I also wanted to give you a glimpse of the next version of Office for Mac. As with SP1, we are taking your feedback and using it to help us make Office for Mac better. Congrats on making the decision to bring VBA back. I'm afraid though, that it may be too late by the time Office ships. Customers will either use VMWare/Parallels and a copy of Office for Windows, or they may move on to iWork or other competitors.

I would love to see a real answer from the horses mouth on why Microsoft will not port Access to the Mac. FileMaker is far behind the times when it comes to visual aspects of a program ( except Bento which is good for beginners). Access is also a much better front end to SQL products.

I would like to be able to buy/use a simpler version of this suite; at least simpler versions of Word and Entourage. I use Entourage for email only and don't want or need the many other features and size. I don't publish anything and so would also be happier with a simpler version of Word that ends with footnotes/headers/outline numbering of paras and the ToC builder. The rest I will never use.

Thanks for SP1, and the announcement that VBA is returning. Three questions:
When you say the 'next version', can you clarify if you mean Office 2008 SP2, or Office 2010? Understanding the timeframe involved (even if approximate) is vital to corporate IS planning.
Can you clarify the roadmap for improving Entourage and bringing its functionality closer to that of Outlook?
Are you working on improving Office 2008's performance on PowerPC architecture? It is noticeably slower than Office 2004, and this negates the benefits of some excellent new features.

Startup times?
What are people seeing for initial startup times on the new SP1 versions? I was hopeful SP1 would reduce this startup time, but it actually seems to have increased it by 10-20% for me.
It can now me take over 12-15 seconds for Word to load on a MacBook Pro with 3GB of RAM.
I can open a Word doc in 2-3 seconds through Parallels, which seems sad on a number of levels. Am I alone in this? Is this a priority for SP2?

VBA: The real thing, please
Thanks for the update. If you're really planning to bring VBA back to Office for Mac, then deliver stuff that really works -- and not something outdated and incompatible (like you did in the past). As little limitations as possible, please (I know that OS X has no Registry, e.g.)...
Otherwise it's getting more and more evident that you have sacrificed (or had to sacrifice) so many things in Office 2008 that the only thing that might be worth the upgrade is the fact that it's Intel native. What a swizz.

What planet are you guys on?
First you remove VBA support, so the software assurance my client‘s buy was a waste of time (they now have a copy of Office 2008 that does support all their VBA code. I have a DVD on a shelf gathering dust).
So now we are halfway though converting to iCal, Address Book, Apple Mail and staying with Word 2004 (but checking out Open Office).
And now you try and dangle the carrot in front of me again. “Spend $XX,000 now for a new software assurance agreement now and in two to three years you’ll get VBA back.”
With no assurance they they wont change their minds again.

SP1 appears to kill Print Selection in Word
When I try to print a selection, Word grabs about 100% of the CPU and locks up. I have to kill Word to get out. I can reproduce this consistently.

Some users who have installed Office 2008 for Mac Service Pack 1 are reporting an issue that occurs after installation. The issue causes the Office Setup Assistant to open when they try to open an Office application. This situation occurs when the Office Setup Assistant detects that an invalid Product Key, such as a key received for the Beta version of Office 2008, was used to install Office 2008.
To resolve this issue, please move the following files to the Trash:
After you complete these steps, open any Office application, and then use the product key that is included with your original installation disk to complete the installation. The product key is located on the back of the Office 2008 for Mac DVD sleeve or on the back of the Install Guide.
I just updated my Office 2008 to SP1.. I have yet to see any improvement in my office apps since launching Word 2008 for example, still takes a quite long time...
The following error messages are also still appearing in Console (happens for PowerPoint, Word, and probably Excel).. This error message goes on and on as long as the program is running, flooding the whole Console record..

SP1 and Apple Remote Desktop?
Hey Guys,
Any known issues with pushing SP1 out to clients using ARD? I've tried on several systems, and ARD 3 returns a success, but the user's Office applications aren't touched... The only way it seems to run is if the update metapackage is run on the client. I may be missing something, but I've tried just about everything I can think of.
We have a MVLS agreement in place, and in this lone office I have about 50 users, though globally, the number is in the several hundreds. I can't imagine having to touch every system.
Any help you can offer would be truly appreciated.

Speed?
I have a MBP (Leopard) with 2Gb of ram and its takes close to a minute to open an Office 08 app. Lets hope the SP speeds things up. Please!

Issues after Upgrade - Office Setup Assistant
Everytime I open up an office program it quits and opens up the Office Setup Assistant. After the setup assistant runs, nothing happens.
I can't access Office, Excel or anything...
Others have reported this same issue.

