Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

Processor: Intel

in short I have been uploading a word file coping and pasting it into a new document or a document that I have already started but want to add to and it word pops up with the message "Microsoft has encountered a problem is having to shut down" then auto recovery is unable to recover it and what I had previously saved is completely wiped clean. How do I stop this?
