Thanks to all for sharing your feedback on RDC updates, today we released RDC Beta3 replacing RDC beta2, extending the beta period through the final release of RDC 2. You will no longer see a pop-up beta expiration message. The download is available here.

In addition to the updated expiration, you will also notice many improvements in the new build. I will point out a couple of major updates and let you discover the rest on your own. Beta3 includes a full set of Help topics, available through the new Help Viewer. The Help Viewer will be able to look online for the latest updates to content, just like Office 2008 for Mac’s Help Viewer. RDC support of non-English keyboards and languages has been implemented for French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch, and Japanese. The RDC user interface and Help topics are also fully localized for these languages.

As part of these updates, we are also re-examining the final release version of RDC 2. Originally, in order to get RDC out sooner, we were planning on removing the ability to double click on RDP files to launch an RDC session. When this feature stopped working properly after the Beta 2 timeout, the feedback on this blog and in other online forums helped us decide that it wasn’t worth cutting to be done sooner. So we kept it, scheduled additional testing and will have the final release this summer. Beta3 will be available through the release of the final version. Stay tuned for updates.

When are we able to copy images back and forth

I use a system for work that requires me to copy an image out of photoshop and paste it into our database system on the remote server. Currently I have to save the image in a shared folder on my computer, then go to the remote desktop app and then copy it to the desktop (or somewhere on the server) then open it in paint (cause microsoft image viewer doesn't allow me to select all and copy) select all then copy and then paste into our database program.

Is there any roadmap for rich clipboard support! I really would like to save myself and my co-workers some time to work on other things! After all time is money!

Installation problem

I'm unable to install the new Beta. I either get "The Installer could not create the folder "/Applications/Remote Desktop Connection.app", or "The Installer could not creaet the folder "/private/tmp/Remote Desktop Connection.pkg.randomalphanumerics".

The first time I tried installing, I hadn't uninstalled the Beta 2 version. Now the Beta 2 is uninstalled and I am still getting the errors. Has anybody else experienced this?

Keyboard problems

I've installed beta3 and I cannot use my keyboard anymore after pressing the ALT key.
All keys act in an unexpected way, and also the mouse behave in a strange way.
I'm using a Macbook Pro with Ita-pro keyboard layout.
I was forced to switch back to beta2, which works perfectly... (except for I cannot find the \ | key)

Excel Sheets

I want to be able to color my sheet TABS like I use to be able to do in my PC versions of Microsoft Office. This small but useful tool helps to differentiate several sheets in one workbook and makes it easier to locate and switch between sheets. WHY is this tool NOT incorporated into Microsoft Office for Mac? Is there anyway I can use this tool in my Microsoft Office for Mac? I am so hoping that Microsoft will accomdated those of us that love those small, wonderful tools found in Microsoft Office for PC's into our Microsoft Office for Mac. I am such a devoted Microsoft Office FAN!

RDP and smart card logon

Hello,
I'm the administrator of a big IT farm.
I use a mac and .. of course I administer about 20 WIN server.
Last I installed a smart card logon system based on a Aladdin token and a certificate authority.
Unfortunatly the smart card logon is not supported by this RDP version, right ?
Have You a plan for this feature ?

2.0 Still Doesn't Respect Primary Mouse Button

This latest RDC 2.0 beta still doesn't respect the "Primary Mouse Button" setting in the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane on the Mac. I have my mouse buttons swapped as I use my mouse with my left hand (so my primary click is a right-click and a secondary click is a left-click), but when I connect to a Windows computer, the primary click is the left-click and the secondary click is the right-click.

New RDC beta more welcome than you could ever know!

Oh my God, a new RDC. On first impressions it is rather great as well. I have upgraded, customised and resaved all my rdp links so that I can log into any of my servers with a double click. Excellent idea by the way to integrate with the keychain and use the features built into OSX for secure passwords.

That is more like it... Very good, very fast.

One of the reasons Mac users hold Apple in such high regard is that they seem to listen to their users and build exactly what the users want. This has in the past been a criticism of Microsoft in general, in that they don’t seem to listen. Well done to the MacBU for listening to its users and building exactly what we want. The backslash key now works as well.

Impressive..... Most impressive.

P.S. I was surprised to read that MacBU were thinking of dropping the highly useful feature of being able to double click on a custom rdp file to launch a remote session. Glad to see this vital feature still exists in RDC. Removing that would have generated a large number of complaints.

Fantastic, you have made my (and many other Mac users) day!

Now if only there was a bug fix for office 2008 and spaces, I’d be ecstatic and would have to go and have a lay down in a darkened room.