SP1 deployment via ARD
I just tried deploying SP1 to a test computer running 10.4.11 and the previous patched version of Office 2008, and the update failed. Rather, the update declared it was successful, but the application versions were not changed.
I also tried deploying SP1 via ARD to a test 10.4.11 computer running the original unpached 12.0.0 version of Office 2008. Again, the package installer within ARD said it was successfully installed, but the application versions are still 12.0.0.

SP1 and Entourage 2008, Problems I never had before. Now I have one.
Updated with SP1 which was installed successfully according to the install program. As soon as I opened Entourage I had to allow (always) Entourage access to keychain password for the incoming accounts. Despite allowing for this "Always" the next time either the program or I attempted a send/receive to download emails, I was prompted to perform the same operations. No matter how many times I click on "Always Allow" Entourage prompts me. This was never a problem prior to the installation and frankly, I have little tolerance for this kind of result after installing SP1.

My Day is ruined
I was really hoping for a few things in the update and not one of them has appeared:
- Option to make My Day less "widget" like and more readable. I find the current implementation to be ugly and very difficult to use because the shading, color and text drop shadows are very poorly done. I so admired the design of the notifications in 2004 and would like to see both the notification and My Day applets of 2008 become for like that, or at least an option to do that.
- window positions for new mail and contact edit windows are still not remembered
- I want to hide the Gallery bar in Word and Excel. what a waste of precious space for a feature I'll rarely use. Why force this on me? Just give me the OPTION!!!
- Would like to resize the project gallery window.
Those were the easy ones:
- categories by type in Entourage. Separate category groups for addresses, tasks, events and notes
- a note preview pane
- while we're at it, I would like to see a simple and elegant way to add all these types of data to Entourage using a dock click or keyboard command from any application. Sorry, but My Day is ugly and limited and it's more a marketing tool than a productivity too.

SP1 installer does not appear to do anything
I have run the installer on many computers and about 90% of them still report version 12.0.1. The installer runs in about 5 seconds on the machines that it does not update.
I also have tried running the installer from the command line using the installer utility and the verbose flag. The results have only one error: ps: option requres an argument --p and gives usage instructions on how to use ps.
Users on the macenterprise list have reported the same problem.

Still sooo much to fix
I am very disappointed that the bugs with spaces and expose still have not been fixed. It really makes using MS Office very annoying!!!
The other bug that I would like to see fixed it that the quicklook plugins need work. Many of my Word and Powerpoint documents don't show up properly in quicklook.

Small new issues rearing their ugly heads.
I really never had a problem with Office 2008 - personally thought it was a step above 2004 (sure I had a few font issues but I worked through that). I do wish the Ribbon was worked into Office 2008, having used both 2008 and 2007 of Office, I find myself wishing for the surprising ease of use of the Ribbon...
Now that said, I have to admit I'm shocked by a rather odd bug that seemed to have reared its head in this service pack - that of opening documents by double clicking on them in Finder. Word documents, instead of opening the original document open a blank document. Now if you have Word open the documents load fine, but if Word is not open you get the blank document.
Very odd behavior indeed.

OK, having VBA back (hopefully a WORKING verison, close to the Windows one, is cool, Well Done, But when? Will that be SP2 or the next office version which is scheduled when 2010? 2012?

But honestly, The main reason people are using MS Office 2008 for mac is:
- Need to talk to Exchange Server
- working in a "MS dominant" environment for compatibility.
The first issue is the one I use it for but Entourage doesn't support the basics like HTML Emails, HTML Footer (I always need to start Fusuion, change my email footer and make a snapshot and include this as a picture in Entourage ????). It doesn't sync notes, etc. etc.
And the compatibility issue ..... hmmm, honestly, it's not more compatible to the Windows Version than OpenOffice or Neo or iWork.
So I really ask myself: which way are you going, what is your intention? letting customers buy the most expensive Office Suite available for mac, frusttrate them and collect license fee again for Windows and Office for Windows? Nice Business Model, but it'll not work .. Openoffice is close, including VBA (basic of course, but Office 2004 wasn't more), it's free ..... and maybe sooner or later someone will come with a Outlook equivalent with full MAPI Support?

It makes a BIG difference for meetings. If necessary consult with your Windows counterparts they managed to get it right on the money *BEFORE* you even released Office 2008.
Quite shameful really when put like that isn't it?
Please, please, pretty please update the timezones in a quick patch.

