEN.WHERE IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN APPLE AND MICROSOFT ?
1- Word didn´t work properly : in the "file /open" command. My Imac - a new one, intel based - crashes, and its necessary to "force quit" to leave the "work" software and start again Imac´s OS ( Leopard ) .
2-This happens even after uninstalled and installed again the Office software.
3-Since this problem started, I sent , through the internal comunication system , a lot of information to Apple , without any feedback until now.
4-I have the worst opinion about Microsoft quality and how it deals with his clients. For this reason and much more, I changed to Apple , hoping that the way that Apple deals with his clients should be quite different than Microsoft .
5-Until now , I´m waiting an answer to the above mentioned problem.
6 -At this moment , I 'm convinced that there is no significant difference comparing Apple and Microsoft! . Both are the same thing - and very bad - in what concerns the direct communication !
7- May I have some help to my problem, that is not a big problem but shows that lack of quality of Microsoft products even for Apple's hardware ?

Marketing Screwup
All of the confusion and hostility could have so easily been avoided. Now my 'ideal world' self wants to say "...by ensuring that Entourage had 100% feature compatibility with Outlook 2003 (never mind 2007)".
However, I work in IT and have a somewhat more realistic view of things.
I've read comments by MacBU developers saying that they had to prioritise what features went in. And much as I believe, from reading various posts and comments, that every single only-in-Outlook feature needs to be added right now, I know that this is not at all realistic.
(Although part of the problem IS that people who need any compatibility with the Windows Office suite need COMPLETE compatibility)
However...
Owing to this, everything needs to be completely transparent. Stuff NDAs. Stuff leaving everything to some fancy press launch. People were desperate for this information last summer, and if it had been given then by the actual release date a lot of the worst of the vitriol would have been easily avoided.
We need to know what works. We need to know what doesn't. We need to know what'd next in the "To Add" queue, and what is down the bottom.
Ask ten different users which Exchange-compatible function is on their "must have" list and you'll likely get ten different answers. Worse still, those ten people could easily all be in the same company/department. (Hence all ten could be the difference between that organisation signing up for a volume licensing deal or going elsewhere)
So the only way to keep all ten people willing to stick with Office:Mac is if they have a realistic idea of when/if things are coming. Even missing features can be worked around, given the time and forewarning.
Remember...
DOCX compatibility and Intel-native were one-shots. This release was necessarily for those two factors, even for people who were disappointed by other missing features. But I think MS lost a big amount of respect and mindshare here because not only were features missed out, the full feature list wasn't officially released until pretty much the release date.
Enough is enough. All we really want is the missing features, and a roadmap of when to expect them. That's all I've been asking for since last summer and, from the looks of things, all others have been asking for since Office 2004 was first released.
The MacBU developers obviously poured heart and soul into this version, and someone up in marketing instead turned it into a potential PR nightmare.

Mac Expo MS Experience
So, my conclusion is, Wow look at the new calendar in Entourage! Oh and now we have OOF support. Big deal!
My goal at Expo was now to find an alternate to MS. I think I might go with Zimbra, which can be a bit slow given it is a Web App, but has all the features I need.
For my spreadsheet and document items I might try one of the open office items or turn to Apple with iWorks. Apple could actually have an opportunity here by creating some better "business" apps after this Office 08 disappointment.
Too bad that the one piece of software (Entourage) didn't get half the attention it should have gotten for this upgrade.

Ridiculous canadian prices!
I've seen most copies go for ~400$ in the US (online), none are allowed to ship to Canada due to "manufacturer restrictions".
All versions that can be shipped to Canada cost 550$+ (even on amazon.ca)... WHAT GIVES? The canadian dollar has been at par with or stronger than the greenback for nearly a year now - why should we pay a 37.5% premium on top by artificially restricting purchases from across the border?
What a ripoff.
If anyone at MS marketing is listening: Here's a clue - we can do math, too.
I'll just keep my 37.5% premium, the actual 400$ purchase price, and my dignity to myself thank you very much.

Excel 2008 issues
Vlookups are taking FOREVER! Hitting 'escape' once a vlookup is complete usually results in excel crashing.
Calculating cells also takes FOREVER. The color wheel shows up every time I attempt a copy/paste special values (regardless of size). It seems as though excel recalculates before it can do this basic copy/paste function.
Everything seems to be taking much longer with the new version of excel. Also frustrating is the fact that you don't get a percentage of calculated cells unless you click inside the active spreadsheet. This will show you a percentage, but then starts the calculation back at the beginning.
On a bright note, to do an all item export, I don't have to split the data into two groups.

New to Mac
Based on my own research on this Blog, Amazon.com customer review, and Google searches, I'm wondering if Office '08 is all it's cracked up to be. It appears there are crashes, the software slows the system down, and other issues. What are the benefits of Office '08 over iWork? I haven't made a decision yet -- but want to make sure I don't overspend on something that I'll be disappointed with.
Thanks.

Entourage 2004 through Exchange
We use Entourage 11.3.6 in our corporate Exchange environment with a few drawbacks. The scheduling doesn't work as well as it did in 2001 (Classic). We also don't have "verify/read" receipts, but that's not a make/break for us.
We've been using this for a few years with consistent results. I'm hoping for better integration in the 08 upgrade.