Be careful - I'm no longer able to log in

After updating to beta 3, I can't log in any more to the remote server. It seems that my password is encoded the wrong way or so. Using RDC 1.0.3, I can log in normally with same user-name and password. Maybe its al German problem only…

Why didn't run again the "| \" or "< >" key (the same was in the previous version) ?

RDC is a very good tools to work in hybrid companies environment (Windows and Mac OS). But there is a noising troubleshooting: the "| \" key (in the Italian keyboard layouts) or the "< >" key (in the USA keyboard layouts) don't run anyway. The key is placed on the top left corner of the keyboard (just under the ESC key). In both the keyboard layout cases, there are not way to obtain the characters I have indicated ( | and \ , or > and <), never by using some keys combination. If this issue should be resolved, the product will be very useful.

Alt-Tab problem?

Am I the only one? I have 5 RDCB3 running against a W2003S and can't use Alt-Tab to switch W applications any more. No problem with B1 and B2.

Printing Not workin

I updated to Version 3, and while Windows sees my XEROX PHASER 6120 Printer, the job goes to the Mac Queue and stops. It will not print. This is a simple Outlook 2003 Mail document in plain text.

I actually doubted this would happen but well done, you've proved me wrong and regained my confidence in Microsoft and the MacBU team. Just wanted to say thanks.

So I've been using CoRD ever since the beta2 expired and while I'll be switching back to RDC, the drawer feature that they have that lists all the servers you access is quite useful over the use of .RDP files, which litter my desktop. Any chance that might make it into the final release?

so buggy!

half way through my sessions it just decides that double clicking on files = show file properties and if i type everything comes out with åççénts on! impossible to use! i want beta 2 back!

Can't logn anymore...

Using Beta 2 i was able to connect to my Vista Ultimate machine. Under Beta 3 this dosn't work anymore - i'Ve seen the same msg from another german user - so it might be a problem with the german version?

Keyboard Problems

I too have keyboard problems, e.g. with using Alt+Tab, Alt+Enter (file properties in Explorer) with my Windows XP machine using German language settings on both my Mac and Windows XP.

Furthermore, Command+F1 (Windows key) does not work either, and keyboard input seems to be lost after pressing Alt... seems pretty much messed up.

problem

hello i was wondering why i always get an error saying i that i cannot log on because of an account restriction. Both computers are on and administrative account, and i even tried this at my friends house on two windows computers and it said the same thing. Just wondering hope you can help

Keyboard issue + still timeouts

Hi there,
thanks for the update. Unfortunately, since the update I can't use Shift-Key+Arrow keys to select text in applications on the remote station (e.g. in Outlook mails). And I'm still having the regular issue that the remote desktop freezes for a few seconds and then works again

. Still using Vista Professional for the target system, and still no freeze issues with XP or W2K3 systems.

Unusable...

Something goes completely wrong in B3. In a matter of seconds the client-OS gets completely messed up information about the status of Ctrl, Alt and Shift-Keys, so that I'm in fact unable to do any productive work on remote systems.

I think I'll go back to Beta 2 with the timecheck cracked away... If only I had the Beta 2 Installer somewhere...

Move files between OS

David, thanks for keeping the betas rolling! However, I have one small request: proper keyboard / keycode support. I use the Dvorak layout and remote servers (that use QWERTY by default) still default to QWERTY. If you could fix the key sending code, I'll send you guys plenty of beer to keep you occupied.

Windows Remote Assistance

Hi,

I was wondering whether you plan to support Remote Assistance? I'm a Mac user myself but my family use cheap Windows laptops* and it's really annoying to have to do free tech support "blind" over the phone.

As I understand it, Remote Assistance is built on Remote Desktop anyway.

1000 times better - but still not quite 100%!

Hi there, I've been having keyboard issues with connections to a W2k3 server using B3

Shift-down arrow, Shift-pageup & Shift-pagedown all work like delete

can't get a # character (I'm using a UK keyboard, which is normally Alt-3)

other than that, scrolling through pages is finally super-fast.

keyboard layout wrong?

With B3 I get a * instead of a ( in windows, pressing the ? key produces nothing on th win side. I have a dutch qwerty keyboard.

Much Improved!!!

Thanks for the beta 3 update! Not only is the expiration notice gone, but so are the little black regions that used to develop when running 2 RDC sessions at once. Although not a huge deal, I used to have to restart my sessions at least 3 times per day to keep the black regions at bay.

RDC is very important to the way I work - thanks for making it better.