Nice job! Keep it up.
In just a few hours use of the new Word I perceive a much more stable program. In the last few days I've been working with clients' documents chock full of mark-ups and old Word crashed repeatedly under the load. Today all is well.
Now, please make Office function with Spaces and Expose and you will have done great things.

I went all Mac with vmware (winXP) a few months ago, I stopped using office 2008 last month due to bugs and annoying things like customizing the toolbar was Windows like and too confusing.
I switched to the iApps until SP1 but like them too much to go back. Office 2007 on vmware does the rest since I have to run Windows for my IT admin duties.

I was excited about the service pack, but my two biggest problems with Office 2008 appear unaffected. It still takes more than a half a minute to launch on my dual core 2.16 GHz MacBook with 2 GB of RAM--the same time as before. It also doesn't work properly with Leopard's Expose feature
Please, Microsoft, work on these issues. It should not take more than twice as long to open Word 2008 as to open Word 2004 on an intel mac running Rosetta.

Excel feature
While I would have installed it anyway so I can access my old Outlook pst files I was forced to invest in VMWare (which is great btw) for 1 stupid excel 2007 feature "Remove Duplicates". Any chance of making the Excel 2008 capable of this silly but unbelievably helpful feature because using Advanced Filtering is at best annoying and all too often you lose data.
Back to MAC after 15yrs of living on the dark side...

I need Visual Basic support for work related documents - will be glad when the next version comes out and hopefully supports some work related docs.
Also - although my Mac brethren may kill me... how about an Access port? Would gladly give up Entourage - sorry, still the worst application of the bunch - slow, clunky, odd interface, and Db craps out too easily. Access would rule!

Still a major Excel bug
I hoped this SP would fix a previous bug but it hasn't. It involves copying date data from one spreadsheet to another. Here's when it happens:
If a date is used in a spreadsheet with multiple worksheets and it is entered in the form, 3/8/2008, the date is not copied properly into another spreadsheet.
It DOES NOT HAPPEN when the initial spreadsheet only has one worksheet or when the date is entered in the form, =date(2008,3,3).
Has anyone else observed this???

SP2 Suggestions
Spaces Compatibility: MS Office apps lose focus when switching between or among Spaces, even when selecting Dock Application icon to return to Space containing the MS Office app. I have not experienced this problem w/ other apps, so I assume this is primarily a MS Office issue. Requires multiple clicks on desktop or some other app and then the MS Office app to regain focus after switching Spaces.
Metafile Support: Add Enhanced Metafile to Paste Special options for better compatibility w/ Windows MS Office apps. PDF is current closest match, and it isn't fully compatible. PCT compatibility is better than PDF, but EMF would/should be identical. PCT is no longer a built-in option and requires additional steps to accomplish. Being able to read/render EMF/WMF but not be able to insert/write one of the two standard Windows metafile options is ridiculous.
Worksheet Tabs: Allow Colored/Shaded worksheet tabs in MS Excel.
No Ribbon UI...ever. Elements Gallery is tolerable as is, but should have an option to hide altogether.
Native ODF support...read/write.
Visio Stencils for OmniGraffle...if Visio won't be ported to Mac, you could probably sell a Visio Stencil pack for OmniGraffle. This would enhance compatibility between platforms.
And just a question and comment on the VBA functionality fiasco...if Office 2008 is really selling so well w/o it, will anyone notice it is available again in 2012? Will AppleScript support be crippled by enabling VBA again? I don't get it...why bother? Next you'll be announcing IE8 will be made available for Mac again too...that ship has sailed boys and girls. People move on and find out they don't really need those things they just lost through no fault of their own.

Waiting until next version then
It's not clear what "next version" means. If it means 12.2.0, then I'll probably buy 2008. If it means 2012, then I'll wait until then. 2008 loses me the ability to use Endnote (who will want to charge me another $100 for a new version later this year), is, by all accounts, slower than 2004 (even on an Intel machine, where 2004 is running under Rosetta - how can this be?!), is buggy, and still has no motion path support in Powerpoint. When office has motion path support, is fast, and is not buggy, as well as having VBA support, then I'll consider an upgrade. Until then, 2004 works just fine.

Entourage address book still not responding correctly after SP1
Cannot edit or delete 585 existing contacts from Office 2004, also cannot edit or delete freshly imported, dragged and dropped, contacts from Mac Address book. What is going on? I'm forced to force close program in order to exit after attempting to modify existing or newly added contacts. Entourage program states I must use the move to command but it is not highlighted for use. Help?

No Fixes Noticeable
So what exactly did you fix? My documents still download as ".doc.dot" ".ppt.pot" etc. I see the issue is resolved for some in the comments. I simply cannot for the life of me grasp what is so great about the glitchy Office '08. The load times are horrendous. Equations from my professors never come in right in PowerPoint. Exposé never works right with Word. The title of the document does not appear when the mouse is over that window, and the window doesn't receive any sort of highlighting when the mouse is dragged over it. I thought '08 was going to be amazing. I find myself wanting to go back to '04, or even, buying VMWare Fusion and running Office '07, which runs MUCH nicer than '08.

Loading Time - Word & Excel (Office for MAC 2008, v12.1.0
Love Office 2008 - like the features and upgrades from 2004, etc. (I'm not a VBA user). However (knew this was coming) Word and Excel can still take MINUTES to completely load and become functional. It is frustrating to have to wait so long. Once they're fully loaded, they're working as expected and offering a nice complement of new features that make working better. Any suggestions for improving the startup time on these two would be most helpful. From my point of view, they still need work to catch them up to Entourage 2008, which loads in SECONDS on my MacBook Pro (2.33 GHz, 2GB Memory).

Can not open some Word/Excel files by double-clicking
Simply put...
I have a series of documents (going back 10 years) that I must have received as e-mail attachments. Anything *I* created since that time works fine.
These documents will not open when double-clicked. The *program* will launch, but the document will not open. (It opens via File--> Open, though.)
This is new behavior with 12.1 There were no problems with these documents under 12.0.1
I'm not alone in this one -- MacFixit users report this as well and there are reports on the mac.office.word newsgroup about it, too.
How do we fix it? Rebuilding the launchservices database has no effect, nor does toggling a "change all" in Get Info.

PowerPoint 2008 has a problem with 3rd party fonts. Our corporate font is a standard ITC postscript face. PowerPoint can see the font name but when applied to text, the text becomes some kind of generic sans face. In the meantime I've downgraded back to 2004.
Does this SP fix the problems with 3rd Party fonts in ppt?

Good update
OK - few glitches with files not opening that I had saved right before the update. And I wish you would fix the problems with Expose --- I have never seen any Mac software that managed to break Expose, I have no idea how you did that.
But on my Powerbook G4 1.67 running Tiger, this is now performing at the level that Word 2004 was, or better - it seems noticeably faster and more responsive. so thanks.

Of course VBA support is a major issue right now (not in future), so that waiting for the next version seems a bit too late! Automated workflow in office occurs through VBA on Mac AND PC.
Maybe you could give you a hitch and try do add it in the current version.
Isn't it possible to run VBA in Rosetta mode?
PS lots of lab machinery uses VBA to import the results directly into Excel for ex. thus your choice to take away VBA in this version is hard to understand.

VBA support is essential to me - particularly in Excel. Because of the lack of the support I can't move to Office 2008 as key spreadsheets simply will not run. Using Applescript is not a viable option.

Is there anything new on compatibility with EndNote?
Just deinstalled Office 2008 for Mac because Word would not work with EndNote. Any patches planned? We will not be able to use 2008 as long as there are compatibility issues with EndNote.

Modify date in powerpoint
SP1 doesn't fix the obvious bug that re-dates a PPT file every time it is opened. Thus, the PPT files can't be stored in chronological order based on real modifications.

I use office live and sharepoint. I love the way that office 2007 work together, but I would love it even better if entourage could do it as well.
Which leads to the next question - why will hotmail work with entourage but office live email doesn't?

VBA to return
I was going to spend my free time this summer learning Filemaker, which has a similar programming style to VBA.
If you do come out with a version of Office with VBA then I will likely but at least one multiuser package. I have held up on buying not only Office 2008, but Intel Macs as well. I have 3 Intel Macs for billing and scheduling and 7 G4/G5 Macs at my office for all the rest due to the need for VBA. I have 20 to 30 forms and 200 to 300 macros for data input and manipulation in Word. Most of them written for Office 2001 with some applescript patches.
I want it to run, properly if possible. I would be willing to be a beta site to test all of my macros - some of which also interface with applescript for file manipulation and moving, as well as almost any type of replace and search, paragraph, document and table formating. A stated above, I have forms for data input that are very complex and have had trouble with crashes under Rosetta as well as the occasional unimplemented object, property, or function.
When it does come out, I would expect some bugs, I would be much happier with a list of known bugs that I can work around then finding it out on my own.
By the way, as Office has been updated about every 3 years, will we be waiting until 2011 fr this to be available.