Looking forward to the final release (and yeah..being able to double-click an RDC file to open that session is worth waiting for).

Why???

I was wondering why we still cannot use an interface as simple as "Vinagre" wich is a copy of "Microsoft Remote Desktop" from W2003 AdminPack.

I need to administrate more than 8 servers and when I'm using my Mac it becames a nightmare.

If you wanna connect just sometimes to one or two computers it is ok, but when you need an extra "power" it becames un-usable. Also, by default it is always asking stupid questions, wich makes you to waste your time donig click here and there and... I mean, If I wanna change somethin, I will do, in my preferences screen, but please, stop bugging me when I am working.

Are you gonna develop left column, tabs, etc. to administrate some servers at the same time?

Missing resolutions?

Hello, any chance you could you bring back 1152x870 screen resolution? Or at least make it available with a hidden menu option. 1024x768 is too small, and 1280x1024 is too large.

Black screen of death

Sorry, team, but I've just installed Beta3, and I no longer have RDC functionality. The app tells me I don't have Vista, then starts to log on, passes the login screen, turns the RDC window black, and stalls with a spinning beach ball. Sometimes splat-q quits, sometimes force quit is needed.

The target machine also seems to get a bit scrambled - the desktop background vanishes in favour of default blue, but a restart restores that. Icons are rearranged to fit the RDC window, and a restart doesn't fix that.

If I can't find the beta2 installer I'll just have to walk down the hall, I guess.

Tower G5 with MacOSX 10.4.11, reaching for a Dell Inspiron 8600 with up-to-date WinXP Pro over a wireless LAN.

ALT Key on Mac Spanish Keyboard

I was very happy realizing that RDC 2.0 Beta 3 is including other languages set than English.

I am currently using my Spanish Keyboard and very satisfied until it gets the time of using any character under the "ALT" combination.

By pressing the Alt+Key I am able to get the required character, but from that point on is like the ALT key is being pressed forever and there is no way to deactivate it. So final result is that from that point on, you can only type the characters under the ALT+Key combination.

Any help would be more than appreciated.

timing issue probably fixed?

Follow up to my Apr 15 post in [26-30] about the timeout issue.
Apologies, either you've got the timeout prob fixed, or the setting "netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled" on my Vista machine did the trick - I haven't rebooted the Vista machine since that setting was made, so I'm unsure about it's real impact.
If this setting works w/o rebooting, than the "timeouts" I've still experienced were linked to the missing ability of Shift+Arrowkey selection of text in the apps. Before I've discovered that the selection just doesn't work, every time when the selection didn't work I took a break, thinking of "ah, it's timing out". And after that I went back to mouse use

Wrong keyboad layout

With the beta 3 my keyboard layout is wrong. I use a MacBook US International keybboard, but my language is Dutch. Seems like it selects the dutch layout because I'm using this language.

Is there a work around?

Multi-connection

As a sys/netadmin, I often have to connect to many systems at once. This does not seem possible as only one instance of RDC can be running at once in OS X unlike the Windows version. Support for multiple simultaneous connections would be greatly appreciated.

timing issue struggler again

Hi there,
me again, I can approve, that the timing/delay issue (OSX10.5x/Vista) isn't gone if you just enter "netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled" in your Vista console, without rebooting the remote (Vista) system. My next report will come when I've found the time to reboot the remote sys

Wrong keyboard layout

The same here. RDC is using the wrong keyboard layout because my region settings are set to Dutch. Can you please fix this before the final release. It is very annoying.

Multi-Connection Needed!

I agree with Aron.

Anyone doing real system administration tasks will need more than 1 simultaneous connection. Even on a small load balancer application you're going to have 3 to 5 servers at a minimum.

More stable....but here's stuff that doesn't seem to work?

- "Quit" doesn't seem to work about 30-40% of the time. "Force Quit" never appears in the right-click, so then I have to go into system monitor to do a force quit?

- This doesn't play nice with OS X spaces. I can be in another "Space", and if I click on the RDC logo in the menu-bar, it doesn't bounce me to the space where the RDC is running.

- When I try and bring up the "spaces" chooser (f8) to pick which space to jump to, the RDC App doesn't even show up.

- Can't have multiple RDC Instances up at once?
- Can't jump to a different RDC instance without first quitting the current RDC instance?

Definitely seems more stable guys, but the weirdness with not always quitting and the non-spaces support is a bummer! But keep up the efforts!

Microsoft has the worst support EVER!