Can't Open Excel Files after Service Pack 1 Update
After downloading the Service Pack 1 Update yesterday, I found I could not open a significant portion of my Excel Files, either by double-clicking or through the Excel File menu. I reinstalled my original version of MS Office 2008 for Mac, but then, of course, I couldn't open Entourage. I’m kinda between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Obviously, there is a problem with Service Pack 1. I hope they find a fix or a workaround in a hurry...

I want more consistency between Mac and Windows flavors
I'd like to see a bit more consistency between the two platforms. I have to work on both at work and don't like having to learn two versions of the same software. I should be able to switch between the two and pick up right where I left off on the other OS. Some differences due to OS capability and look & feel considerations are one thing. But creating completely different applications (both look & functionality) doesn't make sense to me.
My biggest complaint is Entourage. 2008 was a big step up, but there are still so many ways that Outlook kicks its tail. I want real connectivity with my company's Exchange server. Not Outlook Web Access painted another color... which is pretty much what Entourage is now.

While I like the new version of Office for MAC, I'd prefer if the look, feel, and functionality were identical to that of the PC version. I switch back and forth alot due to work and the differences are frustrating.

Leopard Spaces
Word in Leopard's new Spaces feature is diabolical. I know others are having this problem too because I saw a reference to it in a MacWorld review of Office, but I can't seem to find any reference to it here. Is there a fix proposed? As it stands I've had to disable Spaces (Word is my main program) and I'm just starting to realise how useful Spaces can be.

SP 1 Update

Problem After Installing SP1
Never had this problem before I installed SP1. Whenever I launch Entourage 2008 I get the following message:
Unable to establish a secure connection to mydomain.com because the correct root certificate is not installed. If you continue, the information you view and send will be encrypted, but it will not he secure."
What's up, how do I fix it?

Issues with opening documents
Ever since installing service pack one double clicking on a Word document won't open it I have to manually open it in word after it loads up.
I'm on a Macbook Pro running leopard anyone else having this issue??
When I open an Excel document I see no icons for the toolbar. If I go in to View>Toolbars>Standard and uncheck standard, and then repeat the process and check standard the icons appear. Any idea how to correct this problem of the icons not being visible until I cycle through unchecking and rechecking the standard toolbar setting?

The tease about bring back VBA in the "next version" of Office has been heard; but, you were non-descript. What does the "next version" mean? Care to respond to your own blog and it's generated multiple inquires to the same question?
That means we'll be seeing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files in those formats.
When will the Mac version follow suit? This seems to be quite important now especially if we'll be getting files from Windows users with those extensions.

Could you please allow a copy/paste option for events place in the entourage calender (as it is in Outlook). Sometimes I need to duplicate an event , but I don't want to have it be a 'recurring' event.

Word 2008 spell check doesnt work
No matter what I do or what I type, there are no red wavy error lines any more. Am I doing anything wrong? The proper tick-boxes have been selected.
Why is that happening? Is this a known issue or just me?

I see that problems with Spaces and Office 2008 have been discussed in other forums at the beginning of the year.
It looks like neither Office 12.1.0 or OS X 10.5.3 upgrades offer a fix.
Testing:
1. open a Word doc.
2. open a second Word doc then drag to another space.
3. the first doc follows it to the other space
4. try the hotkey and drag either doc back to the original space
5. the other doc follows
Open or create another Word doc and the same behavior continues. Sometimes they all jump back to space number one by themselves. This doesn't happen with Word 2004 docs, which can happily occupy different spaces. Excel and Powerpoint 2008 files can also occupy different spaces.
So you can't work on different Word 2008 docs in different spaces at all, which can impede a busy editor or researcher's workflow significantly.
I assume this is a known issue, is a fix expected?

As a result, I'll sit on my money and wait to see what that really means (i.e., 3+ years from Office 2008 for the Mac, or a true update in Office 2008--earlier and to the delight and surprise of Mac OS X users of Office, or something else).

2. Animation timeline in Power Point
3. Table and HTML support in Entourage (while sending)

It has been reported that the next SP of Office 2007 will include ODF support.
Will this feature be included in an upcoming SP of Office 2008 within the same general time frame as the Office '07 SP?

Text wrap in Powerpoint
Hi,
I downloaded and installed SP1 on my MacBook.
In files created with older versions of Powerpoint, I have an annoying bug: in many cells with wrapped text, there is an indentation after the first row like this:
First row
second row
third row
etc.
Not in all cells (apparently this happens at random), but this is really terrible for the layout of the presentation.
If you try to justify the wrapped text, things get even more chaotic (more spaces added on the left).
Of course, it is not possible to erase these "phantom spaces".
I have read about others with the same problem in the forum and elsewhere. Help!

Who sent email?
My wife is complaining that when she received email Entourage shows my name before her email address. I presume this is because it takes the name of the master account and then gives the subsidiary email address. But this approach makes it annoying for people who use subsets of a email account. Why should my wife and children be identified as ME when getting emails?

Live WIndow Resizing, good in theory.
Live window resizing is good, when it runs as smoothly as a finder window.
Word 2008 on my dual 2.0Ghz 4gb RAM PowerMac resizes with a huge lag.
I would like an option to return to the good old fashioned silhouette resize like in Excel, or a much smoother live window resizing experience

Word is Soooo Slow
I am experiencing slow saves, slow typing, slow document switching. Much slower than 2004. I should probably go back to 2004 but I do like the new interface.
I read that Spaces was a problem but performance seems the same if it is off or on.
I hope you will bring Macros back very soon. This is critical for me because I need to duplicate actions on multiple docs.
I guess I should go back to 2004 for now!

VBA or nothing
We are still using Office 2001 for Mac because there was no significant reason to upgrade to Office 2004.
In particular, there was no major improvement in the tons of bugs that we patiently worked around when using VBA with Office 2001.
More than 90% of our Office documents are automatically generated by VBA macros which total thousands of lines.
Throwing away this work and restart developping from scratch is not an option.
As a result:
- If VBA returns and is correctly supported, in this case we may consider an upgrade.
- Otherwise, we shall proceed with Office 2001 but this software will be removed from our computers if it stops running with a next release of MacOS.

When you say the 'next version', can you clarify if you mean Office 2008 SP2, or Office 2010? Understanding the timeframe involved (even if approximate) is vital to corporate IS planning.
Can you clarify the roadmap for improving Entourage and bringing its functionality closer to that of Outlook?
Are you working on improving Office 2008's performance on PowerPC architecture? It is noticeably slower than Office 2004, and this negates the benefits of some excellent new features.

Startup times?
It can now me take over 12-15 seconds for Word to load on a MacBook Pro with 3GB of RAM.
I can open a Word doc in 2-3 seconds through Parallels, which seems sad on a number of levels. Am I alone in this? Is this a priority for SP2?

First you remove VBA support, so the software assurance my client‘s buy was a waste of time (they now have a copy of Office 2008 that does support all their VBA code. I have a DVD on a shelf gathering dust).
So now we are halfway though converting to iCal, Address Book, Apple Mail and staying with Word 2004 (but checking out Open Office).
And now you try and dangle the carrot in front of me again. “Spend $XX,000 now for a new software assurance agreement now and in two to three years you’ll get VBA back.”
With no assurance they they wont change their minds again.

Workaround for SP1 install issue
Some users who have installed Office 2008 for Mac Service Pack 1 are reporting an issue that occurs after installation. The issue causes the Office Setup Assistant to open when they try to open an Office application. This situation occurs when the Office Setup Assistant detects that an invalid Product Key, such as a key received for the Beta version of Office 2008, was used to install Office 2008.
To resolve this issue, please move the following files to the Trash:
· /Users/username/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 settings.plist
· /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist
After you complete these steps, open any Office application, and then use the product key that is included with your original installation disk to complete the installation. The product key is located on the back of the Office 2008 for Mac DVD sleeve or on the back of the Install Guide.

SP1 and Apple Remote Desktop?
Any known issues with pushing SP1 out to clients using ARD? I've tried on several systems, and ARD 3 returns a success, but the user's Office applications aren't touched... The only way it seems to run is if the update metapackage is run on the client. I may be missing something, but I've tried just about everything I can think of.
We have a MVLS agreement in place, and in this lone office I have about 50 users, though globally, the number is in the several hundreds. I can't imagine having to touch every system.
Any help you can offer would be truly appreciated.

SP1 deployment via ARD
I also tried deploying SP1 via ARD to a test 10.4.11 computer running the original unpached 12.0.0 version of Office 2008. Again, the package installer within ARD said it was successfully installed, but the application versions are still 12.0.0.