Apple charges you NOTHING, ZIP, NADA for support. Why does Bill Gates, a man with more money than GOD, charge people who purchase his $300 program, $50 too ask a simple question to a tech support via email. A question so simple that it should take 5 seconds to answer. For Instance, Where did the "Data Analysis" go in 2008. Its a basic tool found in 2004 why is it so hard to find. Microsoft needs to stop trying to make things look so pretty and start making them more practical. Microsoft also needs to stop ripping people off with tech support. I bought the program, I should be getting free 24 hour support with the purchase. How can companies that don't even fit in Mr. Gates left wing of his mansion be able to offer 24 free support, but he can't?

Time Zones

The only problem I've had with RDC for the Mac is that it doesn't respect the time zone on the server I am connecting to.

This is a big problem for me.

I can't use Shift-Tab to tab backwards at login, and sometimes the shift key doesn't work to capitalise the first letter

RDC Beta 3 help needed please

I use RDC all the time on my Win xp based pc's. However I am new to Mac, I have downloaded Beta# RDC but how do I configure it to my network? It just wont connect.

Keybord issues

I never managed to get the open curly ({) or open square ([) characters. Is it because I have two keyboards layouts?.

Anyway, this make this version unusable. I have to use the previous beta

AVID MEDIA COMPOSER doesnt work when Remote desktop is running

AVID just stops to see usb dongle on server side.

Nice try.. now go away and think about what you did!

My first reaction was YAY! then reality bit home.

ALT key 'sticking' - I use Spaces on Leopard and use ALT-<arrow> to move between them. I run my RDC session full screen in one of my Spaces but when I get there.. oh dear. No typing possible as ALT seems to be 'stuck'
SHIFT issues - Using SHIFT-<arrow> to highlight anything results in deletion.. in Outlook this can even be permanent deletion.

So really.. what DID you do? All we actually wanted before the full release was a non-crippled beta. You could have saved the cool new features for a 'bells and whistles' final release, I wouldn't have minded.. really! So please, gather in a room, take a long hard look at each other and make a decision to FIX THIS!

Can Not Login With Cached Domain Account

Alright so I have already posted this feedback and it seems as though since MS was unable to replicate the problem (which I can each and every time) they closed the ticket as resolved. Hence why I'm posting here.

Using RDC I am unable to login to my work laptop using cached domain credentials at the login screen. I can use RDC to login with a local account and I can use RDC to login once I log in from the laptop. However, it would be nice to not have to do this.

Anyone else have this problem?

No workee with paranoid Term Servers

I've got one term server at my company that's using a license for additional cals, all the rest use the builtin 2 that you get with Server 2003.

None of the Windows users could use the system until they installed Remote Desktop 6.

I can't use it at all, with Beta 2 or Beta 3.

I get the confirmation of "Remote Desktop Connection cannot verify the identity of the computer that you want to connect to", I tell it to connect anyway, then I get the same error again with "Try reconnecting to the Windows-based computer, or contact our [sic] administrator".

More Vista paranoia creeping its way into things?

How do i right hand click when connected to my PC via My Mac

I am connected to my old desktop pc via my mac using the RDC, but i really need to know how i right click on files ... as my Mac mouse only as the 1 button??? help me lol

Spaces support?

Is anyone able to assign a full screen RDC session to another space? I was able to do it quite happily with B2, but can no longer do this, which is a shame because I'm so used to having my remote desktop on s2

How Do I Copy Files Between My Mac And Remote PC?

I can connect and control the remote pc with my mac but I cannot transfer files by copying and pasting as I can with Windows Remote Desktop.

There must be some different way to do this with the Mac.

Anybody know it?

RDC is not really that useful unless support for TS Gateway is added. We really need this for our Mac Users.

Remote Desktop Beta Broken

I can no longer log into a the windows machine for some reason.
this was working fine only yesterday, has a recent mac update caused this problem??

The logs in console say:

Keyboard does not function properly

I just upgraded from beta 2 to beta 3. But now the keys on my keyboard of my macbook (with Dutch version of OSX) no longer give the right symbols.

I think this has to do with the language settings in beta 3, but how can I change RDC to use my keyboard as an English (standard) keyboard?

Memory Leak

I dont know if you people at MS read this at all but for all its worth I would like to report an issue. This version of RMD has really bad memory leak. It also freezes a lot of the time when I try to quit the application. Upon freezing it uses all my RAM.

Printing??

I am local support at my company, So far it has been great for the remote users who are mac owners in my comapany, the only thing is, we wish we could print to the local location, there is a software for windows called "screw drivers" by tricerat.com that we have been using for our windows user's which works great but that is the piece that is missing from the mac side.

Kudos for the hard work so far!