My Day is ruined
- Option to make My Day less "widget" like and more readable. I find the current implementation to be ugly and very difficult to use because the shading, color and text drop shadows are very poorly done. I so admired the design of the notifications in 2004 and would like to see both the notification and My Day applets of 2008 become for like that, or at least an option to do that.
- window positions for new mail and contact edit windows are still not remembered
- I want to hide the Gallery bar in Word and Excel. what a waste of precious space for a feature I'll rarely use. Why force this on me? Just give me the OPTION!!!
- Would like to resize the project gallery window.
Those were the easy ones:
- categories by type in Entourage. Separate category groups for addresses, tasks, events and notes
- a note preview pane
- while we're at it, I would like to see a simple and elegant way to add all these types of data to Entourage using a dock click or keyboard command from any application. Sorry, but My Day is ugly and limited and it's more a marketing tool than a productivity too.

SP1 installer does not appear to do anything
I also have tried running the installer from the command line using the installer utility and the verbose flag. The results have only one error: ps: option requres an argument --p and gives usage instructions on how to use ps.
Users on the macenterprise list have reported the same problem.

Small new issues rearing their ugly heads.
Now that said, I have to admit I'm shocked by a rather odd bug that seemed to have reared its head in this service pack - that of opening documents by double clicking on them in Finder. Word documents, instead of opening the original document open a blank document. Now if you have Word open the documents load fine, but if Word is not open you get the blank document.
Very odd behavior indeed.

But honestly, The main reason people are using MS Office 2008 for mac is:
- Need to talk to Exchange Server
- working in a "MS dominant" environment for compatibility.
The first issue is the one I use it for but Entourage doesn't support the basics like HTML Emails, HTML Footer (I always need to start Fusuion, change my email footer and make a snapshot and include this as a picture in Entourage ????). It doesn't sync notes, etc. etc.
And the compatibility issue ..... hmmm, honestly, it's not more compatible to the Windows Version than OpenOffice or Neo or iWork.
So I really ask myself: which way are you going, what is your intention? letting customers buy the most expensive Office Suite available for mac, frusttrate them and collect license fee again for Windows and Office for Windows? Nice Business Model, but it'll not work .. Openoffice is close, including VBA (basic of course, but Office 2004 wasn't more), it's free ..... and maybe sooner or later someone will come with a Outlook equivalent with full MAPI Support?

It makes a BIG difference for meetings. If necessary consult with your Windows counterparts they managed to get it right on the money *BEFORE* you even released Office 2008.
Quite shameful really when put like that isn't it?
Please, please, pretty please update the timezones in a quick patch.

I switched to the iApps until SP1 but like them too much to go back. Office 2007 on vmware does the rest since I have to run Windows for my IT admin duties.

Also - although my Mac brethren may kill me... how about an Access port? Would gladly give up Entourage - sorry, still the worst application of the bunch - slow, clunky, odd interface, and Db craps out too easily. Access would rule!

Still a major Excel bug
If a date is used in a spreadsheet with multiple worksheets and it is entered in the form, 3/8/2008, the date is not copied properly into another spreadsheet.
It DOES NOT HAPPEN when the initial spreadsheet only has one worksheet or when the date is entered in the form, =date(2008,3,3).
Has anyone else observed this???

SP2 Suggestions
Metafile Support: Add Enhanced Metafile to Paste Special options for better compatibility w/ Windows MS Office apps. PDF is current closest match, and it isn't fully compatible. PCT compatibility is better than PDF, but EMF would/should be identical. PCT is no longer a built-in option and requires additional steps to accomplish. Being able to read/render EMF/WMF but not be able to insert/write one of the two standard Windows metafile options is ridiculous.
Worksheet Tabs: Allow Colored/Shaded worksheet tabs in MS Excel.
No Ribbon UI...ever. Elements Gallery is tolerable as is, but should have an option to hide altogether.
Native ODF support...read/write.
Visio Stencils for OmniGraffle...if Visio won't be ported to Mac, you could probably sell a Visio Stencil pack for OmniGraffle. This would enhance compatibility between platforms.
And just a question and comment on the VBA functionality fiasco...if Office 2008 is really selling so well w/o it, will anyone notice it is available again in 2012? Will AppleScript support be crippled by enabling VBA again? I don't get it...why bother? Next you'll be announcing IE8 will be made available for Mac again too...that ship has sailed boys and girls. People move on and find out they don't really need those things they just lost through no fault of their own.

Can not open some Word/Excel files by double-clicking
I have a series of documents (going back 10 years) that I must have received as e-mail attachments. Anything *I* created since that time works fine.
These documents will not open when double-clicked. The *program* will launch, but the document will not open. (It opens via File--> Open, though.)
This is new behavior with 12.1 There were no problems with these documents under 12.0.1
I'm not alone in this one -- MacFixit users report this as well and there are reports on the mac.office.word newsgroup about it, too.
How do we fix it? Rebuilding the launchservices database has no effect, nor does toggling a "change all" in Get Info.

But on my Powerbook G4 1.67 running Tiger, this is now performing at the level that Word 2004 was, or better - it seems noticeably faster and more responsive. so thanks.

Of course VBA support is a major issue right now (not in future), so that waiting for the next version seems a bit too late! Automated workflow in office occurs through VBA on Mac AND PC.
Maybe you could give you a hitch and try do add it in the current version.
Isn't it possible to run VBA in Rosetta mode?
PS lots of lab machinery uses VBA to import the results directly into Excel for ex. thus your choice to take away VBA in this version is hard to understand.

VBA to return
If you do come out with a version of Office with VBA then I will likely but at least one multiuser package. I have held up on buying not only Office 2008, but Intel Macs as well. I have 3 Intel Macs for billing and scheduling and 7 G4/G5 Macs at my office for all the rest due to the need for VBA. I have 20 to 30 forms and 200 to 300 macros for data input and manipulation in Word. Most of them written for Office 2001 with some applescript patches.
I want it to run, properly if possible. I would be willing to be a beta site to test all of my macros - some of which also interface with applescript for file manipulation and moving, as well as almost any type of replace and search, paragraph, document and table formating. A stated above, I have forms for data input that are very complex and have had trouble with crashes under Rosetta as well as the occasional unimplemented object, property, or function.
When it does come out, I would expect some bugs, I would be much happier with a list of known bugs that I can work around then finding it out on my own.
By the way, as Office has been updated about every 3 years, will we be waiting until 2011 fr this to be available.

I want more consistency between Mac and Windows flavors
My biggest complaint is Entourage. 2008 was a big step up, but there are still so many ways that Outlook kicks its tail. I want real connectivity with my company's Exchange server. Not Outlook Web Access painted another color... which is pretty much what Entourage is now.

That means we'll be seeing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files in those formats.
When will the Mac version follow suit? This seems to be quite important now especially if we'll be getting files from Windows users with those extensions.

It looks like neither Office 12.1.0 or OS X 10.5.3 upgrades offer a fix.
Testing:
1. open a Word doc.
2. open a second Word doc then drag to another space.
3. the first doc follows it to the other space
4. try the hotkey and drag either doc back to the original space
5. the other doc follows
Open or create another Word doc and the same behavior continues. Sometimes they all jump back to space number one by themselves. This doesn't happen with Word 2004 docs, which can happily occupy different spaces. Excel and Powerpoint 2008 files can also occupy different spaces.
So you can't work on different Word 2008 docs in different spaces at all, which can impede a busy editor or researcher's workflow significantly.
I assume this is a known issue, is a fix expected?

Request to bring in Missing Features
Hi.. There are many Missing Features (as compared to Office 2007 - consider adding them:
1. Pivot Chart in Excel
2. Animation timeline in Power Point
3. Table and HTML support in Entourage (while sending)
4. Conditional formatting compatibility in Excel (files with conditional formatting in Excel 2007 appear with #### ##)

Text wrap in Powerpoint
I downloaded and installed SP1 on my MacBook.
In files created with older versions of Powerpoint, I have an annoying bug: in many cells with wrapped text, there is an indentation after the first row like this:
First row
second row
third row
etc.
Not in all cells (apparently this happens at random), but this is really terrible for the layout of the presentation.
If you try to justify the wrapped text, things get even more chaotic (more spaces added on the left).
Of course, it is not possible to erase these "phantom spaces".
I have read about others with the same problem in the forum and elsewhere. Help!

Live WIndow Resizing, good in theory.
Word 2008 on my dual 2.0Ghz 4gb RAM PowerMac resizes with a huge lag.
I would like an option to return to the good old fashioned silhouette resize like in Excel, or a much smoother live window resizing experience

I read that Spaces was a problem but performance seems the same if it is off or on.
I hope you will bring Macros back very soon. This is critical for me because I need to duplicate actions on multiple docs.
I guess I should go back to 2004 for now!

VBA or nothing
In particular, there was no major improvement in the tons of bugs that we patiently worked around when using VBA with Office 2001.
More than 90% of our Office documents are automatically generated by VBA macros which total thousands of lines.
Throwing away this work and restart developping from scratch is not an option.
As a result:
- If VBA returns and is correctly supported, in this case we may consider an upgrade.
- Otherwise, we shall proceed with Office 2001 but this software will be removed from our computers if it stops running with a next release of MacOS.
